A local island with its own airport, an hour from the capital, on water that sees a fraction of the fishing pressure.
Kudahuvadhoo is the capital of Dhaalu Atoll and the only island in it with an airport, roughly 40 minutes by domestic flight from Male’. Fishing runs from the island’s harbour: sunset and night handline trips on the reef, and full or half-day charters out to the channel edges and the outer reef for tuna, wahoo and giant trevally.
The reason to come here rather than the capital is pressure. Dhaalu sees a fraction of the boat traffic that North Male’ Atoll does. The trade-off is a flight and fewer boats to choose from. Dhaalu, administratively Southern Nilandhe Atoll, sits roughly 150 to 190 kilometres southwest of Male’. It stretches about 23 kilometres east to west and 38 north to south, and it only opened to tourism in 1998.
That late start matters. The atoll has a handful of resorts and a small number of inhabited islands, so the reef and the channel edges see nothing like the traffic of North and South Male’. Fish here are less educated and run larger on average. Underwater visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres.
What you give up is choice. The capital has dozens of boats and you can be fishing tomorrow. Here there are few, and if the one you wanted is out, there’sn’t a queue of alternatives behind it. That’s the honest exchange: better water, less flexibility.

Everything runs from the island harbour, which is a working fishing harbour rather than a tourist jetty. Fishing has been the island’s livelihood far longer than tourism has.

This is the detail that makes Kudahuvadhoo work when other southern islands don’t, and almost nobody explains it.
Dhaalu Airport is a wheeled-aircraft airport with a runway of about 1,200 metres, served by Maldivian and Manta Air from Velana. Unlike seaplanes, which fly in daylight only and stop for the day around 16:00, fixed-wing domestic flights can operate after dark.
So a late international arrival into Male’ doesn’t automatically cost you a night in a transit hotel. You can land in the evening and still connect onward the same day, which isn’t true of most seaplane-served atolls.
An evening domestic connection puts you on the island overnight and on the water at first light. On a short trip that’s a full extra fishing day compared with a seaplane destination.
Domestic services to Dhaalu don’t run at the same frequency every day and are subject to weather. Confirm the actual flights for your dates before you fix the fishing days around them.
Don’t take the ferry to save money. The public ferry from Male’ takes roughly twelve hours. A private speedboat is about five. Neither is a sensible use of a fishing trip, and on a week’s holiday the ferry costs you two days of it. Fly.
Worth knowing before you book, because it catches people out.
Fushi Kandu is the only marine protected area in Dhaalu Atoll, built around soft-coral thilas rising from around 30 to 40 metres. Fishing is prohibited inside marine protected areas under Regulation R-75/2020, which sets out prohibited activities including fishing in protected areas. It’s a dive site, not a fishing mark, and any legitimate skipper will already know that.
The wider rules apply here as everywhere in the country. The licence travels with the boat and its captain rather than with you, under the Fisheries Act 14/2019. Spearfishing is banned nationwide with no tourist exemption. Protected species must go back: all sharks, rays, turtles, whales and dolphins, Napoleon wrasse, puffer fish, eels, giant clams, all corals, and parrotfish, which is the one that surprises people because it looks like dinner.
Within three miles of a Ministry-placed fish aggregating device, only traditional pole and line is permitted. Lagoon fishing is governed by the island council, so local rules sit on top of the national ones and vary island to island.

Dhaalu has an island called Maafushi. It’s not the Maafushi you’ve read about. The guesthouse island everyone means is in South Male’ Atoll, an hour by speedboat from the capital. Dhaalu’s Maafushi is a private resort island joined to Kedhigandu by an 800 metre footbridge. Booking a guesthouse on one and a flight to the other is a genuinely expensive mistake, and it happens.
If you actually want the busy guesthouse island with dozens of boats and competitive pricing, that’s Maafushi fishing charters in South Male’ Atoll, and it’s a completely different trip from this one.
Two more things worth knowing about the atoll. Rinbudhoo, a short hop from Kudahuvadhoo, is the traditional gold and silver jewellery island and has been for generations. And Kudahuvadhoo itself holds one of the finest coral-stone mosques in the country, along with hawittas, the mounded ruins of Buddhist temples predating the tenth century. If somebody in your group doesn’t fish, the island isn’t short of things to do.
The same two monsoons drive the year here as everywhere in the Maldives. Northeast runs November to April, calmer and drier, with the strongest big game fishing. Southwest runs May to October, wetter and rougher offshore, and it’s when giant trevally fishing peaks.

Two things specific to a trip out here.
A domestic return from Velana is a real line item and it applies to every person travelling, not per boat. Factor it in before comparing a Dhaalu trip with a charter from the capital, where there’s no flight at all.
TGST has been 17% since July 2025. Guesthouse accommodation on an inhabited island also carries green tax at the lower guesthouse rate rather than the resort rate. Ask whether a quoted charter rate is inclusive before you compare it with anything else.
Kudahuvadhoo is the administrative and commercial hub of Dhaalu, so it has more than most local islands: shops, a bank, a health centre, restaurants, and the airport itself. Several guesthouses and small hotels operate here, some of them a few hundred metres from the runway.
It’s an inhabited island, which shapes the trip in ways worth knowing in advance. No alcohol is sold or served anywhere on inhabited islands in the Maldives, swimwear is for the designated bikini beach rather than the village, and the rhythm of the place follows prayer times and the fishing fleet rather than a resort schedule.

The honest version. This is a small island with a small number of boats. If the weather closes in, or the one suitable boat is already booked, there’s no queue of alternatives the way there’s in the capital. You’ve also paid for flights to get here. A cancelled day costs more in Dhaalu than it does in Male’.
Come here when you’ve time and you want quieter water. Three nights or more, flexible fishing days, and a tolerance for the schedule moving with the weather.
Go elsewhere if you’re on a tight stopover or want to fish tomorrow. Hulhumale’ fishing charters and Male’ fishing charters both put you on the water within minutes of the airport with far more boats to choose from.
And if the fishing itself is the entire point of the trip, the far south still beats the middle. Huvadhoo and Laamu hold the least pressured fish in the country, or a liveaboard fishing package can move with the weather instead of waiting it out.

Fishing is carried out under the boat’s own licence, which travels with the vessel and its captain, issued under the Fisheries Act 14/2019, so the responsibility sits with the boat rather than with you. What matters practically is confirming that the boat you board holds a valid one, which is one of the things booking through a licensed agency handles for you.
No. Kudahuvadhoo is an inhabited island, and alcohol isn’t sold or served on inhabited islands anywhere in the Maldives, which includes boats operating from them. Swimwear is also for the designated bikini beach rather than the village. If those things matter to your trip, a resort stay or a licensed liveaboard is the alternative and we can arrange either.
Three nights minimum, and more is better. You’re flying to get here, boats are few, and weather can take a day out of a short trip with no easy way to replace it. With three or four nights you’ve room to move a fishing day rather than lose it. For a one or two night trip, fish from the capital instead, where there are far more boats and no flight to build around.
