Fulhadhoo Excursions: Snorkelling, Sandbanks, Mantas and Fishing

The best of Fulhadhoo happens on the water. A short boat ride reaches dense coral, deep channels and empty sandbanks. This page compares the excursions you can actually book from Fulhadhoo, in Baa Atoll, with honest notes on how pricing works, what each trip includes and who it suits. We do not invent fixed prices or promise wildlife, because seasons and conditions are real and they change.

Book Fulhadhoo excursions with local help. HolidayVibe is a Ministry of Tourism licensed Maldives travel agency in Malé. We confirm the pricing unit, inclusions, taxes, minimum group and cancellation terms before you pay.

Fulhadhoo excursions, the direct answer. Fulhadhoo is a local island in Baa Atoll (geographically the Goidhoo Atoll group), about 101.21 km north-west of Malé and roughly 2 hours by shared speedboat, up to 2.5 depending on route and sea. Its worthwhile trips are boat-based: guided snorkelling at Rose Garden (also called Coral Garden), turtle and multi-reef trips, seasonal manta searches, Innafushi uninhabited-island picnics, sandbank visits, dolphin cruises, sunset and sunrise fishing, Goidhoo and Fehendhoo island hopping, and, in season, a longer Hanifaru Bay trip. Not every trip runs every day: shared departures can need a minimum group, while private boats cost more but give you control over timing and stops. Prices vary widely because some suppliers quote per person, some per couple and others per boat, so we confirm the unit and inclusions for your exact dates rather than copying a public menu figure. Sightings are never guaranteed.

How Fulhadhoo Excursion Prices Work

There is no reliable island-wide price list that applies to every boat and guesthouse on Fulhadhoo. This is the single biggest source of confusion, so it is worth being plain about it. A quotation may be per person, per couple, per private boat, based on a minimum group, or available only to guests of one property, and it may or may not include tax, lunch or a protected-area fee.

Public menus prove the problem. One guesthouse advertises two-person activity bundles at around USD 285, USD 460 and USD 680; another publishes individual figures from about USD 90 for a short beach snorkel up to USD 850 for a Hanifaru trip with a five-person minimum. These are useful as evidence that the excursions exist, but the pages do not always make clear whether each amount is per person, per boat or exclusive to that property. Do not treat them as HolidayVibe prices. We quote your trip once we have confirmed the unit and the inclusions.

Taxes to expect in 2026. TGST of 17% may or may not be included in a quoted excursion price, so ask. Green Tax of USD 6 per person per night applies to small-guesthouse stays; it is a stay tax rather than an excursion charge, but it affects your overall budget. Excursions are usually quoted in USD; some small local costs are in rufiyaa.

Snorkelling and Marine Safaris

Rose Garden (Coral Garden)

Shared or private boat · Confident snorkellers · Requires fins

Rose Garden, called Coral Garden by some providers, is one of the most distinctive boat-accessed reef experiences around Fulhadhoo. The regional tourism platform confirms it can be reached from Fulhadhoo, Fehendhoo and Goidhoo, and is closest to Fulhadhoo. Trips normally include boat transport and snorkelling equipment, though the exact price and inclusions depend on the provider.

Current and water depth change with the tide, so this should not be sold as suitable for every beginner. Before you book, confirm whether the guide enters the water, life-jacket availability, the current on the day, the boat-pickup procedure and total time in the water. Our full Fulhadhoo snorkelling guide covers the reef sites in detail.

Turtle and Multi-Reef Trip

Shared or private boat · Mixed abilities · Life jacket available

Turtle-focused and multi-point snorkelling trips visit two or three reef stops where hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), rays and reef fish are possible. A turtle trip means the guide visits a reef where turtles have been seen; it does not guarantee an encounter. Ask how many stops are planned, whether the trip suits beginners, whether the guide gets in the water, and what happens if visibility is poor. A responsible guide never touches, chases or feeds turtles.

