Maldives Fishing Liveaboard Packages, Planned by Route

Maldives fishing liveaboard mothership at dawn anchorage with sport-fishing tender alongside

Maldives fishing liveaboard packages are multi-day sport-fishing trips where the boat becomes a moving base across the atolls. Instead of returning to one island each night, you follow reef edges, channel mouths and bluewater routes for GT, dogtooth tuna, yellowfin, wahoo, sailfish and marlin. With 1,100+ fish species across 26 atolls, route choice matters more than vessel choice. Plan by route first, then match the vessel.

Tell us your target species, travel month, group size and comfort level. We match the route, vessel, fishing days, meals and transfers into one quote.

What a Maldives fishing liveaboard package actually is

A Maldives fishing liveaboard is not accommodation on a boat with a rod loaned out for fun. It is a moving fishing base. The mothership sleeps you, feeds you and carries you between atolls overnight. The sport-fishing tenders push off each morning to work the productive ground for the day, then return for lunch or anchor up at the next mark by sunset. You wake up where you left off the night before.

This format suits anglers who want maximum water time across several days. The reef edges, channel mouths and bluewater drop-offs that produce the better GT, dogtooth and pelagic fishing are often a long run from any single resort. A liveaboard removes that constraint. The captain shifts the boat overnight, and the first cast of day two is at a fresh mark, not back where you started.

One distinction matters before you book. A dive liveaboard that offers occasional fishing is not the same product as a fishing-first liveaboard with popping, jigging and trolling built into the daily programme. The dive boat operates on a dive schedule, and fishing is a side activity. The fishing-first boat operates on a fishing schedule, with dedicated sport-fishing tenders, gaffs, fight chairs where relevant, and crew who know the productive marks. Choose accordingly. We coordinate both, but the right pick depends on whether your group is fishing-first or comfort-first.

Who should book a fishing liveaboard

The format suits some travellers and not others. Honest fit table:

Traveller typeLiveaboard fit
Serious GT and dogtooth anglersExcellent. The format that opens up the productive remote ground.
Mixed group of 4 to 8 anglersExcellent. Group economics favour shared cabin or whole-yacht charter at this size.
Couples where one person fishesWorks if the vessel comfort is high enough for the non-fishing companion. Premium tier or luxury mixed liveaboard, not a fishing-first sport-fisher.
Family with young childrenResort or guesthouse usually better. Liveaboards do not have kids’ clubs, pools or shore activities.
First-time Maldives visitor on a fishing tripWorks if fishing is the main reason for the trip. If fishing is a side activity, choose a 5-night fishing package with resort or guesthouse accommodation.
Casual sunset fishing guestNot the right format. The casual Maldives fishing experiences page covers sunset and night trips.

The honest filter: if your trip is mostly about fishing, a liveaboard is the format that gives you the most water time. If your trip is mostly about a Maldives holiday with some fishing inside it, a resort or guesthouse package with day charters usually fits better.

The four liveaboard routes

Map of Maldives fishing liveaboard routes covering Central, South Central, Deep South and Northern atolls

Route comes before vessel. The atoll group you cover decides the species you can realistically target, the distance the boat steams, the price band, and how weather-sensitive the trip is. Four working routes:

Route 1

Central Atolls

Atolls covered: MalΓ©, Vaavu, Meemu, Ari.

Best for:

  • First Maldives liveaboard
  • Mixed fishing and comfort
  • GT, wahoo, yellowfin, reef fish
  • Short windows from MalΓ© arrival

Trade-off: more boat traffic on the popular marks, less remote feel than southern routes.

Route 2

South Central

Atolls covered: Laamu, Thaa, Meemu.

Best for:

  • GT popping and stickbaiting
  • Jigging on channel structure
  • Mixed bluewater trolling
  • Fewer boats than the central grounds

Trade-off: domestic flight or longer crossing to position. See Laamu Atoll sport fishing for ground-level detail.

