Laamu Gan Island Guide: The Largest Island in the Maldives

Three historic villages, Buddhist ruins older than the conversion to Islam, a gold-tinted freshwater lake, 7.8 km of roads through coconut groves, and the only local island in the Maldives you reach by driving from the domestic airport. This is what Laamu Gan is actually like.

The causeway chain linking Gan, Maandhoo, Kadhdhoo and Fonadhoo stretches 18 km — the longest unbroken stretch of land in the Maldives.

What Is Laamu Gan?

Laamu Gan is not the typical Maldivian local island. Most are small enough to cross in ten minutes on foot. Gan is 7.8 km long and 3.4 km wide, with three historically separate villages, paved roads running through thick palm forest, agricultural land growing coconut, taro and tropical fruit, and a regional hospital serving the entire South Central Province. It functions more like a small town than the compact island villages most travellers picture when they think of local Maldives.

Its geography is also unique. Gan connects by causeway to the uninhabited island of Maandhoo to the south, which then links to Kadhdhoo (where the domestic airport sits), which in turn connects to Fonadhoo, the administrative capital of Laamu Atoll. That 18 km chain of causeways is the longest continuous stretch of dry land in the country. It is why Laamu Gan is the only local island in the Maldives where you can step off a domestic flight, get into a car, and drive to your guesthouse without boarding a single boat.

Do not confuse: There are three islands named Gan in the Maldives — in Laamu Atoll, in Addu Atoll (far south), and in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. This guide covers L. Gan in Laamu Atoll only. All three share the same Sanskrit root word “grama,” meaning village.

Laamu Gan Map: The Three Villages

Unlike almost every other Maldivian island, Laamu Gan has three distinct villages that were historically separate communities, connected only by boat until the road was built. Today the link road runs through dense palm forest between them, and bicycles or motorcycles are the standard way to move around.

🏠 Thundi (north)

The northernmost ward, home to Thundi Harbour and closest to Baywatch Beach. Most guesthouses are in or near this area.

🏠 Mathimaradhu (centre)

The central ward. Home to Gan Regional Hospital, the Maldives National University campus, and the island’s main commercial stretch.

🏠 Mukurimagu (south)

The southernmost ward, location of the Gamu Haiytheli stupa and Kuruhinna ruins — the most significant Buddhist heritage sites on the island.

Why Laamu Gan Is Different from Other Local Islands

If you have visited Maafushi, Dhigurah, or Fulidhoo, Laamu Gan will feel immediately different. The scale alone changes the experience: you can spend an entire afternoon cycling through palm groves and never reach the far end of the island. The road between the three wards runs through genuinely agricultural land — coconut palms, taro plots, breadfruit trees — not just a narrow strip between the beach and the mosque. There is a regional university campus. There is a hospital that serves the wider province. There is a tuna-canning factory on the adjacent island of Maandhoo you can visit on an excursion.

The trade-off is that Gan lacks the concentrated beach-and-reef setup of smaller islands where the house reef is five minutes from your pillow. The snorkelling and diving here require a short boat ride to the reef, and the beaches are large but unmanaged outside the guesthouse areas. Gan rewards travellers who want to actually explore rather than just lie on a beach.

Laamu Gan’s Buddhist Ruins

Laamu Atoll was one of the main centres of Buddhist civilisation in the Maldives before the formal conversion to Islam in 1153 AD. Gan holds two of the most significant pre-Islamic sites in the country.

Gamu Haiytheli (Haiytheli stupa), Mukurimagu

Located on Mudhin Hinna in the southern Mukurimagu ward, the Gamu Haiytheli is a Buddhist stupa measuring 91.5 m in circumference and 7.3 m in height, according to Wikipedia and Bell’s own records. Local tradition holds it was the last Buddhist temple built in the Maldives. The name itself carries a story: oral tradition says “haiytheli” refers to seven (hai) saucer-like chatras (theli) that once crowned the stupa top. British archaeologist H.C.P. Bell studied the site in 1922, becoming the first person to document evidence of a Buddhist civilisation in the Maldives. His excavations also revealed a surrounding priory (pirivena), monastery (vihara), and image house (watadage). After conversion, the carved stones were dismantled and recycled by islanders — some to build Gan’s first mosque, which still stands near the site.