Seasonal Manta Search

Seasonal boat trip · Wildlife travellers · Depends on recent sightings

Local manta searches may run when mantas (Mobula alfredi) are being reported in the wider Fulhadhoo, Fehendhoo and Goidhoo area. These are different from Hanifaru Bay. Before paying, ask whether the trip is a local manta search, a Hanifaru Bay visit, or a general reef trip where mantas are only a possibility, because these are three different products. No responsible supplier promises year-round manta sightings.

Hanifaru Bay from Fulhadhoo

Hanifaru Bay is a regulated marine protected area within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Seasonal water circulation during the south-west monsoon concentrates plankton and can attract feeding manta rays and occasional whale sharks (Rhincodon typus). It is snorkelling only; scuba diving is not permitted inside the bay. A trip from Fulhadhoo is a longer crossing than the local reef sites, and it depends on the official season, recent wildlife conditions, authorised operation, permit availability, minimum passengers and sea conditions.

Local-expert note. Fulhadhoo is not the closest Hanifaru base. Travellers choosing an island mainly for quick Hanifaru access should also compare Dharavandhoo or Maalhos. Choose Fulhadhoo for its beach, local reefs and quiet atmosphere, and treat Hanifaru as a valuable seasonal add-on rather than a daily certainty.

Island and Sandbank Trips

Innafushi Picnic Island

Private or small group · Couples and families · About 4.5 km west

Innafushi is a nearby uninhabited islet used for picnics, barbecues and a snorkel stop. “Uninhabited” does not mean “exclusive,” so another boat may visit while you are there. Confirm the format (two-hour, half-day or longer), whether lunch or a barbecue is included, whether there is shade, and the toilet arrangements. It is quiet and undeveloped rather than manicured, so bring shade and pack out your rubbish.

Sandbank Excursion

Shared or private · Couples, families, photographers

Fulhadhoo has a chain of shifting sandbanks off its west side. A trip may combine swimming, shallow lagoon time, a picnic, and a snorkel stop at a separate reef. The amount of exposed sand changes with the tide, so a sandbank may be smaller, partly submerged or unavailable in rough conditions. Snorkelling directly around bare sand is usually less interesting than a dedicated reef, so ask whether the package includes a coral stop. Drone photography is sometimes offered as a paid add-on, not a standard inclusion.

Goidhoo and Fehendhoo Island Hopping

Half-day guided trip · Culture and nature · Modest dress ashore

Goidhoo offers one of the more distinctive non-marine trips in the island group. A current four-hour experience combines a guided bicycle tour of the mangrove forest, a traditional mosque, a historic cemetery, the village and a guest beach, with transport, a local guide, water, snacks, a picnic lunch and snorkelling equipment commonly included, though details vary by provider. Fehendhoo, the nearest inhabited neighbour, sits about 5 minutes away by boat and can be combined with a village visit, a beach stop and snorkelling. On any hop, dress modestly in the village and around the mosque, ask before photographing residents, and remember these inhabited islands do not sell or serve alcohol. See our Fehendhoo island guide.

Wildlife Cruises and Fishing

Dolphin Cruise

Shared or private · Everyone, non-swimmers · 1.5 to 2.5 hrs

Spinner dolphins travel the channels around the atoll, and a cruise, usually early morning or late afternoon, heads out to look for them. It is the easiest excursion for non-swimmers and families since you stay on the boat. Dolphins are wild and free-ranging, so sightings are common but never guaranteed, and a responsible captain keeps a respectful distance rather than chasing, surrounding or cutting across a pod.

Dolphin cruises suit non-swimmers and families. Sightings are common but not guaranteed.

Sunset and Sunrise Fishing

Small-group boat · Families, beginners · Catch-and-cook option

Hand-line fishing suits beginners because the crew provides basic instruction, and a sunset trip often ends with a catch-and-cook barbecue of what you land. Common catches include tuna, trevally and snapper; nothing is guaranteed, and undersized or protected species are released. Do not assume the guesthouse prepares the catch for free: confirm which species may be retained, the minimum size, the cooking method and any preparation charge, and whether the meal replaces an included dinner.