Route 3

Deep South

Atolls covered: Huvadhoo, Fuvahmulah, Addu.

Best for:

  • Serious GT on remote reef edges
  • Dogtooth tuna on channel structure
  • Yellowfin in the open water
  • Experienced anglers

Two distinct fishing windows:

  • January to April – calmer seas, the productive window for deep jigging on the channel structure for dogtooth and for open-water yellowfin trolling.
  • August to October – rougher open water under the southwest monsoon, but the surface action turns on. The window for aggressive GT popping when conditions allow.

Trade-off: highest cost, domestic flights, weather windows matter. See Huvadhoo Atoll sport fishing for the southern channels.

Route 4

Northern

Atolls covered: Baa, Raa, Noonu, Lhaviyani.

Best for:

  • Mixed fishing and diving companions
  • Sailfish, wahoo, tuna trolling
  • Resort and luxury yacht overlap

Trade-off: not the hardcore GT and dogtooth route. Better fit when comfort matters as much as catch rate.

Ari, North MalΓ© and South MalΓ© atolls also see fishing-liveaboard traffic and feature on most Central itineraries. Addu and Fuvahmulah sit south of the equator on the Deep South route and need a domestic flight to position, or several extra days at sea if running from MalΓ©.

5-night, 7-night or 10-night: picking your duration

Duration is the next decision after route. Each length unlocks a different geography and a different number of full fishing days.

DurationRealistic regionsFull fishing daysBest suited to
5 nightsCentral Atolls only3First-timers, short trips, anglers testing the format
7 nightsCentral plus South Central5The all-rounder. Most serious anglers’ default.
10 to 12 nightsSouth Central plus Deep South8 to 10Committed anglers chasing GT, dogtooth and remote ground

A 3-night format is not typically offered as a true liveaboard because the time-on-grounds maths does not work out. If your window is three nights, a resort-based 3-night fishing package with day charters is the better fit. For the sweet-spot 7-night option, see our 7-night fishing package which covers the liveaboard tier alongside resort and guesthouse options.

Species you can target by route

The catch list depends on the route, the season and the conditions on the day. No serious crew guarantees fish, ours included. Here is the honest picture of what each route puts you in front of, and how the responsible Maldivian fishing convention treats each species:

GT, dogtooth, sailfish and marlin are catch-and-release under responsible Maldivian sport-fishing convention. Yellowfin, wahoo, mahi-mahi and the reef species are typically kept and form the basis of the on-board meals. Sharks are not targeted on tourist sport-fishing trips, and accidental shark catches are released immediately. Numbers and sizes vary year to year with currents, water temperature and bait movement, and the captain will be honest if a particular technique is not producing on the day.

Techniques built into liveaboard days

Before the techniques themselves, the operational split that decides how a fishing day actually runs: the mothership doesn’t fish. The 30 to 50 metre mothership handles accommodation, meals and the long movement between marks. The actual fishing happens from dedicated tenders – typically 7 to 9 metre walkaround sport-fishers with twin outboards, or traditional Maldivian dhonis rigged for fishing. The tenders run shallow enough to cast right into the reef breakers where the bigger fish feed, while the mothership stays in the safe deep water of the lagoon.

A productive liveaboard day usually mixes two or three techniques as the captain reads the tides, current and time of day. Five techniques make up the bulk of the programme:

What’s included, what’s usually extra

Inclusions vary by vessel tier and route, but the broad pattern is consistent. Here is what to expect a fishing liveaboard quote to bundle in and what to expect itemised separately:

Usually included

  • Cabin with en-suite, air-conditioning
  • Captain and crew
  • Chef and all meals on board
  • Drinking water, tea, coffee, soft drinks
  • Daily fishing days and tender support
  • Fuel allowance for the planned route
  • Airport-to-yacht and yacht-to-airport transfers (from MalΓ©)
  • Basic trolling, jigging and handline gear on board
  • Bedding, cabin towels, deck towels