Verify before you go: The ruins have suffered significant vandalism over the decades. What remains today is largely mounds and scattered coral rubble rather than intact structures. They are still historically significant and worth visiting, but go with realistic expectations — not a restored temple complex.

Kuruhinna ruins (Munbaru)

In the Kuruhinna area of Mukurimagu ward lie the Munbaru ruins — the foundations and remnants of a monastic complex that Bell excavated in 1923 and documented in his 1940 monograph as among the best-preserved Buddhist sites in the archipelago at the time. Vandalism since then has reduced them to fragments, but the site’s archaeological importance remains substantial.

Laamu Atoll’s historical record is also documented by the Isdhoo Loamaafaanu, copper plates from nearby Isdhoo island recording the Islamisation of the islands under Sultan Gadanaadheethiya, dated to 1194 AD. These are some of the oldest surviving written records in the Maldives.

Paree Fengandu (Bodu Fengandu): Laamu Gan’s Freshwater Lake

On the eastern side of Gan, between the Kuda Hinna and Bodu Hinna areas, lies one of the most unusual natural features on any Maldivian island. Paree Fengandu — also known as Bodu Fengandu or sometimes Naraka Fengandu — is a large brackish lake with a distinctly gold-coloured tint. The Maldives protected areas registry lists it as a site of strong historical and folklore importance, not just a scenic feature.

Most Maldivian islands have no standing fresh or brackish water at all. Gan’s size and soil composition make this possible, and the lake sits in a dense belt of vegetation on the less-visited eastern shore. Cycling there early in the morning, before the heat builds, is one of the more memorable things you can do on a Laamu Gan itinerary. The “Paree Fengandu” keyword in search data suggests travellers are specifically looking for this — it is a genuine attraction, not just a footnote.

Beaches on Laamu Gan

Baywatch Beach (the bikini beach)

Baywatch Beach is the designated tourist beach where swimwear is permitted. It sits on the northern part of the island near Thundi ward, within walking distance (4–10 minutes on foot) of most guesthouses. The beach is natural and untouched rather than groomed — no sun lounger rows, no beach clubs. The snorkelling on the adjacent shallow reef is accessible but conditions vary. Bring your own mat or towel if you want to stretch out.

Long beaches and the western shore

Gan has one of the longest natural beach stretches in the Maldives along its western and northern shores. Much of it is undeveloped. Be aware that outside the guesthouse beach areas and the main tourist beach, litter can be present — this is a real town, not a resort. The best stretches are near Thundi and accessed through the guesthouse private beach areas.

Diving and Snorkelling from Laamu Gan

Laamu Atoll has one of the least-pressured reef systems in the Maldives. With only one dive operation based on the island (operating from the boutique diving property), the sites around Gan see a fraction of the diver traffic you find in Ari Atoll or North Malé Atoll. The atoll has 20+ documented dive sites: channels (kandu), coral pinnacles (thila), and drop-offs. Water temperature stays at 27–29°C year-round.

Species commonly sighted include grey reef sharks, nurse sharks, whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays, manta rays, barracuda, tuna, Napoleon wrasse, and abundant reef fish and turtles on the inner reefs. Sightings depend on conditions and are never guaranteed. Visibility is typically 20–30 m, with the best conditions from December through April.

Because the dive operation is land-based on Gan, the boat ride to most sites is short. Beginners and non-divers find the inner reefs productive for snorkelling; the channels are better suited to certified divers comfortable with current.

Education and Civic Infrastructure

Gan’s status as a regional hub goes beyond tourism. The island hosts a campus of the Maldives National University and a Villa College campus — the main higher-education providers in the country outside Malé. Gan Regional Hospital is the highest-referral healthcare centre for the South Central Province. A Bank of Maldives branch operates on the island. These facilities are not tourist attractions, but they explain the island’s relatively large population and the sense of civic scale you do not find on smaller guesthouse islands.

