Is a wedding in the Maldives legally binding?
Not for foreign tourists. Maldivian law does not allow non-Muslim foreign couples to legally marry there, so resort weddings are symbolic ceremonies. Most couples marry legally at home, at a short registry appointment before or after the trip, and celebrate in the Maldives.
Can foreigners get married in the Maldives?
You can have a full wedding ceremony and celebration, but it is not a legal marriage. Resorts make this clear and some ask couples to sign an acknowledgement. Check with your home registry office for the legal side.
Do I need documents for a symbolic wedding in the Maldives?
Usually only your passport details, travel dates and ceremony choices. There is no marriage licence, birth certificate or certificate of no impediment, because the ceremony is not a legal marriage.
What is the best time of year for a Maldives wedding?
December to April, the dry north-east monsoon, has the most reliable weather and is the busiest wedding season. May and November are good value with generally good weather. Every resort has an indoor or covered back-up.
How many guests can we invite?
Anything from just the two of you to a whole private island. Smaller resorts suit up to about 20 guests; larger resorts, residences and private island buyouts suit bigger weddings.
Can we have a traditional Maldivian element?
Yes. Bodu beru drummers are part of most packages, and some resorts add a garland of flowers, local music or a Maldivian dinner.
Are same-sex weddings possible in the Maldives?
Same-sex marriage is not recognised under Maldivian law. Talk to us in confidence about resorts that are comfortable hosting a private celebration for two.
