South Ari Atoll local island
A quiet local island in Alif Dhaal Atoll with guesthouses, a swimwear beach, a 17th-century coral-stone mosque, and easy access to South Ari’s whale shark waters, without the resort price tag.
Location
Alif Dhaal Atoll, South Ari, roughly 110.62 km southwest of MalΓ©.
Fenfushi sits in the southern part of Alif Dhaal Atoll, an area most visitors know as South Ari. It is a short hop from Mahibadhoo, Dhigurah and Maamigili, and it shares the same waters as the South Ari Marine Protected Area, one of the best documented whale shark regions in the Maldives.
Two things worth clearing up early: there is a second, unrelated island also called Fenfushi in Raa Atoll, in the north of the country, and the resort sounding Meerufenfushi you might see in searches is a different island entirely, home to Meeru Maldives Resort Island in North MalΓ© Atoll, nowhere near here.

Local island, not a resort
No. Here is what people usually mean when they search this.
Fenfushi is an inhabited local island with guesthouses, small guest hotels, and a handful of local cafes, not a private one-island-one-resort property. Some booking sites list resorts such as Melia Whale Lagoon Maldives under broad “Fenfushi area” search results. That resort is actually on Bodufinolhu Island, a separate island in South Ari Atoll reached by its own transfer, not on Fenfushi itself.
If you want a resort stay, you are looking for a different island. If you want the local island experience, with lower costs and a real community around you, Fenfushi guesthouses are the genuine option.
Beach
What the beach is actually like, and where swimwear is allowed.
Fenfushi’s beach wraps around the edge of the village, calm, sandy, and lagoon-facing rather than a long resort-style stretch. A section of it is set aside as a designated bikini or swimwear beach, where visitors can sunbathe and swim in Western-style swimwear. Outside that area, modest dress is expected, since Fenfushi is an inhabited local island rather than a resort.
It suits quiet swimming, a slow walk along the sand, and photos rather than a beach-club scene, there are no sunbeds, bars or beach service here. Snorkelling directly from the beach is possible when conditions allow, though visibility and current depend on the tide and season, and a guide is worth having if you are new to snorkelling in open water.
Who it suits
On the island
Full detail on the Fenfushi things to do page.
Built between 1692 and 1701 under Sultan Mohamed of Dhevvadhu, on the site of an earlier mosque. It sits on UNESCO’s tentative list for World Heritage status as one of the Maldives’ coral-stone mosques, with its original coral-stone bathing tank, wells, sundial and cemetery still in place. Dress modestly and ask locally before entering; it remains an active place of worship.
Fenfushi has a long tradition of building traditional dhonis by hand near the harbour. Walking the island itself, quiet lanes, a working harbour, modest homes, is one of the simplest and most rewarding things to do here.
In October 2025, the President’s Office confirmed agreements for a new 300-capacity mosque and a boatyard on Fenfushi, alongside a new health centre, waste management centre, police post, running track and volleyball court, and the launch of the Bank of Maldives ATM covered above. South Ari Atoll is one of the Maldives’ most consistent whale shark regions, with Visit Maldives recording year-round sightings in the marine protected area, though as with any wild animal, nothing is ever guaranteed. Manta rays are also seen in the wider South Ari area, typically peaking during the northeast monsoon, roughly December to April or May, the opposite season from eastern hotspots like Hanifaru Bay, so it is worth checking recent sightings if mantas are the priority rather than whale sharks.
Fishing trips, reef and snorkelling boat tours, sandbank excursions and reef or drift diving round out the options, typically arranged through your guesthouse.
Year-round presence in South Ari’s protected waters. Sightings never guaranteed.
Seasonal, peaking roughly December to April/May, unlike the year-round whale sharks.
House reef access plus boat trips to nearby reef points.
Sunset, handline or private fishing, arranged through your guesthouse.
Half-day trips to nearby sandbanks for swimming and photos.
Reef and drift dives can be arranged locally; confirm the dive centre and safety standards.
Accommodation
Full comparison on the Fenfushi guesthouse hub.
Fenfushi’s guesthouse scene is small but genuine and growing. Expect beachfront or garden settings, family-run hospitality, and help arranging transfers and excursions rather than big resort-style facilities. Properties currently listed across major travel platforms include Whale Shark Boutique, White Tern Maldives, Fushi Beach Guesthouse, Oasis Village Fenfushi, Bene Beach Resort, and Vevu Villa.
When comparing options, check distance to the tourist beach area, meal plan, whether the property helps arrange your speedboat transfer, excursion availability, room and family setup, direct beach access, and recent guest reviews.
