A surf honeymoon in the Maldives is one of the best trip ideas you’ll ever have — but only if both of you come home happy. That means the surfer gets enough waves without the non-surfer feeling abandoned, and the romance doesn’t get swallowed by a “surf trip with a fancy room.”
This guide covers how to plan a Maldives honeymoon where one (or both) of you surfs — the right resorts, the split-stay template that works, realistic costs, and sample itineraries that balance waves with overwater villas, sunset dinners, and spa recovery.
Yes — and the Maldives is genuinely one of the best places to do it. Here’s why it works, and why it sometimes doesn’t.
Surf sessions are short. Most guided sessions run 2–4 hours. You’re back for lunch, not gone all day.
Non-surfers have incredible options. The Maldives isn’t Bali or Mentawais — there’s world-class snorkeling, spa, fine dining, and genuine island luxury for the partner who stays behind.
The distances are small. Surf breaks are usually 5–20 minutes by boat from the resort. You’re not driving two hours each way.
Split-stays are easy. You can do a few days of intense surfing (charter or surf-focused resort) and then shift to a pure luxury resort for romance. The logistics are simple.
Making it a “surf trip with a nice hotel.” If you surf every dawn and dusk for 10 days, your partner will feel like an afterthought. Set boundaries.
Choosing a surf-only base. A 10-day charter boat isn’t a honeymoon for the non-surfing partner. Neither is a guesthouse on Thulusdhoo.
Not discussing expectations. Before you book, agree on: how many surf sessions per week, how many “together” days, and what the non-surfer wants to do. This one conversation prevents most problems.
Booking peak surf season for romance. June–August has the best waves but also more rain and a grittier travel vibe. Shoulder months are better for a honeymoon.
Plan the honeymoon first, then add the surfing. Not the other way around. If you start with “where’s the best surf?”, you’ll end up with a surf trip that has some romantic moments. If you start with “where’s the best honeymoon?”, you’ll end up with a honeymoon that has some incredible surf. The second version makes both people happy.
The right format depends on whether one or both of you surfs, and how important the surf is compared to the honeymoon.
How it works: Stay at one luxury resort for 7–10 nights. The surfer does 3–5 guided sessions during the trip. The rest of the time is couple’s time — spa, dining, excursions.
Best when: Surf is a “nice bonus” not the main event. The non-surfer wants a consistent resort experience. You don’t want to move between bases.
Budget: $10,000–$25,000+ per couple for 7 nights.
Perfect for: Couples where one partner surfs occasionally.
How it works: 4–5 nights on a surf charter or surf-focused resort, then 3–5 nights at a luxury resort for pure romance and recovery.
Best when: The surfer wants proper surf time AND the couple wants proper honeymoon time. The most popular format for surf honeymooners.
Budget: $12,000–$25,000+ per couple for 8–10 nights.
Perfect for: Dedicated surfers with non-surfing (or beginner) partners.
How it works: Stay at a surf resort where both of you surf. Plan sessions together, matched to the weaker surfer’s level. Coaching available. Mix surf days with non-surf adventures.
Best when: You both love surfing and want to share the experience. The Maldives’ warm water and coaching options make this work even if one partner is a beginner.
Budget: $10,000–$20,000+ per couple for 7 nights.
Perfect for: Surf couples who met in the water.
This is the format we recommend most. It gives the surfer their fill in the first phase, then shifts to pure romance in the second. Both partners get exactly what they want, and the trip has a natural arc — adventure to relaxation.
4–5 nights
Charter boat or surf-forward resort. The surfer gets 2–3 sessions per day. The non-surfer enjoys snorkeling, island visits, fishing, or resort spa. This is the “get it out of your system” phase.
3–5 nights
Luxury resort. Overwater villa, private pool, sunset dinners, spa couples treatment. Maybe one casual morning surf if conditions are perfect — but no pressure. This is the honeymoon.
| Phase 1 (surf) | Phase 2 (romance) | Total nights | Budget per couple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four Seasons Explorer yacht | Four Seasons Kuda Huraa | 8–10 | $15,000–$25,000+ |
| Mid-range charter (Carpe Diem) | Six Senses Laamu | 10–12 | $12,000–$20,000+ |
| Cinnamon Dhonveli (Pasta Point) | COMO Maalifushi | 8–10 | $10,000–$18,000+ |
| Holiday Inn Kandooma | Niyama Private Islands | 7–10 | $8,000–$15,000+ |
These resorts work for honeymooners because they balance genuine surf access with the romance, privacy, and luxury a honeymoon deserves. Each one handles the “one surfs, one doesn’t” dynamic well.
