01Why Gili
Gili Lankanfushi has been a name on Maldives wish lists for years, and the reason is simple. It feels like a castaway island, with weathered timber, thatch and sand paths, yet you can reach it in 20 minutes from the airport, at any time of day.
Every villa stands over the water, strung along jetties in a clear lagoon. The island is small and green, with an organic garden that supplies the kitchens, and the resort asks you to leave your shoes at the door on arrival. A personal butler, your Mr or Ms Friday, takes care of the rest.
It is one of the strongest choices in North Malé Atoll if you want overwater space without a seaplane. Nearby alternatives include Huvafen Fushi and Four Seasons Kuda Huraa.

Gili Lankanfushi is on Lankanfushi island in North Malé Atoll, about 20 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport. That short, any-time transfer is a big part of its appeal: you can land in the evening and be on your deck for a late dinner.
Yes. All 45 villas and residences stand over the lagoon. The island itself holds the restaurants, spa, dive centre, organic garden and tennis court, so you live over the water and walk barefoot onto the island for everything else.
The entry Villa Suite is 210 sq m, which is large for a standard overwater villa in the Maldives. Residences are 250 sq m, the two-bedroom Family Villa is 350 sq m, and The Private Reserve covers well over 1,000 sq m: the fact sheet says 1,400 sq m and some partners list 1,700.
It is one of the largest overwater villas in the world, standing alone in the lagoon about 500 m from the island and 300 m from the nearest villa, reached only by boat. It has two master suites and a guest room, a natural coral pool with a water slide from the top deck, its own spa with sauna and steam, a gym and resident butlers.
Crusoe Residences stand on their own in the lagoon, away from the jetties, so you reach the island by boat or by rowing yourself across. They have the 250 sq m Residence layout with a kitchenette, mini wine cellar and rooftop terrace, and suit couples who want to feel properly cut off.
It works well for families with older children who swim confidently. There is no traditional kids club, but the Mr Friday team runs entertainment programmes for children, and the two-bedroom Family Villa has its own gym, steam room and a rooftop jacuzzi.
It is the idea behind the resort: kick off your shoes on arrival and slow down. Sand paths, timber jetties and a personal butler, known as your Mr or Ms Friday, mean you rarely need shoes or a schedule for the whole stay.
The resort has its own PADI dive centre, and well-known North Malé sites, including Manta Point, are within roughly 10 minutes by boat. Snorkelling with the marine biologist is a good way to see the coral restoration work around the island.
