01The island

Banyans, 2,500 palms and a long white beach

Amilla is a proper island, not a sandbar. At around 1.5 km long it has room for jungle paths under ancient banyans, white-tailed tropic birds, organic gardens, about 2,500 coconut palms that supply the resort's own oil and coconut cream, and a long beach that wraps round the lagoon.

The feel is relaxed and homely rather than formal. Your Katheeb, the resort's word for a personal host, handles the details, food is grown and made on the island where possible, and solar panels generate around 950,000 kWh a year.

Its biggest draws are space and Baa Atoll itself. Hanifaru Bay, the famous manta and whale shark site, is about 15 minutes away by speedboat.

  • 5 to 10 nights, especially for families.