The gold standard. Tropicsurf runs a professional programme while your partner enjoys the full Four Seasons spa, beach, and dining experience. Combines seamlessly with the Four Seasons Explorer yacht for a split-stay. 30-minute speedboat from the airport — no seaplane stress.
View resortThe most romantic surf resort in the Maldives. Virtually empty lineups (only resort in the atoll), genuine seclusion, and Six Senses-level wellness. Yin Yangs — a world-class right — is 5 minutes by boat. The non-surfer gets one of the best spa experiences in the Maldives.
View resortOuter atoll adventure meets COMO Shambhala wellness. Access to 20+ breaks across three atolls for the surfer. The non-surfer gets a world-class wellness programme, fine dining, and genuine remoteness. Perfect for couples who want something different.
View resortOnly 20 houses, each with private pool and dedicated butler. Access to South Malé breaks by boat. For couples who want the most private, intimate honeymoon possible — with the option to sneak out for a surf session when the tide is right.

This itinerary uses the split-stay format: 4 nights surf-focused, then 5 nights pure romance. Adjust based on your surf appetite and budget.
Arrive Malé, transfer to surf resort (e.g., Four Seasons Kuda Huraa). Settle into your room. If conditions allow, the surfer does a late afternoon session while the partner explores the island and spa. Dinner together — first Maldivian sunset.
Surfer: guided morning session at Sultans or Ninjas (2–3 hours, back by lunch). Partner: spa treatment or lagoon snorkeling. Afternoon: couple’s excursion — sunset dolphin cruise or sandbank visit. Dinner at the overwater restaurant.
Surfer: morning and afternoon sessions (Chickens, Honky’s, or wherever conditions are best). Partner: full spa day, paddleboarding, or a private island picnic. Meet for sunset cocktails and dinner. This is the day the surfer earns their waves.
Short morning session. Then a full afternoon together — snorkeling the house reef, lagoon swim, or just lying on the beach doing nothing. Pack light for the resort transfer tomorrow. Farewell dinner at the surf base.
Speedboat or seaplane transfer to your romance resort (e.g., Six Senses Laamu). Check into your overwater villa. Private pool, champagne on arrival. No alarms, no surf plans. Just… arrive and breathe.
Couples spa treatment in the morning. Afternoon: explore the island on bikes, snorkel the house reef together, or kayak through the lagoon. Sunset dinner — just the two of you, feet in the sand.
Dolphin watching, sandbank picnic, or a private snorkeling trip. If the surfer is itching, one casual morning session — but only if the partner is genuinely happy relaxing. This day is about shared experiences.
No plans. Sleep late, order room service, swim in your private pool, read books, nap. Maybe a sunset cruise if you feel like it. This is the day you’ll remember as the one where you did “nothing” and it was perfect.
Final lagoon swim. Pack up slowly. Transfer to Malé for your flight home. If your flight is late, use the extra hours for a last lunch at the resort, not a last-minute surf session. End the honeymoon as a couple, not a surfer.

Here are realistic ranges per couple for the three formats. These include accommodation, transfers, meals, and surf — but not international flights.
| Format | Duration | Budget per couple | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury resort + surf | 7 nights | $10,000 – $25,000+ | Overwater villa, 3–5 surf sessions, spa, meals, transfers |
| Split-stay (charter + resort) | 8–10 nights | $12,000 – $25,000+ | 4–5 nights charter + 3–5 nights luxury resort, all-inclusive |
| Split-stay (resort + resort) | 8–10 nights | $10,000 – $20,000+ | Surf resort + romance resort, transfers between |
| Both surf — luxury base | 7 nights | $10,000 – $20,000+ | Overwater villa, surf coaching for both, meals, transfers |
Travel in shoulder season (April, September–October) — resort rates drop 20–30%. Choose speedboat resorts (Kuda Huraa, Kandooma) over seaplane resorts — save $500–$1,200 in transfers. Bundle the surf programme with accommodation if the resort offers it. Book the romance resort through us — we often get honeymoon extras (champagne, spa credits, room upgrades) that direct booking doesn’t include.
Timing a surf honeymoon is about balancing waves, weather, and romance. Peak surf season (June–August) has the most consistent swells but also more rain and a less “honeymoon” atmosphere. Shoulder months deliver the best of both worlds.
March–April: Clean surf conditions, beautiful weather, romantic travel vibe. Easier for beginners too. Slightly higher resort prices but worth it for the overall experience.
September–October: Good surf still active, crowd relief, often better value. The “secret season” for couples who want waves and romance without the peak-season intensity.
June–August: Peak swell, most consistent waves. But also more rain, occasional stormy spells, and a grittier travel vibe. Choose this only if both of you are committed surfers and the surf is the main event.
May: A sweet spot — swell energy picks up, prices haven’t peaked, conditions are often beautiful.