Usually extra

  • International flights
  • Domestic flights if the route starts or ends outside MalΓ©
  • Alcoholic and premium drinks
  • Crew tips
  • Specialist tackle hire (heavy popping setups, premium reels)
  • Lost or damaged premium lures
  • Private dedicated guide or hosted angler
  • Travel insurance
  • Pre- and post-trip hotel nights in MalΓ©
  • Nitrox or diving extras on mixed boats

Two taxes are itemised on every quote: 17% TGST, effective from 1 July 2025, applied to the package total; and Green Tax at USD 12 per person per night on tourist vessels including liveaboards. Fuel surcharges of USD 150 to 300 per week are common on Deep South itineraries and longer crossings. We confirm inclusions line by line on every quote so you can see what is in and what is out before you commit.

Bring your own tackle, or use ours?

Heavy jigging and popping setups laid out on a Maldives fishing liveaboard deck

Most vessels in our fleet carry serviceable trolling gear, basic spinning rods, jigging setups and hand-lines. That covers the casual side of the programme and the mixed-technique days. For the serious popping and jigging work that the Maldives is known for, most experienced anglers prefer their own kit.

If you are coming specifically for GT popping or dogtooth jigging, plan to bring your own:

ComponentWhat to bring
Heavy spinning reelLarge-spool reel in the 18,000 to 30,000 class
Mainline (popping)PE6 to PE10 braid
Shock leader100lb to 150lb fluorocarbon, to survive sharp coral drop-offs
Popping rodRated to the line class, 7’6″ to 8’6″ typical
Surface luresPoppers and stickbaits, 100g to 200g range
Jigging setupPE3 to PE6 jigging rod with high-speed jigging reel
Jigs200 to 400 gram metal jigs, assorted weights and colours
Terminal tackleSplit rings, assist hooks, swivels, leader spools
ToolsPliers, fish-handling gloves, fish grips

Domestic baggage warning for southern routes. Deep South and South Central routes typically require a domestic flight from MalΓ© to position you closer to the grounds. Maldivian domestic carriers strictly enforce a 20kg checked baggage limit per passenger. Heavy rod tubes and tackle cases push most serious anglers over that limit, and the sports-equipment surcharge applies at the domestic terminal, not at international check-in. We confirm what each vessel carries before you commit so you can pack accordingly and budget for the domestic excess if needed.

Maldives fishing liveaboard cost: realistic ranges

Pricing varies by route, vessel tier, group size, season and what’s bundled in. There are two ways quotes are typically built: as a whole-vessel day rate that the group splits, or as a per-angler shared-cabin rate where you take a berth on a scheduled trip.

Indicative whole-vessel day rates (group, before taxes):

Indicative per-angler shared-cabin rates (before taxes):

Package typeIndicative range per angler
Shared fishing liveaboard berth, 3 to 7 nightsUSD 1,500 to 3,500
Private small-group fishing liveaboardUSD 3,000 to 6,000
Whole-yacht private charter (group)USD 3,500 to 5,000+ per day per group
Deep South fishing expeditionUSD 4,000 to 7,000+
Luxury mixed fishing and cruising liveaboardUSD 4,000 to 8,000+

Whole-yacht charter typically pays for itself in per-angler terms when your group is eight or more. Below that, single-cabin bookings on a scheduled run usually work out cheaper, with the trade-off that your dates are fixed to the vessel’s calendar and you may share the boat with other guests.

Prices vary by season, vessel, fuel allowance, group size, route and dates. Final quotes confirm all taxes and fees upfront, including 17% TGST and USD 12 per person per night Green Tax on tourist vessels.

Liveaboard vs guesthouse fishing package: when to choose which

Liveaboards and land-based packages serve different goals. A liveaboard maximises water time and remote access; a guesthouse or resort base maximises stability, cost flexibility and the local-island experience. Choose by what you want from the trip, not by what looks cheaper on paper.

