Snorkelling excursion boat in South MalΓ© Atoll off Maafushi island, Maldives, with turquoise water
Quick Answer

Maafushi has more activity options than almost any other local island in the Maldives. On the water: jet skis, parasailing, kayaks, banana boats, paddleboards, and glass-bottom boats from the beach. By excursion boat: sandbank trips, nurse shark and shipwreck snorkelling, dolphin cruises, whale shark days, resort day trips, night fishing, and sport fishing. On the island: bikini beach, the Maafushi sign at the pier, island walking, spas, bioluminescent plankton at night, and the floating bar offshore. Book excursions directly with operators or through your guesthouse. Direct bookings save around USD 30 versus booking platforms. Most excursions need booking one day ahead. Whale shark trips in particular should be booked as early as possible.

Water sports at Maafushi

Maafushi has one of the widest water sports menus of any local island in the Maldives. Operators run from the public beach adjacent to the bikini beach (the Water Sports Beach) from approximately 8 am to 5 pm daily, weather permitting. No advance booking is usually needed for beach-based water sports. Walk up, choose your activity, and go.

Before you pay: Ask the operator how many minutes are included in the price, whether a life jacket is provided, and what happens if weather stops the activity. Short jet ski and parasailing sessions can feel expensive for the time involved if you do not confirm the duration upfront.

Snorkelling excursions from Maafushi

Shared snorkelling excursions are the main reason most travellers choose Maafushi as a base. Operator competition keeps shared trip prices lower here than anywhere nearby, and daily departures make planning flexible. Trips depart from the harbour, usually between 8:00 and 9:30 am.

What to book and what to pay

Night fishing2–3 hrsUSD 30–50 ppHandline fishing from a small boat after dark. Beginner-friendly. Some operators cook your catch afterwards.
Book direct, save ~USD 30: Booking directly with operators at the harbour or through your guesthouse consistently costs around USD 30 less than booking the same trip through Viator or GetYourGuide. Platform fees, intermediary charges, and currency conversion account for the difference. The operator is the same person you meet at the boat. Cut out the middleman.

Before you book a snorkelling excursion

A few questions to ask any operator before paying:

QuestionWhy it matters
How many snorkelling stops are included?Half-day trips often have 2; full-day can have 3 to 4. More stops means more marine life variety.
Is snorkel gear included?Usually yes, but quality varies. Bringing your own mask gives a better seal and visibility.
Are life jackets available?Should always be yes. Essential for weaker swimmers.
How many guests are on the boat?Smaller boats give a better experience. Ask if there is a maximum.
Is lunch included?Varies by trip. Full-day tours usually include a BBQ sandbank lunch; half-days often do not.
Are underwater photos or video available? Many operators offer GoPro footage for an additional USD 10 to 20. Ask before departure.
What happens in bad weather? Most operators reschedule rather than refund. Confirm the policy before you pay, especially in the southwest monsoon (May to October).
Are children allowed? Most shared trips welcome children; confirm age or swimming ability requirements beforehand.

The Keyodhoo shipwreck: what makes it special

The Keyodhoo shipwreck is one of the few shipwrecks in the Maldives that can be explored by snorkelling without scuba diving. Located in Vaavu Atoll (technically not South MalΓ© Atoll, so this is a longer trip than the local reef excursions), it sits at a depth where the wreck structure is visible from the surface and accessible to confident swimmers with a mask and snorkel. The wreck is usually the highlight of the combined full-day tour (nurse sharks, shipwreck, dolphin, BBQ sandbank) and is what distinguishes that trip from the standard half-day snorkel.

Whale shark honest warning

Whale shark trips from Maafushi are possible but the South Ari Marine Protected Area is approximately three hours by speedboat away, making it a 10 to 11 hour day with six hours of travel at USD 90 to 130 per person. If whale sharks are your main priority, Dhigurah in South Ari Atoll puts you 30 minutes from the MPA at significantly lower cost. Maafushi works for a one-off whale shark day if you are here for other reasons.

Scuba diving from Maafushi

Multiple dive centres operate on Maafushi, including a 5-Star PADI Gold Palm Centre. South MalΓ© Atoll has good diving year-round, with regular sightings of turtles, reef sharks, eagle rays, and nurse sharks depending on site and season.

