Maldives VIP Transfers

A Maldives VIP transfer starts at the aircraft door: a host meets you, takes you through fast-track immigration at Velana International Airport and waits with you in a private lounge. From there you travel to your resort by private seaplane, yacht or speedboat instead of a shared transfer. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so your landing time decides which option works.

Your options

Four ways to arrive like a VIP

Most luxury arrivals combine two of these: a VIP service at the airport and a private transfer to the island.

01

VIP airport service

A host meets you as you leave the aircraft, takes you through fast-track immigration and customs, and waits with you in a private lounge while porters collect your bags. It works with any resort and any transfer.

Best for: everyone after a long-haul flight, families, and travellers who value privacy.

02

Private or resort seaplane

Instead of a shared flight that may stop at other resorts, you fly direct on your own aircraft, on your own schedule within daylight hours. A few resorts, including Velaa, Cheval Blanc and JOALI, run their own seaplanes or branded lounges.

Best for: outer-atoll resorts in Baa, Raa, Noonu and Lhaviyani.

03

Private yacht or speedboat

For resorts within about an hour of MalΓ©, a private yacht turns the transfer into a cruise, with a cool cabin, drinks and room for luggage. Boats run after dark, so they suit late arrivals.

Best for: North and South MalΓ© Atoll resorts and evening flights.

04

Private jet and regional airports

Private jets land at Velana International Airport and clear through VIP facilities. Some guests continue to regional airports such as Maafaru in Noonu Atoll, then finish by seaplane or yacht.

Best for: private aviation and the far north and south.

At the airport

Velana International Airport and the seaplane terminal

Almost every visitor arrives at Velana International Airport on HulhulΓ©, next to MalΓ©. A new passenger terminal opened in July 2025, with aerobridges, many more immigration counters and room for several times the passengers of the old building. VIP and CIP guests are handled separately, with private immigration and customs and lounges run by the airport company, such as the Maamahi Executive Lounge.

Seaplane guests move to the Noovilu seaplane terminal on the lagoon side of the airport, which opened in October 2022. It has 42 lounges, most of them run by individual resorts, so you wait in your resort’s own space with drinks and a host rather than a shared hall. Some ultra-luxury resorts, such as Soneva and Cheval Blanc, have their own private lounge or salon.

For resorts reached by boat, the resort’s team meets you in the arrivals area and walks you to the boat jetty, a few minutes from the terminal.

Choosing

Private seaplane or private yacht?

Private seaplane

  • The only practical way to reach most outer-atoll resorts quickly.
  • The view from the air over the atolls is a highlight in itself.
  • Direct, with no stops at other resorts.
  • Daylight only, with tight luggage space and weight limits.

Private yacht or speedboat

  • Best for resorts within about an hour of MalΓ©.
  • Runs day and night, so late flights are no problem.
  • Room for luggage, children and a drink on the way.
  • Can be bumpy in open water during the south-west monsoon.

Landing late

Seaplanes stop flying in the late afternoon, and some resorts set an earlier cut-off. Many long-haul flights land in the morning, but some arrive in the afternoon or evening. You have four good options.

Choose a resort reachable by boat

Resorts in North and South MalΓ© Atolls, such as Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, Ritz-Carlton Fari, One&Only Reethi Rah and Four Seasons Kuda Huraa, can take you by yacht or speedboat after dark.

Fly on by domestic flight

Domestic flights to regional airports often run later than seaplanes and suit resorts in the far north and south, finished by a short boat ride.

Spend the night near the airport

A hotel on HulhumalΓ©, a few minutes from the terminal, then the first seaplane in the morning. We arrange the hotel and the transfer back.

Wait in a lounge

If you land in the early afternoon, a VIP or resort lounge makes a two or three-hour wait for the seaplane easy.

Private aviation

Arriving by private jet

Private jets land at Velana International Airport, where VIP handling, immigration and customs are arranged before you arrive. From the aircraft you can step straight into a seaplane or onto a yacht. Some resorts in the north, such as Velaa, Soneva Fushi and The Nautilus, also receive guests through Maafaru airport in Noonu Atoll, and Nilaa Coral Island in the far south flies guests on its own private jet.

Departure tax for private jets is higher than for scheduled flights and is charged per passenger. Our luxury holiday cost guide explains the taxes and charges on a Maldives trip, and our private jet guide covers airports, flight times and permits.

Good to know

Luggage, children, mobility and departure day

Luggage
Shared seaplanes have strict weight limits and charge for excess. Private charters are more flexible, but cabin space is still limited, so soft bags are best.
Children
Children pay a child rate on transfers. Ask for life jackets in the right size on boats, and tell us about prams and car seats so they are loaded with your bags.
Mobility
Ask for wheelchair assistance at the airport. Boats and seaplanes have steps and pontoons, so tell us early and the resort will plan the boarding.
Departure day
Book a VIP departure as well: fast-track check-in and security and a lounge. Late check-out or a day room helps with evening flights.
Privacy
For high-profile guests, VIP facilities can arrange a separate entrance and screening, and private transfers avoid shared flights entirely.
Weather
Seaplanes can be delayed by heavy rain or strong wind, mostly from May to October. Leave a margin before onward plans.

The honest answer

Is a VIP transfer worth it?

Worth it if

  • You land after a long-haul flight with children or a lot of luggage
  • Your resort is in an outer atoll and a shared seaplane would stop elsewhere first
  • You are celebrating a honeymoon or milestone and want the first hour to feel special
  • You value privacy or are travelling as a high-profile guest

Probably skip it if

  • Your resort is 20 to 30 minutes away by speedboat and you land in the morning
  • You are travelling light and do not mind the main arrivals hall
  • You would rather spend the budget on an extra night or an experience

Questions

Maldives VIP transfers: your questions answered

What is a VIP transfer in the Maldives?

It usually means two things: a VIP airport service at Velana International Airport, where you are met at the aircraft, taken through fast-track immigration and given a private lounge, and a private transfer to your resort by seaplane, yacht or speedboat instead of a shared one.

Can I book a private seaplane in the Maldives?

Yes. Most seaplane resorts can arrange a private charter, and a few, such as Velaa, Cheval Blanc Randheli and JOALI, run their own branded aircraft. Private seaplanes still fly in daylight only.

Do seaplanes fly at night in the Maldives?

No. Seaplanes land on water by sight and fly from roughly sunrise to late afternoon. If your flight lands in the evening, choose a resort reachable by boat, take a domestic flight, or spend a night near the airport.

Which luxury resorts have the shortest transfer from MalΓ©?

Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi is about 30 minutes by yacht, Four Seasons Kuda Huraa about 25 minutes and The Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands and One&Only Reethi Rah about 45 minutes by boat, or 10 to 15 minutes by seaplane.

Is there a VIP lounge at MalΓ© airport?

Yes. Velana International Airport has VIP and business lounges run by the airport company, including at the Noovilu seaplane terminal, and more than 40 resort lounges where guests wait for their seaplane.

Can a private jet fly directly to my resort?

Not to the resort island itself. Private jets land at Velana International Airport, and some fly on to regional airports such as Maafaru in Noonu Atoll, from where resorts like Velaa and Soneva finish the trip by boat or seaplane. Nilaa Coral Island runs its own private jet.

How far ahead should I book a VIP transfer?

Ideally when you book the resort, and at least two weeks before you travel. Private seaplanes and yachts are limited at Christmas, New Year and Easter, so book these as early as possible.

How much does a VIP transfer in the Maldives cost?

It depends on the distance, the aircraft or boat, the number of guests and the season, so we do not publish live rates. We include transfers and any VIP service in every quote so you can compare resorts fairly.
