A shared sunset or night fishing trip from a local island is the cheapest way to fish here, typically USD 45 to 120 per person. The same trip booked as a private charter through a resort activity desk commonly runs into the high hundreds per boat.
Private big game charters are quoted per boat, not per person, and generally sit between USD 600 and 1,500 for a half or full day, with larger game boats going higher.
On top of any quote, expect a 10% service charge and 17% TGST. Almost every published price you will see is stated before those.

The single biggest variable is not the boat. It is whether you book through a resort activity desk or a local island boat.

Two things stand out. First, private charters are quoted per boat, so a group of four splits the same number four ways and the per-person cost falls sharply. Second, the multi-day range is enormous because it spans a guesthouse trip with shared boats at one end and a private liveaboard charter with a dedicated sport tender at the other.
The resort premium is real, and it is large. One published resort activity list we reviewed prices a private two-hour sunset fishing trip for six guests at USD 750, plus service charge and taxes. A shared sunset trip from a nearby local island can be under USD 60 per person for a similar two hours on similar water. You are paying for convenience, a smarter boat and not having to travel. Whether that is worth roughly ten times the price is a genuine question worth asking before you book at the activity desk.
When two quotes for the same trip differ by hundreds of dollars, it is almost always one of these.
The largest single input. A boat running forty minutes to the drop-off burns a fraction of what one running two hours burns, and that difference sits directly in your quote.
A twin-engine game boat consumes far more fuel than a dhoni and costs more to maintain. Bigger is faster and more comfortable, and you pay for both.
Resort activity desks carry overheads, service charges and margin that a guesthouse boat does not. The same water, a very different invoice.
Shared trips split the boat cost between everyone aboard. Private means you carry it alone, but you also choose where and how long you fish.
On a private charter, more anglers does not usually mean a higher price. Four people on a USD 1,000 charter pay USD 250 each.
Standard trolling gear is normally included. Specialist popping and jigging setups are sometimes charged separately, or you bring your own.
Collection from your island adds boat time. From a resort in another atoll it can add a great deal.
Fishing the far south means a return domestic flight per person on top of everything else. Huvadhoo and Laamu deliver the best fishing and the highest travel cost.
December to March is peak for both fishing and tourism. Good boats are scarcer and priced accordingly. May, June, September and October are noticeably softer.
Most published fishing prices in the Maldives are quoted before tax. The additions are predictable, and they are not small.

A worked example. A USD 1,000 full-day charter quoted before tax becomes roughly USD 1,270 once a 10% service charge and 17% TGST are applied. That is not a hidden fee, it is how the Maldives prices tourism, but it catches people out when they have budgeted from the headline number. Ask whether a quote is inclusive or plus-plus before comparing it against another.

Practical ways to bring the cost down without ruining the trip.
Where not to economise. A cheap boat with a skipper who does not know the marks is the most expensive trip you can book, because you have still paid for the day and caught nothing. The difference between a good skipper and an average one shows up in the results far more than the difference between a good boat and an average one.
