Maldives cruise Β· Updated October 2026 Β· By Abdulla Maseeh

Luxury Cruises in the Maldives

A luxury cruise in the Maldives usually means a private yacht or a small, high-end boat, not a big cruise ship. The best options are resort cruises such as Soneva in Aqua and The Nautilus’s overnight trips, private crewed charters through the atolls, and luxury liveaboards for divers. For the calmest seas, go between November and April, and pair your cruise with a few nights at a resort.

Five kinds of luxury cruise in the Maldives

From two hours at sunset to a week at sea, these are the cruises our luxury guests book. Most people choose one short cruise and one longer one.

  1. 1

    Sunset and dolphin cruise

About two hours on a yacht, catamaran or dhoni as the sun goes down, often with spinner dolphins alongside. Every luxury resort runs one, shared or private.

Best for: every stay, even a short one

  2. 2

    Private day cruise

A half or full day on a private yacht: a sandbank lunch, snorkelling on a distant reef and a slow cruise home.

Best for: couples, families and celebrations

  3. 3

    Overnight resort cruise

One to four nights on a resort’s own yacht, with a chef and crew, before you return to your villa.

Best for: honeymoons and once-in-a-lifetime nights

  4. 4

    Multi-night private charter

Three to ten nights on a crewed yacht through the atolls, planned around your group.

Best for: groups and people who want to keep moving

  5. 5

    Luxury liveaboard

A week on a dive and snorkel boat with comfortable cabins, chasing mantas, sharks and whale sharks.

Best for: divers and marine life lovers

A note on the Four Seasons Explorer. The Four Seasons catamaran that cruised between Kuda Huraa and Landaa Giraavaru left the Maldives in 2023 and now sails in Palau. Some older guides still list it.

The best luxury resort cruises

These resorts run their own cruises, from sunset sails to nights at sea. You book them with your stay, and the boat collects you from the jetty.

Cruise, resort or both?

A cruise is better for

  • Seeing several atolls, reefs and sandbanks in one trip.
  • Mantas, whale sharks and dive sites far from any resort.
  • Groups who want to be together on one boat.
  • People who get restless on one island.

A resort is better for

  • Space, a private pool and a big bed that does not move.
  • Spa days, kids’ clubs and a choice of restaurants.
  • Anyone who gets seasick.
  • A slower holiday with no timetable at all.

Our favourite answer is both: two or three nights at sea, then four to seven at a resort. See luxury packages or build your own.

When to go on a luxury cruise

November to April is the calm season. The north-east monsoon brings drier weather, flat seas and the clearest water of the year, which matters most on longer cruises between atolls. December to March is the busiest time, so book early.

May to October brings more wind and passing showers, and the sea can be lumpy on open crossings. It is also manta season in Baa Atoll, and sunset and day cruises inside the lagoons run well all year.

Spinner dolphins are seen on most sunset cruises in every season. More in our dolphin cruise guide and sunset cruise guide.

Luxury cruises in the Maldives: your questions answered

Is there a luxury cruise in the Maldives?

Yes, but not usually on a big ship. Luxury cruising in the Maldives means a private yacht for a day or a night, a resort cruise such as Soneva in Aqua or The Nautilus’s overnight trip, a multi-night crewed charter, or a small luxury liveaboard.

Do large cruise ships visit the Maldives?

A few ocean cruise ships call at MalΓ© on Indian Ocean voyages, usually for a day. You see little of the atolls that way, so if the Maldives is the point of the trip, it is better to fly in and cruise on a small boat or yacht.

Is the Four Seasons Explorer still sailing in the Maldives?

No. The Four Seasons Explorer catamaran, which used to cruise between Kuda Huraa and Landaa Giraavaru, left the Maldives in 2023 and now sails in Palau. Soneva in Aqua and The Nautilus’s yachts are the closest resort alternatives today.

What is the best luxury cruise for a honeymoon?

An overnight trip on a resort yacht, such as Soneva in Aqua from Soneva Fushi or The Nautilus’s yachts in Baa Atoll, or a private sunset cruise from your resort. For more nights at sea, a crewed private charter. See our yacht charter guide.

How long should a luxury cruise be?

Two hours for a sunset cruise, a day for a private yacht trip, one to four nights for a resort cruise and about a week for a liveaboard. Most of our guests combine a cruise with a resort stay.

What is included in a luxury Maldives cruise?

It depends on the cruise. Most include the crew, meals and soft drinks, snorkel gear and water toys. Alcohol, diving, fuel for longer routes, permits and taxes vary, so we list every inclusion in your quote.

When is the best time for a luxury cruise in the Maldives?

November to April has the calmest seas and clearest water. May to October brings more wind and showers, but it is manta season in Baa Atoll and many short cruises run happily all year.

How much is a luxury cruise in the Maldives?

It depends on the boat, the length of the cruise, the season and what is included, so we do not publish live rates. Send us your dates and we will quote the options side by side.

Tell us how long you want at sea

Send your dates, who is travelling and how many nights you would like on the water. We will come back with the right cruise, a resort to pair it with and a full written quote.
