Voavah is the purest private island in the Maldives: a five-acre island in Baa Atoll's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that's only ever booked by one group. Seven bedrooms sleep up to 22 guests, with a three-bedroom beach villa of 1,077 sq m, a two-bedroom water villa, private chefs, the Ocean of Consciousness spa and a dedicated team.

The resort's yacht, Voavah Summer, is part of the island, and Hanifaru Bay's manta season is close. The seaplane from Malé takes about 40 minutes.

Nilaa is the newest luxury opening in our fact base: seven beachfront villas in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, every one with at least two bedrooms, a pool and a butler. The five-bedroom villa reaches 1,150 sq m and sleeps ten; the whole island takes up to 40 guests.

The resort runs its own private jet from Malé to Maavarulu, about an hour, followed by a 15-minute boat ride. An Italian chef cooks in your villa, and the outer reefs bring mantas and whale sharks.

Skip it if you need a kids club. There isn't one by design, though babysitting and children's activities are offered. The five-bedroom villa opens from early December 2026.

Naladhu is the private island you can reach on the night you land. Twenty colonial-style houses with pools and 24-hour butlers sit on a small island in South Malé Atoll, about 35 minutes by speedboat from the airport, so late international flights aren't a problem.

The two-bedroom Beach Pool Residence spreads over 600 sq m and two floors. Surf and kitesurf lessons are on offer, and you can dine at the two neighbouring sister resorts.

Skip it if you want a fully self-contained island. Naladhu shares some dining and facilities with its neighbours.

Ithaafushi Private Island is an exclusive-use island within Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi in South Malé Atoll: a three-bedroom beach villa, a two-bedroom overwater villa and a four-bedroom residence, five pools, its own spa and gym.

The resort's yacht covers the 30 minutes from Malé, so you can check in on the evening you land and still walk to 11 restaurants.

“Private island” in the name isn’t a guarantee

Plenty of resorts carry the words in their name. Niyama Private Islands has 134 villas across two islands; others with “private island” in the title run to 60 or 80 villas. That doesn’t make them worse, it just makes them resorts.

If privacy is the point, look at three numbers instead: how many villas share the island, whether it can be booked as a whole, and how far your villa sits from the next one. Is every resort in the Maldives on a private island?

Almost. The Maldives runs on a one-island, one-resort model: about 179 resorts were operating in 2026, each on its own island. So in a loose sense every resort is a private island resort. What changes is how many other guests you share it with, from one group at Voavah to more than a hundred villas at a large resort.

What is the best private island resort in the Maldives?

For a whole island to yourselves, Four Seasons Private Island at Voavah in Baa Atoll, which takes one group of up to 22. For a couple, Soneva Secret or Kudadoo. For a private island close to Malé, Naladhu, 35 minutes by speedboat.

Can you rent a whole private island in the Maldives?

Yes. Voavah and Coco Privé Kuda Hithi are sold only as whole islands (Coco Privé includes unlimited spa, diving and dining), and Nilaa, The Nautilus and The Halcyon take whole-island bookings. Several resorts also have a private island inside the resort, such as Ithaafushi Private Island at Waldorf Astoria and the Private Island at Cheval Blanc Randheli. How much does a private island in the Maldives cost?

It depends on the island, the dates, the length of stay and how many guests you bring. Exclusive-use islands are priced per night for the whole island, often with a minimum stay over Christmas and New Year. We don't publish rates because they change by date, but we'll quote any island in writing within hours.

How many private islands are there in the Maldives?

The Maldives has about 1,190 coral islands. Around 179 of them were operating as resorts in 2026, each one effectively private. Only a handful are sold as true exclusive-use islands, which is why they book up early.

Can you buy a private island in the Maldives?

Not in the way you'd buy a holiday home. Uninhabited islands are developed as resorts under government leases, which is a large investment project rather than a property purchase. For a private island holiday, the practical route is an exclusive-use booking, which we arrange.

Which private island resort is best for families?

How do you get to a private island resort?

From Velana International Airport in Malé by speedboat (North and South Malé Atoll, any time of day), seaplane (most other atolls, daylight only) or domestic flight and boat (the far south). Nilaa flies guests on its own jet, and Velaa and The Nautilus can be reached by private jet via Maafaru.
