Yes, you can charter a fishing boat from Dhangethi, and the channel fishing nearby is the reason to bother. Giant trevally, dogtooth tuna and jobfish hold along the kandu edges where current pushes bait between the ocean and the lagoon, strongest May to October. The honest caveat is scale. This is a small island with a small fleet, so a boat has to be arranged ahead rather than found on arrival. Most people searching for fishing at Dhangethi want one of two quite different things, and booking the wrong one is the commonest mistake we see.
An excursion is the shared evening trip: two or three hours, handlines over the reef, snapper and grouper for the guesthouse kitchen, no experience needed, priced per person. South Ari’s reputation rests on its channels and thilas, the same underwater structure that makes the atoll a diving destination. For an angler, a kandu is a bait conveyor: tidal current squeezes between the ocean and the lagoon, small fish get pushed through, and predators hold along the edges waiting. Dhangethi sits inside the stretch of South Ari covered by the marine protected area declared in 2009, the belt created to safeguard the whale shark aggregation that this part of the atoll is known for. Whale sharks are present here year-round, which is unusual anywhere in the world and is the main reason most visitors come.
For fishing, the effect is simple: trips run beyond the protected fringe before lines go in, so allow for the steam out and back when you’re deciding between a half day and a full day. Worth knowing before you compare listings: some charter services marketing to islands in this atoll advertise guided spearfishing with spearguns supplied. Spearfishing is prohibited throughout the Maldives under Regulation R-75/2020, with no exemption for tourists and no atoll where it’s allowed. Offering it next to a marine protected area says something about how carefully that service reads the rules. Rod, handline, jigging and popping are all entirely legal on a licensed boat.

The island lies about 48 kilometres from Velana International Airport. Times and days vary by boat and season, so confirm the current schedule when you book rather than relying on a timetable found online. Fleet depth. A few hundred residents means a handful of boats, most of them working for the dive centres and guesthouses. In high season the calendar fills, and a charter request on arrival often becomes a shared excursion instead. Book before you fly.

Fixed schedules. There’s no published weekly fishing programme here. Everything is arranged per group, which is flexible but unpredictable, and the boats are often the same ones running whale shark trips that morning. For structure, a resort-based fishing holiday is the better shape.
Late nights and alcohol. This is an inhabited island: no alcohol, modest dress in the village, swimwear at the bikini beach or on the boat. None of it affects the fishing, but it does shape the trip around it.
The licence travels with the boat and its captain under the Fisheries Act 14/2019, so you carry no paperwork of your own; being on a properly licensed vessel is what matters, and we confirm that before supplying one.
