Beach pool villa or overwater pool villa?

Search for a Maldives resort with a private pool and you will see both kinds mixed together. They are different stays.

A beach pool villa sits on the sand, usually behind a screen of palms or a garden wall, with the pool between the bedroom and the beach. You get shade, more space for the money, and a pool that stays cool under the trees. It is the easier choice with small children, because there is no open water off the deck.

An overwater pool villa puts the pool on a deck above the lagoon, with a ladder down to the sea. The view is the classic one, the breeze is better, and you can swim in the pool and the lagoon within a minute. You trade some privacy, since neighbours share the jetty, and usually some space.

Milaidhoo is a Maldivian-owned island of 50 villas, and every one has a private pool. The Beach Pool Villas are 290 sq m, with a curved pool, a thatched sala and the sand right at the edge of the deck. A 24-hour island host looks after each villa.

Because children under eight are not accepted, the island stays quiet, and it is close to Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays gather in numbers from roughly June to November.

Private pool villas on a smaller budget

Coco Bodu Hithi

Every one of its 98 villas has a pool, the Beach Villa with Pool is 188 sq m, and it is 35 minutes by speedboat from the airport. Breakfast, half board, full board and all-inclusive plans are all available.

Angsana Velavaru

Beachfront Infinity Pool Villas from 104 sq m in Dhaalu Atoll, with an all-inclusive option and a kids club for ages four to eleven. A 40-minute seaplane flight.

Dhigali

Beach Villas with Pool of 121 sq m on a premium all-inclusive plan in Raa Atoll, with the PLAY kids club. Being rebranded as Niva Dhigali.

What to check before you book a pool villa

Plunge pool or swimming pool?Many pools are four to six metres long, perfect for cooling off but not for lengths. If you swim, ask for the length.
Shade.A pool in full sun at midday is hot. Beach villas under palms stay cooler; some have a shaded sala beside the water.
Which way it faces.Sunset pools face west and usually cost more. Sunrise pools are in shade by mid-afternoon.
Privacy walls.Most beach pool villas are screened from the path behind, but check the beach side: on some islands it is open to passers-by.
Distance to the main facilities.The most private villas are often a buggy ride from restaurants. Lovely for couples, harder with toddlers.
The exact category name.“Beach Villa” and “Beach Villa with Pool” can sit side by side on the same rate sheet. We always book by the full name.

Private pool villas for families

A villa pool is wonderful with children, as long as you plan for it. Ask the resort for a pool fence or alarm when you book, check the depth (some are deeper than a hotel pool), and look for a villa with a separate children’s room so naps do not mean sitting in the dark.

Is a beach pool villa or an overwater pool villa better?

A beach pool villa gives you shade, sand under your feet and more space for the money, and it is safer for small children. An overwater pool villa gives you the lagoon from your deck and the classic Maldives view. Many couples split their stay between the two.

Are private pools in Maldives villas heated?

Usually not, and in the tropics they rarely need to be: villa pools sit at a warm temperature most of the year. A few resorts, such as The Nautilus, have temperature-controlled pools. If it matters, ask us to confirm for the villa you are looking at.

Are private pool villas safe for children?

Beach pool villas are the easier choice with young children, because there is no open water off the deck. Ask for a fenced pool or a pool alarm, check the depth, and look at family pool villas with a separate children’s room, such as Niyama, Halcyon or Jumeirah Olhahali.

Can I get a private pool villa near Malé airport?

Yes. Velassaru is 25 minutes by speedboat, Huvafen Fushi about 30, Coco Bodu Hithi 35 and Jumeirah Olhahali 15 minutes by seaplane. The Ritz-Carlton and Patina at Fari Islands are around 45 minutes by speedboat.

Do all-inclusive resorts in the Maldives have pool villas?

Several do. Coco Bodu Hithi, Angsana Velavaru and Dhigali offer all-inclusive plans with pool villa categories, and Kudadoo is fully inclusive with a pool in every residence.

How big is a typical private pool villa in the Maldives?

At luxury resorts, beach pool villas usually range from about 110 to 300 sq m including the garden and pool deck. The largest one-bedroom beach pool villas, at JOALI BEING, pass 500 sq m.
