Maldives Fine Dining: The Best Resorts for Food and Wine

The best resorts in the Maldives for fine dining are Velaa Private Island, Soneva Fushi, Cheval Blanc Randheli, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, One&Only Reethi Rah, The Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands, JOALI and Amilla. Choose by the meal you care about most: a serious wine cellar, a French tasting menu, Japanese at a counter, or dinner on your own sandbank.

How to choose

What makes a Maldives resort great for food

Every luxury resort feeds you well. The ones on this page go further, with a signature restaurant worth the trip on its own, chefs who cook in front of you, a wine cellar with a sommelier, and kitchens that build menus around what was caught or picked that day.

Two things matter more than the number of restaurants. First, variety over a week: a resort with a Japanese counter, a garden restaurant and a grill keeps a seven-night stay interesting. Second, how the meal plan works, because the best tables are often outside half board and all-inclusive plans.

Looking for restaurants below the surface? Underwater dining has its own guide to underwater restaurants in the Maldives.

01Best for wine

Velaa Private Island

Noonu Atoll Β· Signature: Aragu, Tavaru and Cru

Aragu is Velaa’s signature restaurant: an East-meets-West menu served over the water with live piano, and a wine list of more than 800 selections that holds a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence. Above the palms, the Tavaru tower pairs a teppanyaki restaurant with a cellar the resort calls the largest private wine cellar in the Maldives, where you can book a private tasting table. Cru adds a champagne lounge with rare vintages, and guest chefs cook during Velaa’s Gastronomy Month.

Skip it if you want a long list of casual restaurants. Velaa has a few very polished venues rather than many.

Soneva Fushi

Baa Atoll Β· Signature: Fresh in the Garden, So Hands On, Once Upon a Table

Soneva Fushi lists more than ten dining experiences across a large, jungle-covered island. Fresh in the Garden sits above the resort’s organic gardens, So Hands On is an omakase sushi counter run by Chef Akira, and Once Upon a Table serves tasting menus by visiting chefs. Between meals, the Cheese Room, the Chocolate Room and the ice creams and sorbets made each day are open around the clock, and the wine cellar is known for rare vintages and organic wines.

Skip it if you want formal, white-tablecloth dining. Soneva is barefoot and relaxed, even at its best tables.

Cheval Blanc Randheli

Noonu Atoll Β· Signature: Le 1947, Diptyque, Deelani

Le 1947 serves French gastronomy with Maldivian influences as an 11-course tasting menu, in a tropical garden setting. Diptyque brings Japanese and East Asian food with live culinary theatre, Deelani serves Italian over the water, and the glass-walled Wine Museum and Cigar Lounge suits a slow evening. Carte Blanche covers in-villa dining at any hour, including picnics on a sandbank.

Skip it if you want the signature restaurant every night. Le 1947 serves dinner three nights a week, so book it early.

Waldorf Astoria has around ten venues and the widest range of any resort on this list. Terra serves seven-course seasonal menus in seven bamboo pods up in the trees. The Ledge is a wood-fire barbecue designed by Michelin-starred chef Dave Pynt, Li Long roasts its Beijing duck in the Maldives’ first wood-fired oven, and Zuma runs a contemporary Japanese izakaya over the water. For wine, The Rock offers pairing menus around a 200-year-old jarrah wood table.

Skip it if you want a small, quiet island. Waldorf Astoria is a large, polished resort.

TAPASAKE is one of the best-looking restaurants in the country: an overwater Japanese restaurant with interiors by Jean-Michel Gathy, a sushi bar where you watch the chefs at work, multi-course teppanyaki menus and sake flights. Botanica serves farm-to-table dinners in a candlelit garden with a gin bar, and Fanditha brings Middle Eastern cooking to a beach at the northern tip of the island. Rabarbaro covers long Italian lunches by the pool.

Skip it if you want everything a short walk away. Reethi Rah is a big island, and you will use a buggy or bike.

IWAU, which means “to celebrate” in Japanese, is built around two chef’s tables, with local seafood and premium meats, sake and rare Japanese whiskies. Summer Pavilion serves modern Cantonese dishes such as Maldivian lobster and Peking duck, with a chef’s tasting menu in its private dining room. La Locanda cooks Italian over the water, the EAU Bar becomes a restaurant with DJ sets after dark, and Dining by Design sets private dinners on sandbanks, gardens and beaches.