Sport Fishing and Jigging

Private charter · Sport anglers · Priced per boat

Specialised sport fishing and jigging may be possible by request, but they are not standard daily products, so a specific charter is only confirmed once the right boat, crew and tackle are arranged. These are private, full-day and priced per boat, so they cost considerably more. We do not arrange any shark or fish feeding, which is harmful and increasingly discouraged across the Maldives.

Night and UV Snorkelling

Guided, provider-dependent · Confident swimmers

UV coral snorkelling uses ultraviolet torches to reveal natural fluorescence in some corals; it needs a trained guide, calm conditions and confident swimming. Bioluminescent plankton, the blue “sea of stars” glow, is a separate and unpredictable natural phenomenon usually seen from the shore. A provider may organise a plankton search, but the glow cannot be guaranteed, and a UV torch dive is not the same thing. Treat any listing that promises a guaranteed glow with caution.

Local-expert note. A shared trip is cheaper only when the minimum group forms. During low occupancy, a “cheap shared trip” may not run at all, so always ask for both figures: the shared per-person price and the private per-boat price. Once you are four or more, private is often the better value.

What Is Included, What Costs Extra

Usually included in a guided shared trip: the boat and fuel, captain and crew, a local guide, basic snorkel gear (mask, snorkel, sometimes fins), a life jacket on request, drinking water, a guesthouse pickup and a safety briefing. Rose Garden trips commonly include transport and snorkelling equipment.

Often extra: a private-boat upgrade, lunch or barbecue on full-day trips, professional or drone photography, a prescription or specialist mask, the Hanifaru visit fee and any protected-area charges, additional reef stops, fishing-catch preparation, taxes, and rescheduling after a missed departure. Ask for an itemised confirmation so there are no surprises.

Suggested Fulhadhoo Excursion Packages

These are planning concepts, not fixed-price products. We price them once your dates, group size and swimming level are confirmed.

Essential (4 to 5 nights): a guided reef or Rose Garden trip, a sandbank or Innafushi visit, and a dolphin cruise or sunset fishing trip.

Marine-life (May to November): multi-reef snorkelling, a turtle-focused trip, a seasonal local manta search, and a Hanifaru enquiry when conditions align. Wildlife never guaranteed.

Couple: a private sandbank, an Innafushi picnic and a sunset cruise. Confirm whether meals, photography and private-boat use are included.

Family: short guided snorkelling, a dolphin cruise, a sandbank and a Goidhoo cultural tour. Choose shorter boat times and confirm shade and child life jackets.

Seven-night discovery: Rose Garden, Innafushi, a dolphin cruise, fishing, Goidhoo or Fehendhoo, a weather-backup day, and a seasonal manta or Hanifaru option.

Transfer and Stay Planning

Fulhadhoo is normally reached by scheduled speedboat from Malé or the airport area, about 2 hours and up to 2.5 depending on route and sea. See the Malé to Fulhadhoo speedboat transfer guide for schedules and prices. Do not prepay an important boat excursion for shortly after your international arrival, because flight delays, immigration, baggage and the long transfer can disrupt the plan. Four to six nights gives most visitors enough time for two or three excursions, free beach days and a weather-backup day; three nights can feel rushed once the transfer and weather are considered.

Local Rules and Booking Limitations

Fulhadhoo is an inhabited island. Swimwear belongs on the designated bikini beach or on the excursion boat; cover shoulders and knees in village areas, and dress modestly on Goidhoo or Fehendhoo. Alcohol is not sold or served on the island. Do not feed or touch marine animals, do not stand on coral, take your rubbish back from sandbanks and uninhabited islands, and confirm drone permission before flying.

A few booking realities are worth understanding. Shared trips may not run without a minimum group, so your options are to change the day, join another property’s group or pay for a private boat. The captain makes the final safety decision, and wind, waves, rain and visibility can change or postpone a trip. Wildlife is never guaranteed, and a guide may substitute a reef or sandbank because of current or tide, which is normal when it is explained. For children and weak swimmers, confirm life-jacket sizes, shade, guide support and trip length before paying. On payment, ask about the deposit, balance, accepted currency, taxes and the refund process, and clarify the difference between an operator weather cancellation, a customer cancellation and wildlife simply not being found.

