Dogtooth Tuna Fishing in the Maldives

Every other tuna runs for open water when you hook it. The doggie runs straight back down into the reef to cut you off. That one difference is what makes this the hardest fish to land here.

The short answer

Dogtooth tuna are caught almost entirely by vertical jigging over deep structure, usually in 20 to 80 metres of water, along the channel edges and drop-offs of the southern atolls. Best months are November to April.

You’ll want heavy tackle. A PE6 to PE8 setup, a rod rated for jigs up to around 400g, and the drag wound tighter than instinct tells you. There’s no such thing as playing a doggie gently.

Go to Huvadhoo or Laamu. The Male’ atolls hold them, but the southern channels hold the good ones.

How we put this together

We’re a Ministry of Tourism licensed travel agency based in Male’, and we book jigging trips across the southern atolls. The tackle guidance below reflects what our skippers actually rig and what visiting anglers bring, cross-checked against the wider consensus among Indian Ocean jigging operators. Where something varies by conditions, we say so rather than pretending there’s one right answer.

What you’re actually dealing with

Gymnosarda unicolor. Locally, and everywhere else in the Indian Ocean, just “the doggie”. They’re solitary or move in small groups, they live from about 10 metres down to 300, and they grow to around 2.5 metres and 130 kilograms, though anything over 40kg here is a serious fish.

Here’s what matters, and what most guides bury: a hooked dogtooth doesn’t behave like a tuna. Yellowfin, skipjack, bigeye, they all bolt for open water when they feel the hook, which means the fight is long but the outcome is usually decided by stamina. A doggie turns and drives back down into the structure it came from. It knows exactly where the coral is and it’s trying to put your braid across it.

Which is why every experienced jigging skipper will tell you the same thing: the fight is decided in the first ten seconds. Turn its head immediately or you don’t land it. That’s also why the drag goes on tight and stays tight, and why anglers used to lighter tackle lose fish here.

Anything over 40kg is a genuinely good fish here, and the best come from the lightly fished south.

Set your expectations honestly. You’ll lose more dogtooth than you land, and that’s true for good anglers on good boats. Between the reef, the sheer power of the fish and the occasional shark, a decent hookup-to-landing ratio on doggies would be an embarrassing one on almost any other species. Come for the experience of hooking them, not for a photo count.

Where and when

Dogtooth hold on structure. Channel edges, drop-offs, pinnacles and any piece of reef where current pushes bait up against something solid. In the Maldives that means the outer edges of the atolls, and it means the south more than the north.

The season

November to April is the peak, matching the northeast monsoon. Calmer seas make holding position over structure far easier, and the water clarity helps. October is good as conditions settle, and May through September is workable but noticeably less consistent.

That’s roughly the inverse of GT season, which is worth knowing if you’re planning a trip around both. A December to March trip gives you dogtooth at their best with GT still perfectly catchable. Our month-by-month season guide lays out the full calendar.

Tackle

This is not the trip to bring your all-purpose setup. Doggies find weak points in gear with almost unfair reliability, and the weak point is usually a split ring or an assist hook rather than the line.

Jig weight is chosen by depth and drift speed rather than by preference. The stronger the current, the heavier you go, because a jig that won’t hold vertical isn’t fishing. Most boats carry a spread of weights and the crew will tell you what to tie on.

Jig weight is chosen by depth and drift speed. A jig that will not hold vertical is not fishing.

You don’t have to own all this. Plenty of Maldives operators hire out jigging tackle, and for a first trip that’s a sensible way to find out whether you enjoy it before spending serious money on rods. Tell us when you book and we’ll confirm what’s available on your boat. If you are bringing your own, pack it in a hard tube as checked sporting equipment and check your airline’s allowance.

How it’s actually fished

Vertical jigging

  • The primary method, and what most trips will do
  • Boat positioned up-current of the structure, then drifted over it
  • Jig dropped to the bottom or to a marked depth, then worked back up
  • Fast vertical retrieves or slow-pitch, depending on the day
  • Strikes often come as the jig lifts, and they’re violent

Other methods that work

  • Slow-trolling live skipjack or rainbow runner, their natural prey
  • Live bait on a downrigger over structure
  • Stickbaits cast to reef edges, which occasionally raises them
  • Poppers, rarely, usually as a bycatch while GT fishing
  • Trolled diving lures along channel mouths

Boat positioning matters more than most anglers expect. A good skipper reads the current and sets the drift so your jig passes the structure at the right depth, rather than dropping you straight on top of it. That’s a skill, and it’s most of why a local skipper who knows the marks outperforms a better boat that doesn’t.

The shark problem, and why you can’t do anything about it. Dogtooth share their ground with reef sharks, and a fish fighting hard on the way up is an obvious meal. Losing a hooked doggie to a shark is common enough here that skippers plan around it, mostly by moving off a mark once it starts happening. What you cannot do is anything about the sharks themselves. Recreational shark fishing is prohibited in the Maldives, all shark species are protected, and fines for fishing them run to MVR 100,000. If a shark takes your fish, that’s the day. Our fishing regulations guide covers the current position, including the limited commercial gulper fishery that reopened in late 2025 and does not apply to charters.

