Pullman markets itself as the most generous all-inclusive in the Maldives, and on food and drink that’s a fair claim. The fishing sits outside it.
Stay seven nights or more and you get one group sunset cruise or one group sunset fishing trip per person. Not both. Stay six nights and you get neither as an inclusion. Excursions are also booked on arrival rather than in advance, so you’re choosing at the desk with whatever slots are left.
That combination catches people out. A five-night all-inclusive stay at a resort famous for including everything will not include the fishing, and you won’t find that out until you’re standing at the excursions desk. If the fishing matters, either book seven nights or budget for it as a paid extra from the start.
Seven nights or more brings one sunset cruise or sunset fishing trip per person, plus a spa add-on. Ten nights or more adds an excursion credit per person on top. Below seven nights, the fishing is chargeable like any other excursion.
Big game fishing is a separate paid trip at any length of stay. It is not part of the inclusion at all, and it is the only way to reach the deeper water where the marlin, tuna and dorado are.
Pullman states that the water around Gaafu Alifu holds as many as thirteen different shark species. That’s presented as a diving attraction, which it certainly is. For an angler it means something else.
A hooked fish is a distressed fish, and a distressed fish on a reef full of sharks is a dinner bell. Anglers call it depredation. You fight something for ten minutes, and what arrives at the boat is a head. In an atoll this densely populated it happens often enough to plan for rather than to be surprised by.
There is no remedy. Every shark in the Maldives has been fully protected since 2010, with no exemption of any kind, and a shark hooked by accident must be released immediately. Nobody is going to thin them out for your comfort, nor should they.
The practical response is to fish where they aren’t rather than to fight them. Ask the crew to move off a spot after a couple of hits rather than persisting, because once sharks have learned a boat is producing struggling fish, that spot is finished for the session. A good local crew will do this without being asked.
Worth saying plainly: this isn’t a reason to fish somewhere else. It’s the price of fishing water this rich, and it comes with the thing that makes Huvadhoo worth the journey in the first place.

The resort’s own description of the sunset trip is worth noting: traditional bait and hand reels, not rods. That’s the older Maldivian method, worked by feel through the fingers rather than through a rod tip, and it needs no experience whatsoever. It is also a group trip rather than a private charter, which suits it to a mixed party and less well to a serious angler.
Pullman also runs a PADI five-star dive centre and keeps a marine biologist on staff, which is unusual enough to matter. If you want to understand the water rather than just fish it, that’s an asset, and the same biologist runs the dolphin trips.
Maamutaa sits in Gaafu Alifu, roughly 370 kilometres south of Male. Getting there is a domestic flight of about fifty to sixty minutes to Kooddoo, then a speedboat of fifteen to twenty minutes.
One quiet advantage over the northern resorts: domestic flights aren’t bound by the daylight limit that governs seaplanes. A late international arrival can still reach the island the same night, where a seaplane resort would have cost you a night near the airport and, on a short stay, quite possibly your only fishing day.
That distance is also why the fishing is what it is. Huvadhoo carries the lowest fishing pressure of any commercially viable water in the country, simply because almost nobody goes to the trouble. Three things the resort doesn’t publish, and you should ask about.

Compare that with COMO Maalifushi, which publishes a catch quota as an actual number, or Kuredu, which publishes trip lengths and a guest cap. Pullman documents its programme less thoroughly than either, which is not a criticism of the fishing itself, only of what you can find out before you arrive.

The thing worth getting right here happens before you travel, not after. Whether your stay reaches seven nights decides whether the sunset fishing is included or charged, and excursions can only be booked once you land, so arriving without a plan means taking whatever slots are left.

The trade-off is a longer and more expensive journey, and fewer independent boats to fall back on if a resort programme does not suit you.
The resort does not publish a policy on this, which is why we cannot tell you. Ask when you book whether the kitchen will prepare your catch and whether that applies to the sunset trip, the big game trip or both. Practice varies widely between Maldivian resorts, from cooking it to order through to keeping nothing at all.
COMO if you want the fishing documented before you book, since it publishes a catch quota, trip durations and a flats programme with a stated season. Pullman if you want an all-inclusive island in less pressured water with a shorter, cheaper journey than Thaa. Pullman is the better value stay; COMO is the better documented fishery.