  • 10-tank package: USD 430 (USD 43/dive)
  • NITROX: USD 5 extra per dive
  • Morning 2 dives: 08:30–12:30
  • Afternoon 1 dive: 14:30–16:30

  • Advanced Open Water: available
  • PADI e-Learning: complete theory online before arriving (saves classroom time)
  • Afternoon sessions include beginners and certified divers
  • Credit/debit card: 3% surcharge applies

For serious divers who want a dive-focused holiday, Vaavu Atoll (reachable via Fulidhoo) offers stronger channel diving with nurse sharks, mantas, and hammerheads. Maafushi is a good base for casual divers and those completing a course alongside other holiday activities.

No-fly time after diving: Do not fly within 18 to 24 hours of your last dive (12 hours minimum for a single no-decompression dive; 18 hours after multiple dives or repetitive diving days). If your departure flight is the day after a full dive day, plan your last dive to allow adequate surface time. Discuss your flight schedule with your dive centre before booking dive days.

Wildlife ethics: what to do and what to avoid

Maafushi's excursion boats visit nurse sharks, turtles, stingrays, dolphins, whale sharks, and coral reef ecosystems. Some tours marketed to tourists involve practices that are harmful to marine life. Here is how to tell the difference.

SpeciesWhat to doWhat to avoidHonest note
Nurse sharksObserve from 2+ metres; stay calm and slowTouch, chase, or swim directly above themNurse sharks rest on sand and will move away if stressed. Some tours let you swim alongside at a respectful distance. This is fine.
StingraysObserve from the boat or at a respectful distance if snorkellingBook any tour that frames stingrays as an "attraction to touch" or "stand among"The Fulidhoo stingray stop on many Maafushi day trips involves operators feeding stingrays dead fish to draw them close for tourists. This is harmful. A good operator will not do this. Ask before booking.
DolphinsWatch from the boat; appreciate the natural behaviourEnter the water to swim with wild dolphinsWild dolphins are not trained to interact with humans. Entering the water disrupts feeding, resting, and calf care. Dolphin cruise = boat only.
Whale sharksSnorkel alongside at 3+ metre distance; no flash photographyTouch, ride, block their path, or approach head-onWhale sharks are protected under Maldivian law. Responsible operators brief you before entering the water. If yours does not, that is a red flag.
TurtlesWatch quietly; allow unobstructed path to the surfaceTouch, ride, or block their surfacing routeTurtles must surface to breathe. Blocking this causes stress and can cause drowning. Give them clear space above.
CoralMaintain buoyancy; use reef-safe sunscreen (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide)Stand on, touch, kick, or kick up sediment near coralEven a single contact kills coral polyps. Dead-looking grey coral is often bleached, not dead, and can recover if left undisturbed.
Stingray feeding tours: Some Maafushi full-day excursions include a stop at Fulidhoo where operators feed dead fish to stingrays to draw them close to tourists for photos. This conditions wild stingrays to associate humans with food, distorts their natural behaviour, and is considered harmful by marine conservation organisations. If a tour description says "stand among stingrays" or "rays come right up to you," ask the operator how they achieve this. If the answer involves feeding, choose a different trip or ask to skip that stop.

Free things to do on Maafushi

The Maafushi sign at the pier

The large white Maafushi sign at the harbour is visible from the arriving speedboat and is the first thing most visitors photograph. It features silhouettes of whale sharks and manta rays and is open 24 hours. Early morning (before 8 am) and late evening give the best photos without crowds. It is a 2-minute walk from the bikini beach.

Island walk

A full circuit of Maafushi takes around 30 minutes at a relaxed pace. Start at the pier and walk south to pass the mosque, local school, and the Maafushi prison (visible from the road, not open to visitors). Continue along the eastern shore past the local beach (the No Bikini Beach, where swimwear is not permitted), then loop back north to the bikini beach and tourist strip. The contrast between the resort-like north end and the quieter residential south is part of what makes the island interesting.

Sunrise and stargazing

Sunrise on Maafushi is typically around 5:45 to 6:15 am depending on the month. The local beach on the eastern side gives the clearest sunrise view. At night, the minimal light pollution at the northern bikini beach makes it a decent stargazing spot. On clear nights the Milky Way is visible, and bioluminescent plankton can occasionally be spotted in the wave wash.

Local cafΓ© and mas huni breakfast

Mas huni is shredded tuna mixed with fresh coconut, onion, and chilli. It is the traditional Maldivian breakfast dish and costs USD 3 to 6 at local cafΓ©s. Pair it with a sweet black tea or fresh coconut for the most authentic Maafushi morning. Several local cafΓ©s on the tourist strip serve it, usually from 7 am onwards.

