Three resorts with properly documented fishing programmes, a domestic airport that flies after dark, and an atoll that has lived off tuna for generations. Here’s what Lhaviyani actually offers an angler, and what it doesn’t.
Lhaviyani Atoll is the strongest sport fishing choice in the northern Maldives, on the back of resort programmes rather than independent charter boats. Hurawalhi, Kuredu and Komandoo all publish structured big game fishing on their own websites, with dedicated boats, guest caps and set formats. Independent charter supply in the atoll is thin, so if you want a wide choice of boats or wadeable fly fishing flats, the far south still wins.
Big game peaks November to April on the northeast monsoon: sailfish, wahoo, yellowfin and the occasional marlin. Reef, night and sunset fishing run all year. Since February 2022 the atoll has its own domestic airport at Madivaru, so you can arrive on a late international flight and still get there the same night, something the seaplane has never been able to do.
Yes, with a distinction worth understanding before you book. What the north offers instead is resort-run fishing, and Lhaviyani does it better than any of its neighbours. Three properties here document their programmes publicly, more than Baa’s two and Noonu’s zero.
That changes who the atoll suits. If your trip is built around fishing every day from a choice of specialist boats, look at Huvadhoo or Laamu. If you’re planning a resort week where two or three serious fishing sessions sit alongside diving, the house reef and everything else a Maldives fishing holiday involves, Lhaviyani is arguably the best-organised atoll in the country for it.
The fishing pedigree is real, not marketing. Naifaru, the atoll capital, and Hinnavaru are working fishing communities where tuna boats still leave daily, and Felivaru has hosted the country’s tuna cannery since the late 1970s. The skippers who run resort fishing trips here grew up on these waters.
Two routes, and the difference matters more here than almost anywhere else in the Maldives.

Madivaru Airport opened in February 2022, and plenty of guides still haven’t caught up. Before it existed, a late landing at Velana meant an overnight near the airport and a seaplane the next morning. Now an evening domestic flight gets you into the atoll the same night. If your international flight lands after 15:00, ask us to price both routes; the domestic option usually wins on flexibility, the seaplane wins on the view.
There’s a fishing angle too. Lose a morning to a delayed transfer and you may lose your booked fishing slot, because resort big game boats run to a schedule. The after-dark option takes that risk mostly off the table.
These three publish their fishing offer on their own websites, which is our bar for listing anything. Where a resort doesn’t state something publicly, we say so rather than guessing. Claims below were checked against each property’s own pages in August 2026; formats and schedules change, so confirm the current version before you book.

All three sit in the same atoll as the Kuredu Express, one of the Maldives’ best-known channels, where tidal current pushes bait through the kandu and predators hold station to meet it. The same structure that made the channel famous with divers is what makes the atoll’s trolling and jigging grounds work.

Lhaviyani follows the national pattern, driven by the two monsoons. The northeast monsoon (Iruvai, November to April) brings dry weather, calm seas and the offshore big game peak. The southwest monsoon (Hulhangu, May to October) is wetter and rougher, and it’s when giant trevally fishing peaks nationally.

One caution on sources: at least one major charter marketplace publishes Maldives seasonality inverted, with sailfish in the wet season and GT in the dry. Local boats will tell you the opposite, and so does every page on this site. Independent charter choice is thin. A handful of small boats operate from Naifaru and Hinnavaru, and marketplace listings for them exist, but this is nothing like the depth of supply around Male’ or the southern atolls. There are no wadeable fly fishing flats. You’ll find listicles claiming Lhaviyani for bonefish and permit on the flats. Casting a fly from a boat in Lhaviyani is possible; a flats-walking trip here is not a real product.
It’s not a liveaboard hub. Multi-day fishing safaris overwhelmingly stage from the Male’ area. If you want six days living on the boat, start with our fishing liveaboard packages rather than a northern resort base.
A correction you should know about: some charter listings for this atoll advertise spearfishing among their techniques. Spearfishing is banned nationwide in the Maldives under Regulation R-75/2020, with no exemption for tourists, and using a spear gun is a prohibited activity full stop. A listing offering it tells you something about how carefully that crew reads the rules. Every trip we arrange fishes within the law, which protects you as much as the fishery.
Fishing in the Maldives runs under the Fisheries Act 14/2019, and the licence travels with the boat and its captain, not with you. As a guest you don’t need any paperwork; you do need to be on a properly licensed boat, which is part of what we check when we arrange one.
Three rules catch visitors out most often. All sharks are protected, and in these waters sharks will sometimes take a hooked fish on the way up; there’s nothing you or the crew can legally do about it. All rays, turtles, Napoleon wrasse and parrotfish are protected too, so anything on that list goes back regardless of how it was hooked. And within three miles of a government fish aggregating device, only traditional pole-and-line fishing is permitted, a rule your skipper will navigate around but which explains the occasional detour. Most Lhaviyani fishing happens as part of a resort stay, so the booking that matters is the whole week: the island, the villa, the transfer route and then the fishing sessions slotted in on the right days for the season and the weekly schedules. Booking the excursion first and the resort second is how people end up on an island whose fishing calendar doesn’t match their dates.

A speedboat completes the journey to your island. Seaplanes remain daylight-only, so before Madivaru opened, a late arrival meant overnighting near the airport.
It depends what you’re after. Kuredu suits families and anyone wanting flexible trip lengths. Its minimum angler age of 12 applies to the big game boat, and the resort describes its sunset hand line trip as a family outing. Komandoo is adults-only and runs the country’s only published pre-sunrise dhoni fishing departure. Hurawalhi stands out for anglers who care about how the fishery is managed, with a published policy covering catch limits, tagging and marine biologist monitoring. Yes, both are working fishing communities and guesthouse stays there can include fishing trips. Supply is thinner than on established guesthouse islands like Maafushi though, with only a handful of small boats, so availability on your exact dates is never guaranteed. Message us before you build a trip around it and we’ll confirm what can actually be arranged for your dates rather than leaving it to chance.
Not in the way some articles suggest. The wadeable flats that make Maldives fly fishing genuinely worthwhile, walking hard sand for trevally and triggerfish, sit in the far southern atolls, not here. No. Spearfishing is banned throughout the Maldives under Regulation R-75/2020, and using a spear gun is listed as a prohibited activity with no exemption for tourists or for any atoll. Some third-party charter listings for this region still advertise it, which is a red flag about the listing, not a sign the law has changed. Rod, handline, jig and popper fishing are all fully legal on licensed boats.
