Komandoo runs three fishing formats in Lhaviyani Atoll: big game trolling, night hand line fishing, and a traditional dhoni trip that leaves before sunrise. It’s a small adults-only island of 65 villas taking guests aged 18 and over, the strictest age rule of the three Lhaviyani resorts that publish a fishing programme.
The thing to sort out before you book is timing, not tackle. The big game and night trips run on a set weekly schedule rather than on request. On a short stay that means your fishing day can fall outside your trip entirely, which is a booking problem, not a holiday problem, and it’s fixable only in advance.
Most resort fishing pages treat the location as scenery. Here it isn’t.
Lhaviyani is where the Maldivian commercial tuna fishery lives. Felivaru has hosted the country’s tuna cannery since the late 1970s. Naifaru, the atoll capital, and Hinnavaru next door are working fishing islands where the boats still go out daily. The skippers who take guests out from the resorts grew up on this water, and many of them fished it commercially first.
That matters for two reasons. The obvious one is competence. The less obvious one is that the Maldivian tuna fishery is pole and line, one fish at a time, with no nets. When a crew hands you a hand line and shows you how to work it by feel, that isn’t a heritage demonstration staged for guests. It’s a scaled-down version of how the fish in the cannery a few miles away were actually caught.
Komandoo publishes a half day excursion to Naifaru, taking in the island’s hospital, school, mosque and turtle sanctuary. If seeing the commercial side matters to you, ask what the current itinerary covers when you book, because the published description doesn’t name the cannery and these trips change.
No other resort in our fishing resort comparison puts guests this close to a working commercial fishery. It’s the strongest thing about fishing at Komandoo and almost nobody writes about it.
Komandoo runs its big game and night hand line trips on a set weekly schedule. Not on request, not daily, not whenever four people want to go.
Think about what that does to a short stay. Book four nights on an adults-only island and you have three full days. If the big game slot falls on the day you arrive, you’re on a seaplane. If it falls the day you leave, you’re packing. It’s entirely possible to book a fishing holiday at Komandoo and never get a fishing day, and you would only find out at the tour desk on arrival.
Sort the fishing before you fix the flights. Ask which days the big game and night trips run in your travel window, then build the dates around them. This is the single most useful thing you can do for a fishing trip here, and it costs nothing except asking the question in the right order.
The pre-sunrise dhoni is the exception worth knowing about. Traditional dhoni fishing is the one format that tends to run most often, so if the scheduled trips don’t line up, that’s usually still available. It’s also the best fishing of the day, which is the whole reason it leaves in the dark.

The dawn departure is the one worth getting up for, and as far as we can find it’s the only published pre-sunrise fishing departure at any resort in the country. Reef fish feed hardest in the first light, before the water warms and the boat traffic starts. Every crew in the Maldives knows this. Very few resorts are willing to run a trip that requires waking guests at four in the morning.
If you’ve never hand lined, don’t let it put you off. There’s no casting technique to learn and no reel to master. You drop a weighted line, feel for the take through your fingers, and haul. Three Lhaviyani resorts publish a real fishing programme, and they sort themselves neatly by who’s allowed on the boat.

Komandoo is the smallest of the three at 65 villas, against Hurawalhi’s 90 and Kuredu’s 387. On a fishing trip that’s a genuine difference rather than a marketing one. On a small island the same crew takes you out repeatedly, and by the third trip they know what you can do and where you want to go.
What Komandoo can’t offer is choice of boat. Independent charter supply in the northern atolls is thin, which is why we say Lhaviyani works better as a fishing stay than a fishing base. Two routes, and Komandoo is one of the resorts where that flexibility is real. Seaplane from Velana International Airport takes around 40 minutes but flies in daylight only. The alternative is a domestic flight to Madivaru followed by a speedboat, which is not bound by daylight, so a late international arrival can still reach the island the same night.
For an angler that’s worth money. A late arrival on the seaplane route costs you a night near the airport and, on a short stay, quite possibly your only scheduled fishing day. Confirm which transfer your booking is on rather than assuming, because it changes what your first morning looks like.
Big game peaks from November to March on the north east monsoon, when wahoo and sailfish run strongest and the seas are calmest for the trip out past the atoll rim. Reef and hand line fishing runs all year, which is why the dawn dhoni and the night trips hold up through the rougher south west monsoon from May to October. One rule that bears on this page: under the Fisheries Act 14/2019 the fishing licence sits with the boat and its captain rather than with you, so no personal permit is needed for any of these trips.