FactorLiveaboardGuesthouse package

The clean rule: if fishing is the trip, choose a liveaboard. If fishing is part of the trip, choose a land-based 5-night or 7-night fishing package with day charters. Our Maldives fishing charters overview covers the day-charter side in detail. For the broader picture across all formats, see our complete guide to sport fishing in the Maldives.

Frequently asked questions

Are Maldives fishing liveaboards worth it?

For serious anglers chasing GT, dogtooth tuna and remote ground, yes. The format gives you the most water time and unlocks reef edges and channel mouths that no single resort can reach. For casual or family trips, a resort-based package with day charters usually fits better at lower cost.

How much does a Maldives fishing liveaboard cost?

Shared-cabin rates run from around USD 1,500 to 3,500 per angler for 3 to 7 nights on standard fishing liveaboards, USD 3,000 to 6,000 per angler for premium small-group trips, and USD 4,000 to 7,000+ per angler for Deep South expeditions. Whole-vessel charter rates start from around USD 4,200 per day for the group. TGST at 17% and Green Tax at USD 12 per person per night are added to all quotes.

What fish can you catch from a Maldives fishing liveaboard?

The realistic target list across routes covers Giant Trevally, dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, sailfish, blue marlin and a range of reef species including grouper, jobfish, snapper and emperor. GT, dogtooth, sailfish and marlin are catch-and-release under responsible convention. Yellowfin, wahoo, mahi-mahi and reef species are kept.

What’s included in a fishing liveaboard package?

The cabin, all meals, captain and crew, fishing days with tender support, fuel allowance for the planned route, and airport transfers from MalΓ©. Usually extra: international and domestic flights, alcohol, crew tips, premium tackle hire, and pre- or post-trip hotel nights. 17% TGST and USD 12 per person per night Green Tax are itemised on every quote.

Do I need to bring my own fishing gear?

Most vessels carry serviceable trolling, jigging and handline gear. If you are coming specifically for GT popping or dogtooth jigging, plan to bring your own heavy spinning setup (PE6 to PE10), jigging setup, and your full lure box. We confirm what each vessel carries before booking so you can pack accordingly.

Which route is best for a fishing liveaboard in the Maldives?

Central Atolls suit first liveaboards and mixed groups. South Central (Laamu, Thaa, Meemu) is the all-rounder for serious anglers. Deep South (Huvadhoo, Fuvahmulah, Addu) is the most committed itinerary and unlocks the best GT and dogtooth ground. Northern routes suit mixed fishing-and-comfort groups. The right choice depends on your dates, group, target species and how remote you’re willing to go.

Is a liveaboard better than a guesthouse fishing package?

Better at maximising fishing time and remote access. Not better at cost flexibility or local-island experience. If fishing is the main reason for the trip, choose a liveaboard. If fishing is part of a broader Maldives holiday, choose a guesthouse or resort package with day charters.

How many anglers can join a fishing liveaboard?

Most fishing liveaboards in our fleet take 8 to 20 guests in 4 to 11 cabins. Shared-cabin bookings work for solo anglers and small groups of 2 to 4. Groups of 8 or more often work out better on a whole-yacht private charter where the per-angler economics improve and you control the itinerary, dates and crew briefing.

What’s the best season for Maldives fishing liveaboards?

The northeast monsoon (November to April) brings flatter water, easier crossings and the peak season for yellowfin, wahoo and billfish. The southwest monsoon (May to October) is the better window for GT popping with quieter grounds and stronger surface activity, with the trade-off that weather windows need watching. Dogtooth, GT and reef species are productive year-round. No season guarantees fish, and the captain will read the conditions on the day.

Are GT and dogtooth released on liveaboard trips?

Yes. Giant Trevally and dogtooth tuna are catch-and-release on responsible Maldivian sport-fishing trips. Marlin and sailfish are catch-and-release as standard. Yellowfin, wahoo, mahi-mahi and reef species are kept and typically form the basis of the evening meal on board. Sharks are not targeted, and accidental shark catches are released immediately.