Day trips to Gulhi and Guraidhoo

Two nearby local islands make easy day trips or overnight add-ons from Maafushi. Gulhi (~6 km) is the better choice for beach quality: its bikini beach has cleaner, clearer water than Maafushi's and is much less crowded. Guraidhoo (~12 km) has a quieter, more authentically local-village feel. Both are connected by local ferry (route 309 via Gulhi and Guraidhoo departs Maafushi daily except Fridays). Check the schedule with your guesthouse the night before; the ferry does not run on Fridays.

Drone warning: Flying a drone in the Maldives requires prior permission from the Civil Aviation Authority and local authorities. Do not fly a drone over Maafushi, the harbour, or any inhabited island without confirmed permits. Fines apply. Resort areas have their own drone policies. Check before you travel.

Spa and wellness

Aquzz Spa and the spa at Kaani Grand Seaview are the two main spa options on Maafushi. Both offer massage treatments ranging from head massages to full-body sessions. Prices typically run USD 40 to 80 per hour. A spa session in the afternoon (after a morning excursion and before the floating bar at sunset) is the natural rhythm of a well-structured Maafushi day.

Evening and night activities

The floating bar

The floating bar is the standard Maafushi solution to the island's alcohol prohibition. A safari boat is moored just offshore, accessible by a free short tender ride from the beach. The atmosphere is relaxed with soft music and ocean views. Beer costs USD 6 per bottle (0.33L, Camel brand from Vietnam as of 2025 to 2026). Cocktails and other drinks are available at resort-adjacent prices.

A few practical notes: boarding and disembarking the tender can be challenging in rough seas, and reviews note this becomes more challenging after several drinks. The bar is at its best in calm conditions around sunset. Exact operating hours and availability can change seasonally; confirm with your guesthouse the day before.

Sunset dolphin cruise

The 1.5 to 2 hour sunset dolphin cruise departs in the late afternoon and returns after dark. Spinner and bottlenose dolphins are commonly sighted in the waters around Maafushi, particularly at dusk when they surface to feed. The trip costs USD 25 to 45 per person shared. Sightings are common but cannot be guaranteed. Do not enter the water if dolphins appear alongside the boat.

Night fishing

Night fishing departs around 7 to 9 pm and involves handline fishing from a small boat in the lagoon. No experience is needed. Some operators cook your catch on the boat or back at the guesthouse. It is one of the most accessible evening activities at Maafushi and costs USD 30 to 50 per person.

Bioluminescent plankton

Bioluminescence is possible at Maafushi. The bay waters contain phytoplankton that glow blue-white when disturbed. The best conditions are dark nights (new moon phase), calm water, and the right plankton density. Sightings are most commonly reported between June and December, typically between 8:00 pm and midnight. Walk to the local beach on the eastern side after dark and look at the wave wash and any disturbance in the water. Maafushi Dive & Water Sports also offers boat tours to bioluminescence-rich areas when conditions allow. Bioluminescence is never guaranteed; ask your guesthouse or operator about recent sightings before committing to a dedicated trip.

Night fishing is one of the most accessible evening activities at Maafushi, at USD 30 to 50 per person with some operators cooking your catch

Sport fishing and fishing charters

Beyond the short handline night fishing trips, Maafushi is a strong base for serious sport fishing. Private and shared charters target GT (Giant Trevally), yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado (mahi-mahi), and sailfish in the deeper waters of South MalΓ© Atoll. Charter prices vary significantly by boat, duration, crew, and target species.

Maafushi for couples and honeymooners

Maafushi works well for couples who want an active, affordable Maldives trip with plenty of excursion options and a lively base. Private sandbank trips, sunset dolphin cruises, spa afternoons, and resort day passes all work well for two.

For honeymooners: Maafushi suits the excursion portion of a trip rather than the romantic finish. The standard combination is a few nights in Maafushi for activities, then a private resort for overwater villas, alcohol, and privacy. HolidayVibe arranges these split stays.

FAQs: things to do in Maafushi

What are the best things to do in Maafushi?

