There is no closed season here. Something bites every day of the year. What changes is which fish are running, which atoll fishes best, and what the sea does while you are out on it.
For big game and billfish, come between November and April. January to March is the genuine peak: calm seas, good visibility, and sailfish, marlin, wahoo and yellowfin all running at once.
For giant trevally on poppers, come between May and October. It rains more and the sea is rougher, but that is exactly what pushes bait onto the reef edges and switches the GT on.
For sunset, night and reef fishing, any month works. These trips run inside the atoll in sheltered water, so the monsoon barely matters.
This is the same calendar our team uses when someone tells us what they want to catch and asks when to come. Read across the row for your target species.

Peak season Good fishing Fair, depends on conditions Off-peak, possible but inconsistent
The one thing most guides get wrong. Plenty of articles tell you November to April is “the fishing season” and leave it there. That is only true if you want billfish. If you have come for giant trevally, the best months are the wet ones, and June and July are as good as it gets. Two different trips, two different calendars.
What each month actually feels like on the water, and where we would send you.
Everything above comes down to which way the wind blows. Once you understand that, the calendar makes sense.
The dry season. Lighter winds, calmer water, better visibility, and the strongest big-game fishing of the year. Wind comes from the northeast, so the eastern sides of atolls stay protected while the west takes the chop.
Trolling is the default. Billfish move through. You can fish all day offshore without the sea deciding otherwise.
The wet season. The wind swings around, the sheltered sides of each atoll flip, and short rain showers become a near-daily thing. It sounds worse than it fishes.
This is the giant trevally season. Wave action and shifting current push baitfish onto the reef edges, and the GT feed hard on the surface. You fish in windows rather than straight through.
April, May, October and November sit between the two systems. They can be superb, with flat days and both species mixes overlapping, or they can be unpredictable. The risk is weather variance. The reward is fewer boats on the water and a wider range of fish than either peak gives you on its own.
If you already know what kind of trip you want, start here instead of the calendar.
| You want | Best months | Where we would send you | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marlin or sailfish | Dec to Mar | Deep water off any atoll rim, southern atolls for least pressure | Jun, Jul |
| Giant trevally on poppers | Jun to Sep | Huvadhoo, Laamu | Jan to Mar for peak aggression |
| Dogtooth tuna on the jig | Nov to Apr | Huvadhoo, Laamu, deep channel edges | May to Sep |
| Saltwater fly on the flats | Nov to Mar | Southern atoll sand flats | Jun, Jul |
| First fishing trip ever | Any month | North Male’, South Male’, Maafushi | Nothing. Sheltered trips run year-round |
| Family trip with some fishing | Any month | Ari Atoll resorts and guesthouses | Nothing, though Dec to Mar is driest |
| Best value, fewest boats | May, Jun, Sep, Oct | Southern atolls, liveaboard bases | Dec to Mar peak pricing |
| Widest species mix | Oct, Nov, Apr | Central and southern atolls | Deep Jul if you want billfish too |
A local note on rain. Southwest monsoon rain in the Maldives is not a washout. It usually arrives as a heavy shower for twenty minutes, then clears. Skippers plan around it rather than cancel for it. What actually costs you a day is wind, not rain, and that is why a boat which can move to the sheltered side of an atoll matters more in these months than the forecast does.
Wind direction decides which side of an atoll is calm, and that changes where a boat can comfortably reach on a given day. It is worth thinking about before you book a room, not after.
From November to April, eastern sides of atolls sit in the lee. From May to October it flips. A resort or guesthouse on the wrong side does not stop you fishing, but it does mean a longer, wetter run to the good water each morning.
This matters most in the far south. Huvadhoo and Laamu hold the least-pressured fish in the country, but both need a domestic flight from Male’, so a lost day costs more there than it would in North Male’. If you are travelling specifically to fish in the southwest monsoon, a fishing liveaboard that can reposition overnight is usually the better call than a fixed base.

February and March, if you want the widest range of big-game species in the calmest conditions. Billfish, wahoo, yellowfin and dogtooth all run strongly, and the sea is usually flat enough for long offshore days. If giant trevally is your target, the answer flips to June or July.
No. Fishing runs all year. What changes is which species are running and which side of each atoll is sheltered. Reef, sunset and night fishing trips operate every month because they stay inside the atoll in calm water.
Yes, and for giant trevally it is the better season. Southwest monsoon rain usually comes as short heavy showers rather than all-day weather. Wind is what shortens a fishing day, not rain. Boats work around it by moving to the sheltered side of the atoll.
May to October, peaking from June to September. The southwest monsoon pushes baitfish onto reef edges and triggers aggressive surface feeding. See our GT fishing guide for tackle and technique.
December through March, with February and March the strongest. Marlin are possible outside those months but far less consistent, and June and July are genuinely poor for billfish.
November to March. You need calm water and good light to sight-cast, and those months deliver both. Wading is difficult in the southwest monsoon. Our Maldives fly fishing guide covers the flats atoll by atoll.
The southern atolls, Huvadhoo and Laamu in particular, hold larger fish and see far less fishing pressure. The trade-off is a domestic flight from Male’ and higher trip cost. North and South Male’ fish well and suit shorter trips or a first visit.
For January to March, three to six months ahead. That period is peak for both fishing and tourism, so good boats and skippers go early. For May, June, September and October you have far more flexibility, and shorter lead times are usually fine. Availability is always subject to confirmation.
Seasonality above reflects long-run patterns across the Maldivian atolls and our own charter experience. Fishing is never guaranteed and conditions vary year to year. Species availability, boat availability and pricing are subject to confirmation before booking. Last reviewed August 2026.