ATM and cash: Gan has a Bank of Maldives branch. Confirm its ATM status when you book — ATM availability on outer islands can change. Carry US dollars and Maldivian rufiyaa as backup. Most guesthouses and local cafes accept USD, but change may be in MVR.

January through March is the peak. The wet season (May through November) brings more afternoon showers and marginally lower underwater visibility, but also fewer visitors and sometimes lower guesthouse rates. Water temperature stays at 27–29°C regardless of season. Manta ray sightings in the atoll are possible throughout the year, with peak activity typically from November to April.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laamu Gan

How big is Laamu Gan?

Laamu Gan is 7.8 km long and 3.4 km wide, making it the largest and longest inhabited island in the Maldives. Together with the adjacent island of Maandhoo, the two form the largest single landmass in the country. Do not confuse it with the other islands named Gan in Addu Atoll or Gaafu Alifu Atoll, which are different and smaller.

How do I get to Laamu Gan from Malé?

Take a domestic flight from Velana International Airport (MLE) to Kadhdhoo Airport (KDO) in Laamu Atoll — around 40–45 minutes. From Kadhdhoo, Gan is a 10–20-minute drive across the causeway road. No boat is required. Most guesthouses can arrange vehicle pickup from the airport. A public ferry from Malé also operates but takes 12–14 hours overnight. Always confirm transfer arrangements before travelling.

Which airport serves Laamu Gan?

Kadhdhoo Airport (IATA: KDO), located on the island of Kadhdhoo in Laamu Atoll, is the domestic airport serving the area. It is directly connected to Gan via a causeway road, making the land transfer to Gan around 10–20 minutes. Domestic flights from Malé take approximately 40–45 minutes.

Is Laamu Gan the same as Gan in Addu?

No. They are entirely different islands that happen to share the same name (derived from the Sanskrit “grama,” meaning village). Laamu Gan (L. Gan) is in Laamu Atoll, approximately 249 km south of Malé, and is the largest inhabited island in the Maldives. Gan in Addu Atoll is much further south, in a different atoll, with a different history (it served as an RAF base). They are not near each other and serve completely different destinations.

What is Paree Fengandu in Laamu Gan?

Paree Fengandu (also called Bodu Fengandu or Naraka Fengandu) is a large brackish lake on the eastern side of Gan with distinctly gold-coloured water. It is listed by the Maldives protected areas registry as a site of historical and folklore significance. The lake is unusual because almost no other Maldivian island has standing brackish or freshwater. Cycling there in the early morning is one of the better quieter activities on a Gan itinerary.

Are there hotels in Laamu Gan?

Gan has guesthouses rather than large hotels. The range goes from small family-run rooms to a boutique dive property with a pool, spa, and rooftop bar. For a five-star overwater resort experience, Laamu Atoll has a luxury property on a separate island accessible from Kadhdhoo Airport. HolidayVibe can arrange a combined itinerary mixing a guesthouse stay on Gan with a resort segment if you want both.

Where is the bikini beach on Laamu Gan?

Baywatch Beach, near Thundi ward in the northern part of the island, is the designated tourist beach where swimwear is permitted. It is within a 4–10-minute walk of most guesthouses. Outside this designated beach area, modest dress (covering shoulders and knees) is expected throughout the village.

Is Laamu Gan good for diving?

Yes, Laamu Atoll as a whole is one of the least-dived reef systems in the Maldives, which means the sites around Gan see very little pressure. The atoll has 20+ documented dive sites including channels with shark and ray encounters and inner reefs better suited to beginners and snorkellers. There is a resident dive centre on the island offering courses, fun dives, and guided trips. Best visibility is December through April; the reef is diveable year-round. See the full Laamu diving guide.

Can you drink alcohol on Laamu Gan?

Alcohol is available at the one licensed boutique dive property on the island. It is not available at local cafes, smaller guesthouses, or shops. If alcohol availability matters to you, confirm this with your chosen accommodation before booking.

How far is Laamu Atoll from Malé?

Gan island itself is approximately 249 km from Malé as a direct distance. The domestic flight to Kadhdhoo Airport takes around 40–45 minutes. Search results sometimes cite 265 km, which likely refers to the atoll centre rather than the island. The flight time is the most practical reference for planning.
