Yes, you can charter a private yacht in the Maldives, from a few hours on a resortβs own motor yacht to a week or more on a crewed yacht through the atolls. The best time is November to April, when the seas are calmest and the water clearest. Most multi-night charters start in MalΓ© or at a resort jetty, and many people pair a few nights at sea with a resort stay.
The Maldives has no big charter marinas like the Mediterranean or the Caribbean. Most private yacht time happens in one of these three ways, and the right one depends on how long you want at sea and how many of you are going.
Book by the hour, the half day or the full day through the resort you are staying at. Ideal for a sunset cruise, a sandbank lunch, snorkelling a distant reef or arriving by yacht instead of speedboat. A few resort yachts have cabins for an overnight trip.
Best for: couples, families and short stays
A captain, chef and crew take you through the atolls while you sleep on board. Most trips run three to ten nights from MalΓ© or a resort jetty, and many people add a resort stay before or after. Most charter yachts carry no more than 12 guests overnight.
Best for: groups, celebrations and divers
Bringing a yacht in needs a local agent, a cruising permit and clearance on arrival. Berths for large yachts are few, so most anchor in sheltered lagoons and use a tender to reach islands.
Best for: owners and long-range charters
These luxury resorts keep their own yachts for guests. It is the easiest way to spend a day, or sometimes a night, at sea without organising a separate charter.
| Resort | Atoll | Yacht | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Nautilus | Baa | Tranquility (Princess 64), Nautilus One (Princess 54, up to ten guests) and Nautilus V (Riviera 42) | Chef-led cruises, wine tasting, big-game fishing and an overnight trip for whale sharks and mantas |
| Soneva Fushi | Baa | Soneva in Aqua, a 23 m motor-sailer with two cabins and a crew of six | From a day cruise to four nights at sea, with a wellness therapist on board |
| Four Seasons Voavah | Baa | Voavah Summer, a 62 ft yacht that comes with the island | Reef and Hanifaru Bay trips for whoever has the island |
| Velaa Private Island | Noonu | Ameera and Rania | Private cruises, picnics and island hopping |
| JOALI Maldives | Raa | Motor yacht with a salon and cabins below deck | Day cruises, sandbank lunches and snorkelling |
| Kudadoo | Lhaviyani | Luxury motor yacht | Longer excursions away from the island |
| The Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands | North MalΓ© | Luxury motor yacht, with Fari Marina next door | Day cruises and yacht arrivals close to the airport |
| Coco PrivΓ© Kuda Hithi | North MalΓ© | Private motor yacht for island guests | Cruises for whoever has the island |
| W Maldives | North Ari | Escape | Private sunset and snorkelling cruises |

Staying somewhere else? Most luxury resorts can arrange a private yacht for the day even if they do not own one. Read our private island guide for the islands that come with their own boats.
A good charter day starts with breakfast at anchor in a lagoon, a swim off the back of the boat and a short cruise to a reef or sandbank before the heat of the day. Lunch is on board or on the sand, and the afternoon is for snorkelling, paddle boards or a nap in the shade. Sunset is the moment to be moving, with drinks on the top deck.
On larger yachts you get an air-conditioned salon, en-suite cabins and a chef who shops for fresh fish along the way. Ask how many cabins have their own bathroom, whether the generator runs all night for air conditioning, and how much shade there is on deck. Those three things make more difference than the length of the yacht.

The boat shapes the whole trip. Motor yachts cover distance fastest, catamarans give you the most deck, and safari boats suit divers and bigger groups.
| Type | Best for | On board | Speed | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Motor yacht | Covering distance in comfort | Air-conditioned salon and cabins, shaded decks | Fast between atolls | More motion at anchor; ask about engine hours in the price |
| Sailing catamaran | Families and sandbank days | Wide decks and a trampoline net, very stable | Slower; sails when the wind allows | Smaller cabins; less shade on deck |
| Luxury safari boat | Divers and larger groups | More cabins, a dive deck and often a separate dive dhoni | Steady, built for week-long trips | Less private; finish varies a lot from boat to boat |
| Superyacht (30 m and over) | Big celebrations and owners | Several decks, toys, tenders and a large crew | Long range | Permits, agent and anchoring rules; berths are scarce |

Distances between atolls are longer than they look on a map, so the number of nights decides the route. These are the four we suggest most.

Manta cleaning stations, reef sharks and South Ariβs whale sharks, which are seen through the year. The classic route for people who want marine life above all.
A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. From around June to November, mantas gather to feed at Hanifaru Bay, where only snorkelling is allowed and visits are limited.
Fewer resorts, wide channels with reef sharks and eagle rays, and empty anchorages. Best for confident snorkellers and divers.
Protected areas such as Hanifaru Bay have their own rules on boats, numbers and time in the water. Your crew and our team plan around them, so you do not miss the best of it.
Month by month, see our weather and season checker and our manta ray guide for the best months to see them.

Two quotes for the same yacht can look very different. Check that each one covers these six things, in writing, before you compare them:
Most of our yacht guests spend part of the trip at sea and the rest on an island. A few nights on board, then four to seven at a resort, gives you both the freedom of the boat and the space of a villa. Some resorts make it simple: Soneva in Aqua sails from Soneva Fushi, The Nautilus runs its cruises from the island, and at Voavah the yacht comes with the house.
Close to the airport, The Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands sits beside Fari Marina, which has berths for visiting yachts. Further out, Kudadoo and JOALI use their yachts for longer days away. If you want the whole island and its boats to yourselves, look at a private island buyout.

Yes. You can hire a resortβs own yacht by the hour or the day, book a crewed yacht for several nights through the atolls, or bring a yacht in with a local agent and a cruising permit. Most multi-night charters start in MalΓ© or at a resort jetty.
November to April, during the north-east monsoon, when the seas are calmer and the water clearest. December to March is the busiest time, so book early for Christmas and New Year. May to October brings more wind and rain showers, but it is also manta season in Baa Atoll.
It depends on the yacht. Day trips often take more guests than overnight trips, and most charter yachts carry no more than 12 guests overnight. Larger groups can use two yachts or a safari boat with more cabins.
Yes, on a yacht with proper cabins. Soneva in Aqua at Soneva Fushi stays out for up to four nights, and The Nautilus runs an overnight trip in Baa Atoll. Crewed charters through the atolls are built around sleeping on board.
Not if you charter a crewed yacht that is licensed in the Maldives: the operator handles permits. If you bring your own yacht, you need a local agent, a cruising permit and clearance on arrival, and anchoring is restricted in some lagoons and protected areas.
Sometimes. Each resort sets its own rules for visiting yachts. Some welcome guests for lunch, the spa or dinner by arrangement, and some do not allow visits at all. We book any visits before you sail.
Yes, with the right boat. Sailing catamarans are stable, roomy and reach shallow sandbanks, and most crews carry childrenβs life jackets. Check cabin layouts and deck rails before you book with young children.
It depends on the yacht, the number of nights, the route, the season and what is included, so we do not publish live rates. Tell us your dates and group, and we will send a written quote with every inclusion listed.
Send your dates, group size and what you would like to do at sea. We will come back with the yachts that fit, a suggested route and a full written quote, with or without a resort stay.
