Maamigili Fishing Charters: Land at Lunchtime, Fish by Sunset

Maamigili is the only island in South Ari with its own airport. That single fact makes it the most practical fishing base in the atoll for anyone who doesn’t want to spend four hours of a short trip sitting on a speedboat.

The short answer

Yes, you can charter a fishing boat from Maamigili, and the airport is the reason to choose it over its neighbours. Villa International Airport Maamigili (VAM) sits on the island itself, roughly 25 to 30 minutes from Velana by domestic flight, so you can land in the morning and fish the same afternoon rather than losing most of a day to a two hour boat transfer.

The fishing is South Ari’s: steep drop-offs and channels with visibility often running 25 to 40 metres, trolling for wahoo, sailfish, yellowfin and dorado from November to April, giant trevally and dogtooth tuna along the walls from May to October, and sunset or night handline trips year-round. Fishing happens outside the marine protected belt that surrounds the whale shark grounds.

Why the airport changes the trip

Every other local island in South Ari costs you a boat ride measured in hours. Dhigurah and Dhangethi are roughly two hours by speedboat from Male’, which is fine for a week but brutal for a short stay: two half-days gone, and a late flight into Velana usually means an overnight near the airport before you even start.

Maamigili removes that. The runway is on the island, the flight is under half an hour, and the walk from the terminal to a guesthouse is short enough to do with a rod tube over your shoulder. For a two or three night fishing stop, that’s the difference between one session and three. It also removes the single most common way short trips fall apart, which is a transfer delay eating the morning you had booked a boat for.

There’s a second-order benefit. Because the airport serves the whole atoll, boats based here are used to collecting guests from resorts and other islands, so the fleet is more accustomed to working around flight times than a purely village-based fleet would be.

What the fishing is actually like

South Ari’s structure is the draw: steep drop-offs, channels and coral formations falling from shallow flats into deep water, with visibility commonly reported at 25 to 40 metres. That combination holds both reef and pelagic species within a short run of the island.

The monsoon split is the same as everywhere in the country, and the month-by-month picture is in our Maldives fishing season guide. Worth checking before you fix flights, since the calm trolling season and the best popping months sit in opposite halves of the year.

The one thing to check before you book anything here: at least one charter service based on this island advertises guided spearfishing with spearguns supplied and pickup from resorts across the atoll. Spearfishing is banned throughout the Maldives under Regulation R-75/2020, with no exemption for tourists and no atoll where it’s permitted, and carrying or using a speargun is a prohibited activity. That the offer is marketed openly, next to a marine protected area, doesn’t make it legal. Rod, handline, jigging, popping and trolling are all entirely legal on a licensed boat, and that’s what any trip we supply will be doing.

Fishing near the whale shark grounds

Maamigili is often called Whale Shark Island, and the whale shark aggregation off this stretch of South Ari is the main reason most visitors come. That aggregation sits inside the South Ari Marine Protected Area, declared in 2009 to safeguard it, and fishing takes place outside that belt.

In practice this is less restrictive here than at the far end of the protected area. Boats leave the belt and fish the drop-offs beyond it, and because the island sits near the atoll’s southern edge, that’s a shorter run than from islands deeper inside the zone. The way the belt is drawn, and why it stretches 42 kilometres up to Dhigurah’s tip, is explained on our Dhigurah fishing charters page.

The practical upshot: a whale shark snorkel and a fishing charter are separate trips on separate water, so plan them on different days. Both are easy to fit into a short stay here precisely because you didn’t lose two days to transfers.

Getting to Maamigili

RouteRough timeBest for
Domestic flight, Velana to Maamigili (VAM)About 25 to 30 minutes in the airAlmost everyone; short stays especially
Speedboat from Male’Around two hoursTravellers avoiding another flight, or moving between islands
Public ferryRoughly six hours, set days onlyBudget travellers with time to spare

Flights are operated by domestic carriers with schedules that vary by day, so check availability for your dates before assuming a same-day connection works. The ferry runs on fixed days in each direction and is genuinely cheap, but at around six hours it’s a day of your trip. If you’re weighing airports, note the domestic hop from Velana still requires a connection at Male’, so allow sensible time between international arrival and the domestic leg.

How Maamigili compares with the alternatives

Within South Ari, the choice is mostly about transfers and character. Dhigurah gives you a three kilometre beach and a long sandbank, at two hours by boat. Dhangethi is smaller and quieter with excellent channel fishing, also at two hours. Maamigili trades some of that island charm for the airstrip, a busier working island and a fleet used to timing around flights.

Further afield, Rasdhoo offers the shortest run to deep water of any base we cover, and Male’ holds the heaviest tackle and deepest fleet. If you haven’t chosen a base yet, start with the comparison in our Maldives fishing charters guide rather than any single island page.

What Maamigili doesn’t do well

Postcard island quiet. This is a working island with an airport on it. Aircraft movements, airport jobs and a busier pace come with the convenience. If you want a sleepy village, Dhangethi does that better.