What kind of trip you need

Dogtooth jigging isn’t something you tack onto a resort holiday and expect much from. It wants a boat set up for it, a skipper who knows the marks, and enough days that a couple of blank sessions don’t sink the trip.

Trip typeRealistic outcome
One day from a North Male’ resortYou might hook one. Treat anything landed as a bonus
Private charter, 2 to 3 days, southern atollReasonable shot at fish, though weather can eat a day
5 to 7 nights, Huvadhoo or Laamu basedThe sensible minimum for a trip built around doggies
Liveaboard, southern routeBest odds. The boat moves to the structure and the conditions

If dogtooth is genuinely the target rather than a nice-to-have, a fishing liveaboard working the southern atolls is the strongest option, because it can sit on good structure through a tide rather than running back to an island. Failing that, base yourself in Huvadhoo for a week and take private charter days.

Our Maldives fishing holidays page explains how the whole trip gets assembled, and fishing costs covers what private charter days run to.

Handling and release

Dogtooth are magnificent eating and they’re not a protected species, so keeping one is legal and normal. That said, a few things are worth knowing.

  • Mind the teeth. The name isn’t decorative. Let the crew handle the fish at the boat.
  • Barotrauma is real. A fish brought up fast from 60 or 80 metres often can’t be released successfully. If you’re going to release, decide before you start the fight, and fish shallower marks.
  • Take what you’ll eat. Most boats will fillet for you, and resorts and guesthouses will usually cook it.
  • Big fish are worth more alive. A large breeding doggie on a lightly fished reef does more good in the water than in a cool box, and the southern atolls stay good precisely because pressure is low.

None of that is a rule. It’s how the skippers we work with think about it, and we’d rather say it than not.

Common questions

What is the best way to catch dogtooth tuna in the Maldives?

Vertical jigging over deep structure, in roughly 20 to 80 metres of water along channel edges and drop-offs. Jigs of 200 to 400 grams on a PE6 to PE8 setup are standard. Slow-trolling live skipjack or rainbow runner also works, and they occasionally take stickbaits or poppers cast at reef edges, usually as a bycatch while GT fishing.

When is the best time for dogtooth tuna in the Maldives?

November to April, during the northeast monsoon, when calmer seas make it far easier to hold position over structure. October is good as conditions settle. May to September is workable but less consistent. This is roughly the opposite of peak giant trevally season.

Where are the best dogtooth tuna spots in the Maldives?

The southern atolls. Huvadhoo has the best combination of deep channel structure and very low fishing pressure, with Laamu close behind. Thaa and Meemu are good and usually fished from a liveaboard. Dogtooth are present in North Male’ too, but that water is heavily fished and the fish run smaller.

What tackle do I need for dogtooth tuna?

A heavy jigging rod rated to around 400 grams, a PE6 to PE8 class reel with strong drag, matching braid, a heavy fluorocarbon leader and jigs from 200 to 400 grams. Use the heaviest hooks and split rings that fit, because that is where most fish are lost. Practise your PR or FG knot before you travel. Many Maldives operators hire jigging tackle if you would rather not buy it for a first trip.

Why are dogtooth tuna so hard to land?

Because they run the wrong way. Most tuna bolt for open water when hooked, so the fight is about stamina. A dogtooth turns and drives back into the reef it came from, trying to part your line on coral. The fight is effectively decided in the first ten seconds, which is why drags are set tight and light tackle simply loses fish.

How big do dogtooth tuna get in the Maldives?

The species reaches around 2.5 metres and 130 kilograms globally. In the Maldives, anything over 40 kilograms is a genuinely good fish, and the larger specimens come from the lightly fished southern atolls rather than the busy water around Male’.

Do sharks take hooked dogtooth tuna in the Maldives?

Yes, and it is common enough that skippers plan around it by moving off a mark once it starts. A dogtooth fighting on the way up is an easy target. There is nothing you can do about it: recreational shark fishing is prohibited in the Maldives, all shark species are protected, and fines run to MVR 100,000.

Can beginners catch dogtooth tuna?

Yes, though it is physically demanding and you should expect to lose more fish than you land. Jigging is hard work in itself before any fish is hooked. If you have never jigged before, tell the skipper, start with lighter jigs in shallower water, and treat the first day as learning. A guided day with an experienced crew is worth far more than better tackle.

Tackle specifications are general guidance reflecting common practice among Indian Ocean jigging operators and what our own skippers rig. They are a starting point, not a prescription, and the right jig weight on any given day depends on depth and drift. We do not publish specific charter marks or coordinates.

Sources and limitations. Species information on Gymnosarda unicolor, depth range and size draws on published sportfishing references and our own charter experience. Regulatory points on shark protection are summarised from the Fisheries Act of the Maldives (Law No. 14/2019) and the General Fisheries Regulation (Regulation No. R-75/2020). Tackle availability, hire options and boat setup vary by operator and must be confirmed at the time of booking.
