Luxury Surf Holidays in the Maldives

For a luxury surf holiday in the Maldives, stay at a resort a short boat ride from good reef breaks, with its own surf guides. Our top picks are Four Seasons Kuda Huraa and Gili Lankanfushi for the North MalΓ© breaks, Six Senses Laamu for Yin Yang, COMO Maalifushi for the quiet waves of Thaa, and NIYAMA Private Islands for a left-hander off the beach. The season runs from about March to October, with the biggest swells from June to September.

How a luxury surf holiday works in the Maldives

Almost every wave in the Maldives breaks over a coral reef at the edge of an atoll, usually a short boat ride from the nearest island. So the question is not just which resort is nicest, but which breaks it can reach, how often its boat goes out and who guides you.

The best surf resorts run guided boat sessions at the right tide, with a surf guide who knows when each break is working. Some sell surf passes for a set number of sessions, and a few have a wave right off the beach. You choose the villa; the surf team chooses the break each morning.

Reef breaks are shallow, so reef boots, a rash vest and plenty of reef-safe sun cream are worth packing. Boards are available to hire at the surf resorts, though many keen surfers bring their own.

Resort or surf charter?

Choose a surf resort if

  • You are travelling with a partner or family who do not surf.
  • You want a villa, a pool, a spa and a choice of restaurants.
  • You are learning or improving and want lessons.
  • You surf once or twice a day and relax the rest.

Choose a surf charter if

  • Everyone in the group surfs and wants as many waves as possible.
  • You want to follow the swell between breaks and atolls.
  • You are happy with a cabin rather than a villa.
  • You want to reach the southern atolls in season.

Many of our guests do both: a week on a surf boat, then a few nights at a resort. See our surf charter and liveaboard guide and our private yacht charter guide.

Surfing without the swell

Flat day, or a non-surfer who wants to try? Several luxury resorts have ways to ride a wave without the reef.

Luxury surf holidays: your questions answered

Which is the best luxury surf resort in the Maldives?

For most people, Four Seasons Kuda Huraa, with its own surf school and boat trips to the North MalΓ© breaks. For quieter waves, Six Senses Laamu and COMO Maalifushi. For a wave you can paddle out to from the beach, NIYAMA Private Islands.

When is the surf season in the Maldives?

Roughly March to October, during the south-west monsoon. The biggest swells usually come from June to September, while April, May and October tend to bring lighter winds and cleaner waves. The southern atolls also work from February to April and September to November.

Can beginners surf in the Maldives?

Yes, with the right resort and month. The waves break over reef, so lessons with a guide matter. Four Seasons Kuda Huraa, Six Senses Laamu and COMO Maalifushi all offer lessons, and April, May and October usually bring smaller, cleaner waves.

Are the surf breaks crowded?

The North MalΓ© breaks can be busy in peak season, especially when surf boats arrive. Laamu, Thaa and Dhaalu are far quieter. Some breaks are reserved for one resort’s guests, such as Pasta Point at Cinnamon Dhonveli.

Is surfing included at luxury resorts?

Usually not. Most resorts charge for guided sessions, boat trips to the breaks and board hire, often as surf passes. We list the surf costs in your quote so there are no surprises.

Is a surf charter better than a resort?

A charter boat lets you follow the swell and surf more breaks, and suits keen surfers. A resort is better if you are travelling with non-surfers or want space, a spa and a beach. Many people do both. See our surf charter guide.

What is there for non-surfers on a surf holiday?

Plenty. Snorkelling, diving, spa days, dolphin cruises and sandbank picnics, plus wakesurfing, jetsurfing and the surf simulator at Cheval Blanc Randheli for anyone who wants to try riding a wave without the reef.

How much does a luxury surf holiday in the Maldives cost?

It depends on the resort, villa, season, length of stay and how much surfing you book, so we do not publish live rates. Tell us your dates and level, and we will send a written quote with surf trips, transfers and taxes.
