Plunge pool, infinity pool or jacuzzi: what you are actually getting

“Water villa with pool” covers a lot of ground. Before you compare prices, it helps to know which of these you are looking at.

Plunge pool: The most common. Usually four to seven metres long, built into the deck, deep enough to sink into but not to swim lengths. Baros publishes its Water Pool Villa pool at 6.6 m by 3.6 m.
Infinity pool: One edge appears to spill into the lagoon. Larger villas often have long infinity pools, like the 12.5 m pools at Cheval Blanc or the 44 sq m pools at Kudadoo.
Glass-sided pool: A clear wall on the lagoon side, so the pool and the sea seem to join. Kandolhu’s Ocean Pool Villas are a good example.
Pool with slide: A slide from the deck or roof into the lagoon. Siyam World offers one at 81 sq m; at Soneva Jani the slide comes with a 437 sq m villa.
Hot tub or jacuzzi: Not the same thing. Some water villas are sold “with jacuzzi” or “with hot tub”: lovely for a soak, too small to swim. Check the category name.

Resorts where every overwater villa has a pool

At these resorts you do not need to hunt for the pool category: every water villa comes with one. That makes comparing easier, and means the entry water villa is already a pool villa.

The Westin Miriandhoo added pools to all its beach and overwater villas in 2023. At other resorts, such as Dhigali, Velassaru and Six Senses Laamu, only some water villa categories have pools, so we always book by the full category name.

Booking tips for an overwater pool villa

Ask for the pool size. If you want to swim, a four-metre plunge pool will disappoint. Resorts will tell you the dimensions.
Think about shade. A pool on an open deck gets hot in the afternoon. Sunrise-facing villas are in shade by then.
Check privacy. On some jetties the decks face each other. End-of-jetty villas usually have the most private pools.
Look at what is under the deck. A pool is great, but if you also want to snorkel, choose a villa over the reef, not a shallow sandy lagoon. At The Residence Falhumaafushi, for example, the decks step straight into the lagoon with the house reef within swimming distance.
Match the meal plan to the island. On remote islands with all-inclusive options, like Angsana or Cora Cora, the plan often saves money.
Split the stay. Book beach nights first and the pool water villa last. You finish on the high point and spend less.

What is the cheapest way to get an overwater villa with a pool?

Look at smaller pool water villas at resorts near Malé, such as Velassaru’s 80 sq m Water Bungalow with Pool, or all-inclusive resorts like Cora Cora and Dhigali, where the pool villa price includes food and drink. Travelling between May and November usually brings better offers. We do not publish live rates, but we will quote you the options for your dates.

How big is the pool in a Maldives water villa?

Most are plunge pools of roughly four to seven metres. Baros publishes 6.6 m by 3.6 m for its Water Pool Villas, Cheval Blanc has 12.5 m infinity pools and Kudadoo 44 sq m pools. If you want to swim lengths, ask for the dimensions before you book.

Is a water villa with a jacuzzi the same as one with a pool?

No. Some resorts sell water villas with a hot tub or jacuzzi on the deck, which is lovely for a soak but not a pool you can swim in. Always check the exact category name.

Are overwater pool villas safe for children?

They can be, with care. The pool adds a second body of water next to the open lagoon, so ask for a pool fence or gate, check the ladder, and consider a two-bedroom villa or a family category such as Four Seasons Kuda Huraa’s Family Water Villa with Pool or Cora Cora’s two-bedroom villa. Some resorts set minimum ages for water villas.

Should I choose sunrise or sunset for an overwater pool villa?

Sunset villas face west and light up in the evening, and usually cost more. Sunrise villas get shade on the deck in the afternoon, which can make the pool more comfortable in the hottest months.