The most popular activities are: full-day snorkelling excursions (nurse sharks, Keyodhoo shipwreck, dolphin watching, BBQ sandbank lunch), sunset dolphin cruise, water sports on the beach (parasailing, jet ski, kayak), the floating bar at sunset, and night fishing. For non-swimmers: glass-bottom boat, dolphin cruise, resort day trip, and the sandbank picnic. Free activities include the island walk, the Maafushi sign at the pier, sunrise watching, and stargazing from the bikini beach.

How much do activities cost in Maafushi?

Water sports start from around USD 10 per hour for kayaking and go up to USD 80 for flyboarding. Shared snorkelling excursions cost USD 35 to 80 depending on duration. The popular full-day nurse shark and shipwreck trip (including BBQ lunch) is around USD 65 per person. Whale shark day trips cost USD 90 to 130. A single scuba dive costs USD 50 for certified divers. The floating bar beer is USD 6 per bottle. Night fishing is USD 30 to 50. Always book direct or through your guesthouse, not through platform bookings (Viator, GetYourGuide) cost around USD 30 more for the same trip.

Can non-swimmers do activities in Maafushi?

Yes, many of the best Maafushi activities do not require swimming ability. Glass-bottom boat tours, dolphin cruises, night fishing, the floating bar, resort day trips, sandbank picnics, parasailing, kayaking, and all on-island activities are suitable for non-swimmers. Snorkelling excursions are possible with a life jacket for light swimmers, but the shipwreck and whale shark tours require confident open-water swimming ability.

What is the Keyodhoo shipwreck?

The Keyodhoo shipwreck is a sunken vessel located near Keyodhoo island in Vaavu Atoll. It is one of the few shipwrecks in the Maldives that can be explored by snorkelling without scuba diving. The wreck structure is accessible from the surface at a shallow enough depth for a mask and snorkel. It is typically included in the popular full-day tour combining nurse sharks, shipwreck, dolphin watching, and a BBQ sandbank lunch, priced at around USD 65 per person from Maafushi.

Is the Maafushi floating bar free?

The tender boat to reach the floating bar is free. Once on board, drinks are priced at bar rates: beer costs USD 6 per 0.33L bottle (Camel brand from Vietnam as of 2025 to 2026). Cocktails and other drinks are available. The bar is moored just offshore and access is from the beach, usually in the late afternoon and evening. Boarding can be challenging in rough sea conditions.

Can you see bioluminescence at Maafushi?

Yes, bioluminescent plankton are possible at Maafushi, most commonly between June and December on dark nights between 8 pm and midnight. Walk to the local (eastern) beach after dark and look at the wave wash. Maafushi Dive and Water Sports also organises boat tours to bioluminescence-rich areas when conditions allow. Sightings are never guaranteed; ask your guesthouse or operators about recent sightings the night before you plan to go.

Should I book Maafushi excursions in advance?

Book the day before at minimum for any shared snorkelling or full-day excursion. Most trips require a minimum of 4 to 6 passengers to depart, and operators confirm or cancel the evening before based on numbers. For whale shark trips and resort day passes, book 2 to 3 days ahead. Water sports at the beach are walk-up. Book directly with operators or through your guesthouse. Not Viator or GetYourGuide, where the same trip costs around USD 30 more.

Is there a stingray experience at Maafushi?

Some Maafushi full-day excursions include a stop at Fulidhoo where operators have historically fed dead fish to stingrays to draw them close to tourists. This is considered harmful to the stingrays and their natural behaviour. A responsible operator will not do this. If a tour is marketed with language like "rays swim right up to you" or "stand among stingrays," ask the operator how this is achieved. Choose a different trip or ask to skip that stop if feeding is involved.

What time do activities start in Maafushi?

Most full-day excursion boats depart between 8:00 and 9:30 am from the harbour. Water sports at the beach typically open around 8 am. Afternoon dive sessions start at 14:30. Sunset activities (dolphin cruise, floating bar) depart around 4:30 to 5:00 pm. Night fishing usually departs around 7:30 to 8:00 pm. Book the evening before and confirm your meeting point with the operator.

What is the best month to visit Maafushi for activities?

December to April (northeast monsoon) gives the best conditions: calm seas, excellent water visibility, and reliable daily excursion departures. This is also peak season, so prices are higher and the island is busier. May to October (southwest monsoon) has more wind and rain; excursions still run on most days but occasional cancellations happen. Water sports are more weather-dependent. Bioluminescence is more commonly seen June to December. Whale shark sightings in South Ari Atoll peak August to November.
