Fishing at COMO Maalifushi

Every Maldivian resort says it fishes responsibly. This is the only one that tells you the number.

Written by the HolidayVibe Maldives team in Male, reviewed by Abdulla Maseeh · Updated September 2026

COMO Maalifushi sits alone in Thaa Atoll, an hour south of Male by seaplane. It runs three kinds of fishing, and each one has a different rule about what happens to the fish.

That’s the useful thing about this resort, and almost nobody writes it down.

One per person. Three per couple. COMO’s stated game fishing quota. Once you reach it, you keep fishing on catch and release. No other Maldivian resort we’ve documented publishes an actual figure.

We’ve now read the published fishing policy of every resort in our fishing resort comparison. They all describe limits. Hurawalhi says species and numbers are restricted. Finolhu says a marine biologist sets a per-guest quota. Neither says what the number is.

COMO does. One fish per person, three per couple, then you carry on fishing and everything goes back. You can plan around that. You can decide before you book whether it’s enough for you, which is more than any other resort in the country lets you do.

Three programmes, three different rules

ProgrammeWhere and howWhat happens to the fish
Game fishingOffshore from the Marine Sports Centre boatKeep one per person or three per couple, then catch and release
Light tackle and flyFlats, lagoons and the inner atoll drop-off, from a flats skiffStrict catch and release throughout. Nothing kept
Billfish, on any tripOffshoreTag and release only, under all circumstances

Running three policies at once isn’t fussiness. It reflects what’s actually being caught. A yellowfin tuna is a fish you can reasonably eat. A sailfish is a slow-growing apex predator that takes years to replace, so it goes back with a tag in it. A triggerfish on a flat is a hard-won technical catch that nobody was ever going to eat anyway.

COMO states that billfish are tag and release only, which is a stricter rule than its general catch quota.

The practical version: if the point of your trip is eating what you catch, book the game fishing and understand you’re getting one fish. If the point is the fishing itself, the flats programme is the better day out and the question doesn’t arise.

The flats, and the season that governs them

Guide poling a shallow draft flats skiff across clear turquoise water while an angler waits with a fly rod, Thaa Atoll, Maldives
Flats fishing works from a shallow draft skiff poled quietly across water often barely knee deep.

COMO fishes the flats from a Hewes Redfisher 18, a shallow-draft skiff of the kind used in the Florida Keys, in three, five and eight hour formats. Most sites are within thirty minutes of the island. The targets are titan triggerfish, giant trevally, red snapper and bonefish, with jigging for grouper on the drop-off.

The flats programme runs December to April only. Sight-fishing needs the clear water and low wind of the north east monsoon, and outside that window it doesn’t work. If your dates fall between May and November and the fly fishing is why you’re going, change the dates or change the plan. This is the single most common way people waste a trip here.

Thaa is the only atoll in the Maldives with a single resort in it, which is why COMO can describe water where the fish have never seen a fly. That claim is doing real work rather than selling: a flat that has been fished twice in its history behaves completely differently from one worked every week.

A tailing triggerfish gives itself away with a tail tip through the surface, which is the whole game on the flats.

We won’t rehearse the craft here, because we’ve written it properly elsewhere. Rod weights, fly patterns, what a realistic day looks like and an honest comparison against the Seychelles are all on our Maldives fly fishing guide. One thing worth repeating though: this is a demanding saltwater fishery, and a dedicated fly week is the wrong place to learn to double-haul.

Booking mechanics people get wrong

Three small things, all stated by the resort, all easy to miss.

RuleWhy it matters
Reserve at least four hours aheadYou can’t decide over breakfast to fish that morning. Book the night before
Children twelve and under must be accompaniedUnlike the adults-only Lhaviyani resorts, families can fish here
Sixty minute seaplane from VelanaDaylight only, so a late arrival costs a night near the airport

That last one bites harder here than further north, because an hour each way is a serious slice of a short stay. Thaa is remote, and the remoteness that keeps the flats unfished is the same remoteness that eats your first day.

Who this suits

It suits a couple where one fishes and one doesn’t, better than almost anywhere in the country. The angler gets flats water that barely sees a fly. The other person gets a COMO resort. That combination is rarer than it sounds, because serious fishing destinations tend to be short on everything else.

It suits anyone who wants the fishing question settled in writing before they book. And it suits a family, since children can fish with a guardian, which rules out three of the resorts we’ve covered.

It doesn’t suit anyone travelling May to November who wants the flats, and it doesn’t suit an angler who measures a trip by what goes in the cool box. One fish per person is a clear answer, and for some people it’s the wrong one.

Booking COMO Maalifushi through us

Thaa is the awkward one. A single resort in the atoll means no independent boats to fall back on, an hour of seaplane each way, and a fly season that shuts in April. Get the dates wrong and there is no local workaround, which is exactly the situation where booking through someone in Male helps.

We’ll check your dates against the December to April flats window before anything is confirmed, line the seaplane slot up against your international flight so you don’t lose a day at the start, and get the fishing reserved ahead rather than leaving it to the four-hour rule on arrival. If you’ve been quoted elsewhere, send it over and we’ll tell you straight whether we can beat it.

Questions

How many fish can you keep at COMO Maalifushi?

One per person, or three per couple, on the game fishing programme. Once you reach that quota you continue fishing under catch and release. It is the only published catch figure we have found at any Maldivian resort. On light tackle and fly fishing the policy is strict catch and release with nothing kept, and billfish are tag and release only under all circumstances.

When can you fly fish at COMO Maalifushi?

December to April. Sight-fishing on flats needs the clear water and settled wind of the north east monsoon, and the programme does not run outside that window. If the fly fishing is the reason for the trip, the dates are not negotiable, and booking May to November for flats work is the commonest way to waste a trip to Thaa.

What can you catch at COMO Maalifushi?

Offshore, the resort names blue marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi and giant trevally. On the flats and the inner atoll drop-off, titan triggerfish, giant trevally, red snapper and bonefish, with grouper on the jig. The species mix is unusually wide because the three programmes fish completely different water.

Can children fish at COMO Maalifushi?

Yes. The resort states that children aged twelve and under must be accompanied by a guardian, which is a supervision rule rather than an exclusion. That makes it a genuine option for families, unlike Hurawalhi and Komandoo in Lhaviyani, which are adults-only islands, or Kuredu, where the big game boat carries a minimum age of twelve.

What boat does COMO use for flats fishing?

A Hewes Redfisher 18, a shallow-draft flats skiff of the type associated with the Florida Keys. It is poled across water often barely knee deep, which is the only way to approach tailing fish without spooking them. Trips run in three, five and eight hour formats, with most fishing sites within thirty minutes of the island.

Do you need to book fishing in advance at COMO?

At least four hours ahead, by the resort’s own rule. In practice that means booking the night before rather than deciding at breakfast. Given the seaplane transfer takes an hour each way and arrivals are daylight-only, it is worth having the fishing days provisionally agreed before you travel rather than sorting it on the island.

Is Thaa Atoll good for fishing?

It is the least-fished serious water in the country, because it holds a single resort and no established charter fleet. That means very low pressure on the flats and drop-offs, which is genuinely rare. The trade-off is that there is no alternative if the resort programme does not suit you, and no independent boat to hire instead.

About this guide

Fishing claims here come from COMO Maalifushi’s own published material, checked on 1 September 2026: its game fishing page, its light tackle and fly fishing page, and its experiences listing. The resort publishes no prices, and we have not reproduced any. Where COMO states a rule, such as the catch quota or the four hour booking notice, we have quoted the rule rather than paraphrasing it.
