Snorkelling around Fenfushi

Snorkelling is one of the easiest outdoor activities here. Depending on weather, tide and your guesthouse location, you may snorkel close to shore or join a short boat trip to better reef points. Waters can offer reef fish, small sharks, rays, turtles and coral areas, but visibility and current change by season and daily weather. Beginners should use a guide.

Swim with whale sharks in South Ari Atoll

Fenfushi’s biggest marine-life advantage is its position in South Ari Atoll. The South Ari Marine Protected Area is one of the Maldives’ most famous whale shark regions, with sightings reported throughout the year. Manta rays are also seen in South Ari waters, typically peaking during the northeast monsoon, roughly December to April or May, the opposite season from eastern hotspots like Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, unlike the year-round whale sharks.

Whale shark sightings are never guaranteed. These are wild animals, and the experience depends on sea conditions, visibility, operator decisions and how many boats are in the area.

Responsible whale shark rules

Visitors should keep distance, avoid touching, avoid flash photography, follow the guide’s instructions and never jump directly on top of a whale shark.

Vessel rules for the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) have tightened. All vessels used for whale shark watching, snorkelling, diving or fishing in SAMPA must be registered with the Environment Ministry, display an official registration flag, and carry a propeller guard, mandatory from 1 February 2026. Operators must also notify Marine Rangers before entering the zone and share their live location while inside it. Source: Maldives Protected Areas / Environment Ministry.

Before booking, ask whether the operator’s vessel is SAMPA-registered and propeller-guarded. The best operator is not always the cheapest operator.

Scuba diving

A dedicated dive and watersports operator is based on Fenfushi itself, alongside trips run from neighbouring South Ari islands. Ask about dive sites, certification, group size and current before booking.

Sunset fishing

Handline fishing by boat in the late afternoon or evening, well suited to families and non-swimmers. Some guesthouses can arrange to cook the catch.

Sandbank trip

A boat ride to a nearby sandbank for swimming and photos, popular with couples and families wanting the classic Maldives scene.

Dolphin watching

Sightings are never guaranteed, but an evening cruise is enjoyable regardless. A softer alternative to whale shark trips.

Watersports

Limited compared with Maafushi or Dhigurah, but some guesthouses can arrange windsurfing, cycling and guided walks alongside the usual snorkelling and diving.

Guesthouse activities

Bicycles, beach meals, BBQ and local experiences, arranged directly through your property.

Sandbank and picnic island trips

One of the most photogenic things to do near Fenfushi: a boat ride to a nearby sandbank or small island area to swim, take photos and relax in shallow turquoise water. Good for couples, honeymoon-style photos, and families wanting the “postcard Maldives” feeling without booking a private resort. Ask whether water, towels, shade, lunch or snorkelling equipment are included.

On the island

Culture and village life

Fenfushi Friday Mosque

Fenfushi Friday Mosque is the island’s most important cultural attraction and one of the strongest reasons to visit beyond the beach. It’s a historic coral-stone mosque built between 1692 and 1701 CE during the reign of Sultan Mohamed of Dhevvadhu, on the site of an earlier mosque. The compound includes traditional coral-stone features, wells, a bathing tank, a sundial, cemetery markers and boundary walls, and remains an active place of worship.

This is one of the best free things to do in Fenfushi, but it’s not a theme-park attraction. Dress modestly, ask locally before entering, avoid disturbing worshippers, and visit outside prayer times.

Walk around the village and harbour

Fenfushi is small enough to explore slowly on foot. Walk past local homes, small shops, quiet lanes, the harbour and fishing boats, and everyday island life. This is a good way to see how local island tourism differs from resort tourism: no overwater villas, no alcohol bars, just a real community, quiet pace and simple island setting. Dress modestly in the village and ask before photographing people.
