Luxury Resorts in Ari Atoll: The 5 Best, and Whale Sharks All Year

The best luxury resorts in Ari Atoll are W Maldives, Kandolhu and Constance Halaveli in North Ari, and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island and Constance Moofushi in South Ari. All five are 20 to 30 minutes from MalΓ© by seaplane. South Ari is one of the few places on earth where you can swim with whale sharks in any month, and Conrad sits right at the start of their protected reef.

Two atolls in one

North Ari or South Ari?

Ari is usually treated as one destination, but it is really two administrative atolls, Alifu Alifu in the north and Alifu Dhaalu in the south, each with its own character.

North Ari first, then South Ari. Each card ends with what is under the water, because in Ari that is usually the reason to come.

North Ari Atoll

1Best for a lively, social stay

W Maldives

North Ari Atoll

W has been the Maldives’ party-friendly luxury island since 2005, and it still has the most energy of any resort in Ari. Fesdu island is shaped like a heart, the villas are bright and playful, and the Whatever/Whenever team will set up almost anything at any hour, from a private DJ set to breakfast on a sandbank.

Food is casual and shareable: FISH for ocean-to-table cooking, SIP for Nikkei dishes and Latin cocktails, FIRE for beach barbecue, and WET by the pool. Gaathafushi, the resort’s own castaway island, is two minutes away by boat for picnics and private dinners.

Skip it if you want a quiet, traditional island. W is lively and modern by design.

2Best tiny island

Kandolhu Maldives

North Ari Atoll

Kandolhu is the smallest island on this page, with just 30 villas, and you can walk around it in a few minutes. That is the point: it feels personal, quiet and very easy, with a house reef close to the beach and staff who know your name by the second day.

Most guests take the Ultimate Inclusions plan, which covers breakfast, lunch and dinner at five intimate Γ  la carte restaurants, more than 30 wines, premium spirits and cocktails, and a private snorkelling tour or a champagne sunset cruise. It is one of the best-value luxury stays in Ari.

Skip it if you are travelling with young children. Kandolhu is tiny and suits adults best.

3Best for families in North Ari

Constance Halaveli

North Ari Atoll

Every one of Halaveli’s 87 villas has its own plunge pool, which is unusual at this level. The island is shaped like a dhoni boat, the 37 water villas have 100 sqm sundecks, and families can choose villas with a separate children’s room or the 700 sqm Presidential Beach Villa.

Dinner moves between Jahaz, Jing for Asian food and the Kaika sushi bar, with a proper wine cellar behind it. The Constance Spa stands on stilts over the lagoon, and sister resort Constance Moofushi is in South Ari if you want to combine two islands.

Skip it if you want the lowest price. Pools come as standard, so Halaveli costs more than Moofushi.

South Ari Atoll

4Best for whale sharks and undersea dining

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

South Ari Atoll

Conrad is really two resorts in one: two natural islands joined by a 500-metre bridge. Rangali-Finolhu is the family island and social hub, with the Kids’ and Teens’ clubs, while Rangali is quieter, with adults-exclusive spaces and the water villas. There are 12 restaurants and bars and two spas between them.

The headline acts are underwater. Ithaa, the glass-domed undersea restaurant, sits five metres below the surface, and The Muraka residence has a master bedroom under the sea, about 16 feet down. Of our five, it is the best placed for South Ari’s whale sharks.

Skip it if you want a small, intimate island. With 151 villas across two islands, Conrad is big and busy.

5Best all-inclusive for divers

Constance Moofushi

South Ari Atoll

Moofushi is all-inclusive only, so the price you are quoted covers almost everything: meals at the Manta restaurant, a dinner at the AlizΓ©e beach grill, selected drinks with a 125-reference wine list, a minibar restocked daily and boat excursions. The style is barefoot and easy, with thatched villas and sand underfoot.

The water villas stand in a long line over the reef, and the beach villas sit just behind the sand. There are no private pools, but the lagoon and the reef more than make up for it and the dive centre takes guests to dozens of sites nearby.

Skip it if you want a private pool. Moofushi’s villas do not have them.

Whale sharks

Swimming with whale sharks in South Ari

The South Ari Marine Protected Area, or SAMPA, was declared in 2009 and runs for about 42 km along the outer reef, from the tip of Rangali island to Dhigurah. It is a globally important feeding ground, and whale sharks are seen here in every month of the year. Most are males: about 80 per cent, according to the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme.

Trips leave from the resorts and from Dhigurah, and you snorkel rather than dive, because the sharks usually feed near the surface. Rangers patrol the area, and every boat follows a strict code. A trip lasts a few hours, and on a good day you will spend several minutes in the water alongside a shark that can be longer than the boat.

Diving and manta rays in Ari Atoll

Ari is the classic diving atoll of the Maldives, with dozens of thilas, small underwater pinnacles, inside a short boat ride of every resort. Mantas visit cleaning stations in both halves of the atoll, and resorts run guided snorkelling trips to them.

Questions

Luxury resorts in Ari Atoll: your questions answered

Which are the best luxury resorts in Ari Atoll?

Our five are W Maldives, Kandolhu and Constance Halaveli in North Ari, and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island and Constance Moofushi in South Ari. Conrad is best for whale sharks and families, Kandolhu for couples, W for a lively stay, Halaveli for families in the north and Moofushi for all-inclusive diving.

Can you see whale sharks all year in South Ari?

Yes. South Ari is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks can be seen in every month. Most encounters are while snorkelling along the outer reef of the South Ari Marine Protected Area. Sightings are never guaranteed, and calm, clear days give the best chance.

What are the rules for swimming with whale sharks?

Under the national regulation introduced in 2024, keep at least 3 metres from the shark’s body and 4 metres from its tail. Do not touch, chase or block it, do not use flash or bright lights, and keep your fins under the water. Boat numbers and speeds near a shark are limited.

Which Ari resort is closest to the whale sharks?

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island sits at the northern tip of the South Ari Marine Protected Area, which runs for about 42 km along the outer reef towards Dhigurah. Of our five, it is the best placed. LUX* South Ari Atoll, not on our list, sits inside the protected area.

North Ari or South Ari: which is better?

South Ari for whale sharks, North Ari for a wider choice of classic dive sites and a slightly shorter seaplane. Both are 20 to 30 minutes from MalΓ© by seaplane, and you can combine the two Constance resorts for one of each.

How do you get to Ari Atoll?

By seaplane, in 20 to 30 minutes, in daylight only. For South Ari you can also fly to Maamigili and finish by speedboat, which helps on later arrivals. A speedboat all the way to North Ari takes 60 to 90 minutes.

Is Ari Atoll good for families?

Yes. Conrad Rangali has Kids’ and Teens’ clubs on its family island, and Constance Halaveli has the Coconut Tribe club for ages 4 to 11 and family villas with a separate children’s room. Kandolhu is better for adults.

Are there manta rays in Ari Atoll?

Yes. Ari has manta cleaning stations in both its northern and southern halves, and resorts such as Kandolhu and Constance Moofushi run manta trips. For the big seasonal feeding gatherings, Baa Atoll in manta season is the place to go.

How much does a luxury holiday in Ari Atoll cost?

It depends on the resort, villa, meal plan, seaplane and dates, and rates change often, so we do not publish live rates. Tell us your dates and who is travelling and we will quote two or three Ari resorts side by side.
