Why North Malé

Why choose a luxury resort in North Malé Atoll?

North Malé Atoll wraps around the capital and the airport, so it is the quickest place in the country to go from the plane to your villa. There is no seaplane to wait for and no luggage limit to worry about: the resort team meets you in arrivals, walks you to the jetty and you are on the water within minutes.

That makes it the right atoll for late flights, short stays of three or four nights, and the start or end of a twin-centre trip. It is also where some of the country’s most famous resorts are, from Baros, one of the classic islands, to the newer Fari Islands, home to The Ritz-Carlton and Patina.

The trade-off is that you will see more boats, and on a clear night the lights of Malé or the airport from some islands. The reefs are good rather than spectacular. If marine life is your priority, look at Baa Atoll or Ari; if time on the island matters most, North Malé is hard to beat.

Vabbinfaru is a small, round island just 20 minutes from the airport, and it is the kind of place you can walk around barefoot in a few minutes. The house reef is the star: turtles, white-tip reef sharks and the odd manta ray, all close to the beach. There is a PADI Gold Palm dive centre and a marine lab.
Every villa is on the beach, with the Oceanview and Spa Sanctuary Pool Villas adding their own pools. Dinner is at Ilaafathi, at the Naiboli bar or out on the Sunset Jetty, and the team sets up sandbank dinners if you want a night away from the island.

Skip it if you want an overwater villa. Vabbinfaru has none.

Every villa at Gili Lankanfushi sits over the lagoon, and the smallest is 210 sqm, which is larger than many resorts’ best suite. Each comes with a Mr or Ms Friday, the island’s butler, and the “no news, no shoes” rule sets the tone from the moment you step off the boat.
The Crusoe Residences can only be reached by boat, and The Private Reserve, 300 metres from the nearest villa, has 1,400 sqm, its own spa and a resident team. The Underground wine cellar, the Meera Spa and Manta Point, about 10 minutes away by boat, complete the picture.

Best classic island for couples

Baros Maldives

Baros is one of the classic islands of the Maldives and still one of the most loved. It is 25 minutes from the airport, small enough to know your way round in a day, and the house reef is only a few metres from the beach. The dive centre first opened in 1979, so the team knows these reefs better than almost anyone.
Dinner at The Lighthouse, on its jetty above the lagoon, is the evening everyone remembers, with Cayenne and Lime for the other nights. Villas run from garden-shaded Deluxe Villas to water pool villas and a two-bedroom residence and retreat, each with butler service.

Skip it if you are travelling with children under eight. Baros only takes children aged eight and over.

Kuda Huraa is laid out like a Maldivian village, with thatched villas either side of a long garden walkway, and it has the easy, welcoming feel to match. Every villa has a pool; the water villas have 24 sqm infinity pools and steps down into the lagoon, and the family bungalows add a separate room for children.
Two things make it stand out. The Island Spa is the only spa in the Maldives on its own private island, a short dhoni ride away, and the resort runs a surf programme on the breaks nearby. Add the Kuda Mas kids’ club, Indian food at Baraabaru and sunsets at the Reef Club.

Huvafen Fushi has an adults’ island feel without being adults-only: children are welcome from the age of 12. All 46 bungalows and pavilions have their own pools, from lagoon bungalows to the two-bedroom Ocean Pavilions set 200 metres out in the lagoon with their own butler.
It is a resort built for evenings. Vinum was the first underground wine cellar in the Maldives, Salt serves Japanese food with a Latin twist over the water, and the spa has an underwater treatment room with views straight onto the reef. The speedboat takes about 30 minutes.

The Ritz-Carlton was designed by the late architect Kerry Hill, and it shows in the round, open villas that turn every view towards the water. It shares the Fari Islands with Patina, so you also get the Fari Marina Village, with its beach club and shops, on top of the resort’s own restaurants, from La Locanda to the overwater EAU Bar. The boat takes about 45 minutes, or 10 minutes by seaplane.

