Bodu beru drummers and dancers in traditional dress leading a beach wedding procession at Velaa Private Island, Noonu Atoll

Luxury Maldives Β· Updated October 2026 Β· By Abdulla Maseeh

Luxury Wedding Resorts in the Maldives

The best luxury wedding resorts in the Maldives are Velaa Private Island, Amilla, The Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, Baros, LUX* South Ari Atoll and Halcyon. One thing to know first: weddings for foreign couples in the Maldives are symbolic, not legally binding, so most couples marry legally at home and celebrate here.

Most private

Velaa Private Island

Noonu Atoll Β· Couples to whole-island weddings

Ceremony settingsVelaa beach, private beach dinner gazebo, whole-island buyout

Velaa offers three wedding packages, Kaiveni, Loabi and Umurah, all built around a ceremony on the beach with a floral set-up, a traditional bodu beru procession, a wedding cake and a private beach barbecue afterwards. The larger packages add a pianist during the ceremony, a bespoke cake, canapΓ©s and a coral adoption. With only 47 villas, and the option to book the whole island, it suits couples who want complete privacy.

Skip it if you want a big, lively party with lots of other guests around. Velaa is quiet by design.

Amilla has four wedding settings: The Knot, an intimate dedicated wedding spot; Beachfront Bliss on the open sand; an Overwater Pavilion above the lagoon; and ceremonies inside its residences. Every wedding has a dedicated planner, a bodu beru welcome and a romantic beach dinner. With residences of up to eight bedrooms, the wedding party can stay together under one roof.

Skip it if you want an ultra-formal, black-tie feel. Amilla is relaxed and homely.

The Ritz-Carlton hosts ceremonies on its palm-fringed beaches and, at sunset, on the overwater deck of the EAU Bar, with the lagoon on three sides. It is 45 minutes from MalΓ© by speedboat, so guests can fly in for a long weekend without seaplane timings, and the four-bedroom Estate and Private Coves give families space together.

Skip it if you want a traditional thatched look in your photos. The Ritz-Carlton is sleek and modern.

Waldorf Astoria offers three ceremony settings: its Private Beach, Nava Beach and a dedicated Wedding Pavilion, followed by dinner on the sand with a menu from the pastry and culinary teams. For a large wedding, Ithaafushi Private Island, the resort’s own separate island, can be booked for the whole party, and the resort is only about 30 minutes from MalΓ© by yacht.

Skip it if you want something small and barefoot. Waldorf Astoria is a big, polished resort.

Baros is one of the Maldives’ most romantic resorts, and its ceremonies make the most of the water: vows on the Piano Deck, an offshore deck over the lagoon, on a private sandbank, or on the beach with a bodu beru procession. It is 25 minutes from MalΓ© by speedboat, and an intimate, adults-oriented island.

Skip it if you are bringing children or a big group. Baros is small and couple-focused.

Where to say “I do”

Six ways to get married in the Maldives

Local touches

Maldivian wedding traditions to include

The sound most couples remember is bodu beru, the big Maldivian drums. Drummers in sarongs, often with dancers in the traditional red libaas, lead the couple or the guests to the ceremony, and the rhythm builds as you arrive. Almost every resort package includes it.

Other touches resorts can add are a garland of fresh flowers, a Maldivian dinner of reef fish, coconut and curries, a boat procession to a sandbank, and coral adoption, where you plant a coral frame on the house reef in your names.

Timeline

Planning a Maldives wedding, step by step

  1. 12 to 18 months before

Choose the resort and dates, especially for December to April. Book guest villas and agree the package.

  2. 9 to 12 months before

Arrange the legal marriage at home. Book photographer, flowers and any extras.

  3. 3 to 6 months before

Confirm menus, music and the ceremony script with the resort’s wedding planner. Arrange guests’ transfers.

  4. The week before

Arrive a few days early, meet the planner, do a walk-through of the ceremony site and confirm a weather back-up.

Bringing family and friends

For a wedding with guests, the transfer and the villas matter as much as the venue. Resorts near MalΓ©, such as The Ritz-Carlton, Waldorf Astoria and Baros, are reached by boat at any time of day. Multi-bedroom residences keep families together, and a private island buyout turns the whole resort into your venue. We can hold a block of villas and plan everyone’s transfers.

When to marry

December to April is the dry season and peak wedding time. Book these months a year or more ahead. May and November are good value with generally fine weather, and every resort has a covered back-up venue.

Questions

Maldives weddings: your questions answered

Is a wedding in the Maldives legally binding?

Not for foreign tourists. Maldivian law does not allow non-Muslim foreign couples to legally marry there, so resort weddings are symbolic ceremonies. Most couples marry legally at home, at a short registry appointment before or after the trip, and celebrate in the Maldives.

Can foreigners get married in the Maldives?

You can have a full wedding ceremony and celebration, but it is not a legal marriage. Resorts make this clear and some ask couples to sign an acknowledgement. Check with your home registry office for the legal side.

Do I need documents for a symbolic wedding in the Maldives?

Usually only your passport details, travel dates and ceremony choices. There is no marriage licence, birth certificate or certificate of no impediment, because the ceremony is not a legal marriage.

What is the best time of year for a Maldives wedding?

December to April, the dry north-east monsoon, has the most reliable weather and is the busiest wedding season. May and November are good value with generally good weather. Every resort has an indoor or covered back-up.

How many guests can we invite?

Anything from just the two of you to a whole private island. Smaller resorts suit up to about 20 guests; larger resorts, residences and private island buyouts suit bigger weddings.

Can we have a traditional Maldivian element?

Yes. Bodu beru drummers are part of most packages, and some resorts add a garland of flowers, local music or a Maldivian dinner.

Are same-sex weddings possible in the Maldives?

Same-sex marriage is not recognised under Maldivian law. Talk to us in confidence about resorts that are comfortable hosting a private celebration for two.

How much does a luxury wedding in the Maldives cost?

It depends on the resort, package, guest numbers and dates, and rates change, so we do not publish live rates. Tell us your dates and guest list and we will quote the wedding, villas and transfers together.