Bellinis is the Italian, and Vandhoo the main restaurant with a cellar of hand-picked wines. For a special night, the woven Manta Ray Treehouse and private sandbanks are part of JOALI’s destination dining, and Her Kitchen lets you cook local recipes with the resort’s chefs.

08Best for relaxed fine dining

Amilla Maldives

Baa Atoll Β· Signature: The Cellar Door, Feeling Koi, Barolo

Amilla is the easy-going choice. The Cellar Door holds thousands of Old and New World labels, with private tastings at a long table among the barrels. Feeling Koi serves sushi and sashimi over the water, Barolo makes its own pasta with vegetables from the organic garden, and the Emperor Beach Club cooks traditional Maldivian dishes on the sand. Dine by Design sets up sandbank dinners and sunrise breakfasts, and residence guests can book a private chef.

Skip it if you want a big-name visiting chef. Amilla’s strength is good food without the formality.

Fine dining experiences worth booking

A sushi chef preparing a platter at the counter at TAPASAKE, One&Only Reethi Rah

Chef’s tables and counters

Sit at the counter and the meal becomes a conversation with the chef. Look for IWAU’s two chef’s tables at The Ritz-Carlton, the TAPASAKE sushi bar at Reethi Rah, Chef Akira’s omakase counter at Soneva Fushi and teppanyaki at Velaa’s Tavaru. Seats are few, so book them with the villa.

Wine cellars and tastings

The best resorts treat wine seriously. Velaa’s Aragu list runs to more than 800 selections, Amilla’s Cellar Door holds thousands of labels, and JOALI runs daily sommelier-led tastings. A private tasting is a good first evening, before you choose wines for the rest of the stay.

Private dinners

Almost every luxury resort will set a table for two on a sandbank, a quiet beach or your villa deck, with a menu planned with the chef and your own waiter. Names vary, from Dining by Design at The Ritz-Carlton to Dine by Design at Amilla and Carte Blanche at Cheval Blanc.

Meal plans, dress codes and booking tips

  1. Book the best tables with the villa

Signature restaurants have few seats and some open only a few nights a week. We reserve them when we book your stay.

  2. Check what your meal plan covers

On half board, full board and all-inclusive plans, signature restaurants often carry a supplement or sit outside the plan. We tell you exactly which venues are included.

  3. Pack for “island chic”

Evening dress codes at signature restaurants ask for no swimwear or flip-flops, and often no shorts for men. Linen trousers and smart sandals are enough.

  4. Send dietary needs early

Resort chefs handle vegan, gluten-free, halal and allergy menus well when they know in advance.

Questions

Maldives fine dining: your questions answered

Which Maldives resort has the best fine dining?

For a single standout, Velaa Private Island for wine, Cheval Blanc Randheli for a French tasting menu, and Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi for the widest range. One&Only Reethi Rah has one of the best Japanese restaurants, and The Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands has two chef’s tables at IWAU.

Are there Michelin-starred restaurants in the Maldives?

The Michelin Guide does not rate the Maldives, so no restaurant there holds a star. Several resorts work with Michelin-starred chefs, such as The Ledge by Dave Pynt at Waldorf Astoria, and guest chef events bring starred chefs to resorts such as Velaa.

Is fine dining included in all-inclusive packages?

Usually not in full. Most all-inclusive and full board plans cover the main restaurants, while signature restaurants, tasting menus, chef’s tables and premium wines carry a supplement. Some resorts offer dine-around plans with credit you can use anywhere.

What should I wear to dinner at a luxury resort?

Most signature restaurants ask for “island chic”: no swimwear or beach flip-flops, and often no shorts or sleeveless tops for men. Linen shirts, light trousers and smart sandals are fine.

Can I have a private dinner on a sandbank?

Yes. Most luxury resorts offer private dinners on a sandbank, a beach or your villa deck, with a menu planned with the chef. Sandbank dinners depend on the weather and tide, so book early and keep a back-up night.

Where can I eat underwater in the Maldives?

Underwater restaurants are a separate experience from the resorts on this page. See our guide to underwater dining in the Maldives.

How far ahead should I book restaurants?

Book chef’s tables, tasting menus and private dinners when you book the villa, especially from December to April. Some signature restaurants only open a few nights a week.

How much does fine dining cost in the Maldives?

It depends on the resort, the restaurant and your meal plan, and prices change, so we do not publish them. Tell us how you like to eat and we will quote the villa, meal plan and dining together.
