    About the trip builder

How the Maldives fishing trip builder works

The builder above walks through the details our Malé-based team needs to put together your quote: where you want to fish, how many days, what you are targeting, group size, dates, accommodation, vessel and budget. Most trips take 8 to 10 minutes to design. We come back within 24 hours with confirmed availability and exact pricing.

What you should know: the Maldives has 26 atolls spanning 871 km of ocean, with more than 1,100 fish species across the archipelago. Vessel availability, productive grounds and accommodation options vary considerably by atoll and season. The builder narrows the choices to what actually fits your dates, group and target species, so the trip plan our team designs for you is specific to your goals, not generic.

    Where to fish

Top atolls for sport fishing in the Maldives

Every atoll fishes differently. The right choice depends on what you are after, when you are travelling, and how much time you have. A few stand out for serious anglers:

    South Atoll · Anchor zone

    Huvadhoo (Gaafu Dhaalu)

Premier grounds for dogtooth tuna and giant trevally. Less pressured than the central atolls, with deep channels and productive seamounts. Year-round option for serious anglers.

    South Atoll

    Laamu Atoll

Eastern reef walls, remote channel mouths, classic southern GT grounds with limited boat traffic. Strong choice for week-long single-focus fishing trips.

    Equatorial

    Fuvahmulah

Standalone equatorial island known for tiger sharks, big-game tuna and pelagic species. Compact island, intense fishing focus.

    Central Atoll

    Vaavu Atoll

Strong channel fishing for GT, dogtooth and trevally. Easier access from Malé than far-southern atolls. Popular for popping and jigging trips.

    Central Atoll

    South Ari

Productive for mahi mahi, wahoo and yellowfin tuna. Whale shark zone for non-fishing companions. Strong resort options for fishing-plus-leisure trips.

    North Central

    Kaafu (North Malé)

Easiest atoll to access from Malé and Velana airport. Good for day trips and shorter add-ons to a resort stay. Faster to organise on short notice.

Not sure? Pick "Suggest the best for me" at Step 1 of the builder. We will match your atoll to your targets, dates and budget. For broader context, see our Maldives sport fishing guide.

    When to fish

    Best seasons by target species

Maldives fishing runs year-round, but the two monsoon seasons favour different species and techniques.

    Season Months Best for Conditions
Northeast monsoon Nov to Apr Marlin, sailfish, yellowfin, wahoo, big-game trolling Dry, calmer eastern waters, peak visibility
Southwest monsoon May to Oct GT, dogtooth tuna, popping, jigging Wetter, calmer western waters, productive channels
Shoulder months Apr to May, Oct to Nov Mixed targets, lighter crowds, pricing Transitional, conditions vary by week

Catch-and-release is standard for giant trevally, dogtooth tuna, marlin and sailfish. Pelagic species like wahoo, mahi mahi and yellowfin tuna are typically retained for galley use. For the full GT fishing breakdown and the Maldives fly fishing guide, see the dedicated pages.

Catches vary by season, conditions, and angler experience. Photos and statistics reference past trips; no specific catch is guaranteed.

    Frequent questions

    Maldives fishing questions answered

Is catch-and-release mandatory in the Maldives?

Yes for several species. Giant trevally, dogtooth tuna, and most billfish (marlin, sailfish) are released as standard practice on every sport fishing trip we plan. Sharks and rays are protected and must be released. Pelagic species like wahoo, mahi mahi and yellowfin tuna are typically retained.

Can I bring my own rods and reels?

Yes, and most serious anglers do. Maldives customs allows personal fishing gear without duty. We coordinate the arrival paperwork to avoid delays. Travel rods (4-piece) clear customs faster than full-length rods.

Vessels also carry their own gear suited to local techniques. If you are flying light, just tell us at the inquiry stage and we will confirm what is onboard.

What is the difference between a resort fishing add-on and a guesthouse-based trip?

Resort plus fishing: You stay at a luxury resort and day-trip out to fish. Better for mixed-interest groups (anglers plus non-anglers), shorter fishing days, premium accommodation experience.

Local-island guesthouse: You stay on an inhabited local island close to the fishing grounds. Earlier dawn departures, longer fishing days, more authentic local-island experience, considerably lower cost.

Serious anglers usually pick the guesthouse option because it is closer to the water and gives more fishing time. Couples or families with non-fishing companions often pick the resort bundle.

How many fishing days should I book?

The sweet spot is 5 to 7 days. Anything less and weather variability can compress your productive window. Anything more and most anglers want a rest day mid-trip.

If you are combining fishing with a resort stay, 3 to 4 fishing days plus 3 to 4 leisure days is a typical balance for couples and families.

What taxes and fees are extra?

Maldives applies a 17% Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST), effective 1 July 2025, on accommodation, charter services and most other tourist services. A Green Tax of USD 12 per person per night applies at resorts and tourist vessels including liveaboards; USD 6 per person per night at small inhabited-island guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer. Children under two are exempt.

These taxes are not included in the budget range you select in the builder. They are confirmed in the final quote.

Do I need a fishing licence?

No individual licence is required for recreational sport fishing in the Maldives. The vessel operates under a Ministry of Fisheries permit which covers your trip. Spearfishing is prohibited for tourists.

What if the vessel breaks down or weather forces a cancellation?

Our fleet is rotational. If the assigned vessel has mechanical issues, we substitute a similar-tier boat. If weather causes a same-day cancellation, the fishing day is rescheduled within your trip dates where possible, or refunded pro-rata if rescheduling is not feasible.
