Gan is the largest inhabited island in the Maldives, 7.8 km long, with three historic wards (Thundi, Mathimaradhu, Mukurimagu) connected by a paved road that continues by causeway to Maandhoo, Kadhdhoo and Fonadhoo. It is the only local island in the Maldives where you arrive by car from the domestic airport rather than by speedboat. That is the practical difference Gan offers: you land at Kadhdhoo Airport and drive to your guesthouse in 10–20 minutes.
For surfers, the draw is the Yin Yang break on the eastern side of the atoll, a right-hander accessible by short boat trip from Gan guesthouses. For divers, Laamu Atoll has 20+ documented sites including Fushi Kandu (Marine Protected Area), Hithadhoo Corner (Laamu Manta Point with five cleaning stations), and Bella Thila for turtles. Water temp is 27–30°C year-round.