Patina feels more like a design hotel than a classic Maldives resort. The 90 villas and 20 Fari Studios were designed by Marcio Kogan of Studio MK27, and the island has a Skyspace by the artist James Turrell. Food is plant-forward and creative, with Brasa, Arabesque, Wok Society and Portico among the choices.

One&Only Reethi Rah is one of the largest islands in the Maldives, with 12 beaches, so even when it is full you can find a stretch of sand to yourself. Villas are spread out along the shore and over the water, and a Concierge looks after each one.
It is the best North Malé resort for teenagers, with the One Tribe club, plus KidsOnly for younger children, tennis, a climbing wall and football. Restaurants include Fanditha for Middle Eastern food at sunset, Hoshi for Japanese fusion and Botanica under a banyan tree. The luxury boat takes 45 to 55 minutes, or 15 by seaplane.

Skip it if you want the shortest possible crossing. Reethi Rah is one of the longer boat rides in the atoll.

Jumeirah Olhahali sits at the far northern tip of North Malé Atoll, and it swaps the traditional thatched look for bright, modern villas. Even the entry villa is 351 sqm overall, and every villa has a 120 sqm rooftop terrace, which is ideal for sunset drinks, a private film night or breakfast above the lagoon.
For families and groups there are two-bedroom residences of 680 sqm and two three-bedroom retreats of up to 997 sqm. The Talise Spa and a kids’ club round it off. It is the longest boat ride on this page at 55 minutes, so many guests take the 15-minute seaplane instead.

Landing late?

Late arrivals: why North Malé works at any hour

Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so a flight that lands in the late afternoon or evening usually rules out the further atolls, or means a night in a Malé hotel. Speedboats are different: they run at night, and the North Malé resorts meet late flights as a matter of routine.

Morning to early afternoonEvery option is open. Seaplanes fly roughly from 6 am to the last departures in mid-afternoon, so you could also choose a resort further away.
Late afternoonToo late for most seaplanes. North and South Malé resorts by speedboat are the easy answer, or a domestic flight to some atolls.
Evening and nightSpeedboat only. North Malé resorts meet late flights, so you can land at 11 pm and still sleep on your island, not in a Malé hotel.

How long is the speedboat from Malé airport to North Malé resorts?

Between 20 and 55 minutes. Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Gili Lankanfushi are about 20 minutes away, Baros and Kuda Huraa 25, the Fari Islands 45, and Jumeirah Olhahali 55. Times depend on the boat and the sea.

Can I reach a North Malé resort if my flight lands late at night?

Yes. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, but resort speedboats meet late flights, so you can land in the evening and still sleep on your island. We confirm the boat time with the resort for your flight.

Speedboat or seaplane: which is better in North Malé?

For most resorts here the speedboat is the only option and it is quick. The Ritz-Carlton (10 minutes), One&Only Reethi Rah and Jumeirah Olhahali (15 minutes) also offer seaplanes, which are worth it for the view, but they fly only in daylight and have luggage limits.

Is the speedboat ride rough?

Usually not. From December to April the sea is mostly calm. During the south-west monsoon, roughly May to October, it can be choppy, especially from June to August. If you are prone to seasickness, choose a shorter crossing, sit towards the back and take a tablet before you leave.

Are any North Malé resorts adults only?

None of our eleven is strictly adults only, but Huvafen Fushi takes children from 12 and Baros from eight, so both are calm and grown-up.

Which North Malé resort is best for families?

Four Seasons Kuda Huraa and One&Only Reethi Rah are the strongest, with kids’ clubs, family villas and, at Reethi Rah, a club for teenagers. Patina and the Ritz-Carlton on the Fari Islands are good for younger children too.

Is North Malé Atoll good for snorkelling and diving?

Yes, but house reefs vary. Baros and Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru have reefs close to the beach, and dive sites such as Banana Reef, HP Reef and Manta Point are a short boat ride away. For manta gatherings, Baa Atoll in season is better.

How much does a luxury holiday in North Malé Atoll cost?