Beach life. Dhigurah’s long beach and sandbank are the atoll’s best. Maamigili’s appeal is access, not shoreline.

Charter selection. There are boats here, but this is not Male’. Peak weeks book out, and tournament-grade tackle still mostly lives in the capital.

Same-day tight connections. A domestic flight makes short trips workable, but schedules vary by day and a missed connection is still a missed fishing morning. Build in a buffer.

The rules on every Maamigili trip

The licence travels with the boat and its captain under the Fisheries Act 14/2019, so you carry no paperwork of your own; being on a properly licensed vessel is what matters, and we confirm that before supplying one. All sharks, rays, turtles, Napoleon wrasse and parrotfish are protected and go back however they were hooked. Spearfishing is prohibited nationwide, regardless of what is advertised locally. Within three miles of a government fish aggregating device, only traditional pole-and-line fishing is permitted. And the marine protected area governs where fishing can happen at all. Full detail sits in our Maldives fishing regulations guide.

How a Maamigili fishing trip comes together

The trips that work best here lean on the thing that makes the island different. A typical short stay might look like a late morning flight from Velana, an afternoon sunset handline session to shake off the travel, a full offshore day next morning while the wind is down, and a whale shark snorkel on the third morning before an afternoon flight back. That’s three water activities in under three days, which simply isn’t possible from a two-hour-transfer island.

As a Ministry of Tourism licensed travel agency based in Male’, we book the guesthouse, arrange the domestic flights alongside your international connection so the timings actually work, and supply the boat with its captain for the fishing, matched to your group and dates. Already on the island or arriving on a flight tomorrow? Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we’ll confirm what can genuinely be arranged before you commit.

No prices appear on this page by design. Every trip is quoted individually, in writing, itemised and adjustable, free to prepare, with nothing booked until you confirm. For market context across the Maldives, clearly labelled as indicative rather than our rates, see the Maldives fishing cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I charter a fishing boat from Maamigili?

Yes. Boats based on the island run trolling, jigging, popping, reef and sunset trips, and because Maamigili is the atoll’s air gateway, the fleet is used to collecting guests from resorts and other islands too. Trips reach the drop-offs within a short run. Peak weeks book out, so arrange the boat before you fly rather than on arrival, especially for a short stay.

Does Maamigili have an airport?

Yes, Villa International Airport Maamigili, code VAM, sits on the island itself and is the only airport in South Ari Atoll. Domestic flights from Velana take roughly 25 to 30 minutes, operated by domestic carriers on schedules that vary by day. It’s also the transfer point many South Ari resorts and guesthouses use, with a speedboat leg completing the journey to other islands.

Is Maamigili a good base for a short fishing trip?

It’s the best in South Ari for that, because of the airport. Two hour speedboat transfers to Dhigurah or Dhangethi consume most of two days on a short stay, while a half hour flight lets you land and fish the same day. A two or three night trip here can realistically hold an evening handline session, a full offshore day and a whale shark snorkel.

What can you catch fishing from Maamigili?

Trolling the outer drop-off produces wahoo, sailfish, yellowfin tuna and dorado, strongest November to April. Jigging the walls brings dogtooth tuna, amberjack and jobfish, and popping the channel seams brings giant trevally, best May to October and released as standard. Grouper, snapper, emperor and jobfish come up on bottom, sunset and night trips throughout the year.

Is spearfishing allowed at Maamigili?

No. Spearfishing is banned throughout the Maldives under Regulation R-75/2020, with no exemption for tourists, and carrying or using a speargun is a prohibited activity. At least one service based on this island advertises guided spearfishing with spearguns supplied, which is a warning about that listing rather than a sign the law differs here. Rod, handline, jigging, popping and trolling are all fully legal on licensed boats.

Can I fish and see whale sharks from Maamigili?

Yes, on separate trips. The whale shark aggregation sits inside the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where fishing is not permitted, while charters fish the drop-offs beyond that belt. Because Maamigili sits near the atoll’s southern edge, the run out of the protected zone is shorter than from islands deeper inside it. Plan the snorkel and the charter on different mornings.

Do I need a fishing licence in Maamigili?

No. In the Maldives the licence travels with the boat and its captain under the Fisheries Act 14/2019, so guests carry no paperwork and need no permit. What matters is being on a properly licensed vessel, which we confirm before supplying any boat. Protected species including all sharks, rays and turtles must be released, and the marine protected area determines where fishing can take place.

How much does a Maamigili fishing charter cost?

We don’t publish rates. Boat, hours, group size and season all move the number, and domestic flights add a separate cost worth pricing alongside the fishing rather than after it. We prepare a written, itemised quote for your exact trip, free and without obligation, with nothing booked until you confirm. For market context, our fishing cost guide publishes indicative ranges clearly labelled as market research.
