A car-free fishing island of a few hundred people, ninety minutes by speedboat from the airport, where nurse sharks come to the harbour every night.
Fulidhoo is a small inhabited island at the northern tip of Vaavu Atoll, about ninety minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport. Sunset and night fishing are the trips almost everyone books: a dhoni anchors over a reef edge before dark and you fish handlines over both sides. Morning trolling trips run outside the atoll along the reef for tuna and wahoo.
It’s a fishing island first and a tourist island second, which is the appeal. We’re a Ministry of Tourism licensed agency in Male’, we arrange the boat, and we confirm the boat and the rate before you pay anything.
Every evening, the island’s fishermen clean their catch at the jetty. Nurse sharks turn up for the scraps, along with stingrays, and they have been doing it long enough that it’s now the thing Fulidhoo is known for. You can stand on the harbour wall and watch them circle in a metre of water.
Two things worth understanding about that.
First, it’s a by-product of a working fishery, not a show. The sharks come because the fish are being cleaned. That’s also why the timing shifts with the boats rather than with a schedule.
Second, and this catches people out: every shark in Maldivian waters is protected, nurse sharks included. You can’t fish for them, you can’t keep one, and if one takes your bait on a night trip you release it. The blanket ban that ran from 2010 was partly lifted on 1 November 2025, but only for a limited licensed commercial gulper shark fishery outside the atolls. Nothing changed for visitors or charters.

Fulidhoo sits on the atoll rim, so the outer reef and the channel edges are close. Vaavu has some of the strongest current channels in the country, which is what makes its dive sites famous and its fishing good.

The evening trips are the ones that run reliably and the ones the island is set up for. Big game here depends entirely on which boat is available, so ask before you build a trip around it.

There’s no airport on Fulidhoo and no seaplane service. You come by boat, and the boats leave when they leave.
Around ninety minutes from the airport, with departures typically twice a day, late morning and mid afternoon. Times vary by boat and season. Our Male’ to Fulidhoo ferry and speedboat guide has the current schedules and booking detail.
The MTCC public ferry runs the Male’ to Fulidhoo route far more cheaply and far more slowly, and not every day. On a short trip it can cost you two days out of a week. Current timings are in the transfer guide.
The arrival-day trap. Speedboat transfers to Fulidhoo run on fixed departures, not on demand. If your international flight lands after the afternoon boat has gone, you’re staying in Male’ or Hulhumale’ overnight and travelling the next morning. Check your landing time against the actual departure times before you book the fishing, not after. If you want to fish on your arrival night instead, Hulhumale’ fishing charters leave ten minutes from the airport.
Worth stating plainly, because at least one travel guide currently describes Fulidhoo as a traditional fishing island in South Ari Atoll. It’sn’t. Fulidhoo is the northernmost inhabited island of Vaavu, also called Felidhu Atoll, and South Ari is a different atoll entirely on the other side of the country’s central chain.
This matters more than a geography quibble. South Ari is the whale shark atoll, so anyone booking Fulidhoo expecting whale shark season is booking the wrong island. Vaavu’s draw is different: strong channels, Fotteyo Kandu, nurse sharks at the jetty, and a fishing community that has been there for centuries.

The same two monsoons shape the year everywhere in the Maldives. Northeast runs November to April, calmer and drier, with the strongest big game fishing. Southwest runs May to October, wetter and rougher offshore, and it’s when giant trevally fishing peaks.

Evening reef trips run year round because they stay inside sheltered water. What changes with the season is the crossing. Vaavu’s channels move a lot of water, and a ninety minute speedboat run in the southwest monsoon is a different experience from the same run in February. Shared evening trips are among the cheapest fishing you can book anywhere in the country, because you’re sharing a local dhoni rather than chartering a sport boat. A private boat costs considerably more.

Three things specific to Fulidhoo when you compare quotes.
A return speedboat from the airport is a real per-person cost and it applies whether you fish or not. Factor it in before comparing a Fulidhoo trip against a charter from the capital, where there’s no transfer at all.
A per-person price on a sunset trip means a shared dhoni with other guests. That’s fine, and it’s how most people fish here, but it’sn’t comparable to a per-boat rate.
TGST has been 17% since July 2025. Guesthouse stays on an inhabited island carry green tax at the guesthouse rate rather than the resort rate. Ask whether a quoted rate is inclusive.
Fulidhoo has a few hundred residents, a handful of guesthouses, a few cafes, and no cars. You can walk the whole island in a few minutes. There are two designated bikini beaches at the eastern and western ends, and the western one is where people watch the sunset. It’s an inhabited island, so the usual rules apply and they’re worth knowing in advance. No alcohol is sold or served anywhere. Swimwear belongs on the bikini beaches rather than in the village, where shoulders and knees should be covered. The day runs around prayer times and the fishing fleet.
Bodu beru, the traditional drumming, is genuinely part of island life here rather than a staged performance, and evenings on the beach are how people actually spend their time. The honest version. This is a very small island with a very small number of boats. Evening trips run reliably. A dedicated big game day depends on one or two boats being free and the weather cooperating, and if it doesn’t happen there’s no alternative boat to call. You’ve also paid for a ninety minute transfer each way on fixed departures.
Come here for the island, with fishing as a large part of it rather than the entire point. Three nights or more, evenings on the water, days on the reef, and no fixed expectations about a trophy fish.
Fish from the capital instead if you’re on a short trip or want a serious offshore day with a proper boat. Male’ fishing charters and Hulhumale’ fishing charters both give you far more choice with no transfer to build around.
If quieter water is what you’re after but you want a real boat and an airport, Kudahuvadhoo fishing charters in Dhaalu Atoll is the better version of that idea. Rates move with fuel, season and boat, so we keep all our charter pricing on one page rather than publishing a figure here that goes stale. By boat. There’s no airport on the island and no seaplane service. A shared speedboat takes roughly ninety minutes from Velana International Airport and typically runs twice a day, late morning and mid afternoon, though times vary by boat and season. A public ferry is far cheaper but much slower and doesn’t run daily. Your guesthouse normally arranges the transfer.

No. Fulidhoo is the northernmost inhabited island of Vaavu Atoll, also known as Felidhu Atoll. Some travel guides get this wrong. It matters because South Ari is the whale shark atoll, so anyone booking Fulidhoo expecting whale sharks has booked the wrong island. Vaavu’s attractions are its strong channels, dive sites like Fotteyo Kandu, and the nurse sharks at the harbour.
Sometimes, but don’t build a trip around it without confirming first. The island is set up for evening handline trips and morning trolling on local dhonis. A dedicated big game day depends on a suitable boat being free, and there are only one or two. If offshore fishing is the main purpose of your trip, the capital or a liveaboard will serve you far better.
No. Fulidhoo is an inhabited local island, and alcohol isn’t sold or served on inhabited islands anywhere in the Maldives, which includes boats operating from them. Swimwear is for the two designated bikini beaches rather than the village, where covering shoulders and knees is expected. If those things matter, a resort stay or a licensed liveaboard is the alternative.
Three or more. You’re travelling ninety minutes each way on fixed departures, so a one or two night trip loses most of its value to transfers. With three or four nights you’ve room to move a fishing evening if the weather turns, time to see the island, and a realistic shot at a morning trolling trip as well as the evening reef sessions.