Plan Your Day: Two Sample Excursion Days

Relaxed day (non-swimmers welcome): a morning sandbank picnic with a swim and photos, back for lunch and rest, then a late-afternoon dolphin cruise. Lots of water and sky, no pressure.

Marine day (confident swimmers): an early Rose Garden and turtle-reef snorkel while the sea is calm, a midday break, an Innafushi picnic stop, and in season a manta search if sightings are good.

Fulhadhoo Excursions FAQ

What are the best excursions from Fulhadhoo?

The strongest options are Rose Garden snorkelling, turtle or multi-reef trips, Innafushi picnics, sandbank visits, dolphin cruises, sunset fishing, Goidhoo island tours and seasonal manta or Hanifaru Bay trips. Which suits you depends on your swimming level, budget and travel month.

How much do Fulhadhoo excursions cost?

There is no reliable island-wide tariff. Prices depend on whether the quote is per person or per boat, shared or private, the distance, duration, guest count and inclusions. Public menus show two-person bundles around USD 285 to 680 and single items from about USD 90 to 850, but the units are often unclear. We confirm an itemised current quote for your dates.

Are Fulhadhoo excursions shared or private?

Both may be available. Shared trips usually cost less per person but can require a minimum group to run, so a cheap shared trip may not operate during quiet periods. Private boats cost more but give you flexible timing and stops. Ask for both figures.

Can I visit Hanifaru Bay from Fulhadhoo?

A seasonal trip may be possible, subject to authorised operation, permits, minimum guests and sea conditions. It is a longer crossing than the local reefs, and Fulhadhoo is not the closest Hanifaru base, so Dharavandhoo or Maalhos are worth comparing if Hanifaru is your main goal.

What is the Hanifaru Bay fee in 2026?

The official protected-area portal lists MVR 310 per person, valid 1 May to 1 December 2026 (roughly USD 20). That is the protected-area visit fee only; the Fulhadhoo boat, guide and equipment are separate, and the exact charge a guesthouse trip passes on can differ, so confirm the total when booking.

Are manta rays or whale sharks guaranteed?

No. Local manta searches and Hanifaru trips depend on plankton, tide, season and recent sightings, and mantas gather on boat trips rather than in Fulhadhoo’s beach lagoon. Whale sharks are occasional Hanifaru visitors and less predictable than mantas. Treat any sighting as a bonus.

Can I scuba dive at Hanifaru Bay?

No. Hanifaru Bay is a regulated snorkelling-only protected area, and scuba diving is banned inside the bay. For dive sites in the wider atoll, see the Fulhadhoo diving guide.

Is Rose Garden suitable for beginners?

Sometimes, but only when conditions are calm and there is adequate guide and flotation support. Current can make it more appropriate for confident snorkellers on a given day. Rose Garden is boat-accessible from Fulhadhoo, Fehendhoo and Goidhoo, and closest to Fulhadhoo.

Is Innafushi a private island?

Innafushi is an uninhabited islet about 4.5 km west, used for picnics and barbecues. Uninhabited does not mean exclusive, so another boat may visit while you are there. It is quiet and undeveloped, so bring shade and pack out your rubbish.

Can families join Fulhadhoo excursions?

Yes. Short sandbank trips, dolphin cruises, guided reef stops and sunset fishing all suit children with supervision. Confirm child-sized life jackets, shade, trip duration, the swimming requirement and whether a parent can stay onboard.

Can the fishing catch be cooked?

Often, yes, as a catch-and-cook barbecue, but do not assume it is free. Confirm which species may legally be retained, the minimum size, the preparation method, any cooking charge and whether the meal replaces an included dinner.

Is the night UV snorkel the same as bioluminescence?

No. UV coral snorkelling uses ultraviolet torches to make coral fluoresce. Bioluminescent plankton is a separate natural blue glow seen from shore on some dark nights, which is weather and season dependent and cannot be booked to order. Neither guarantees a glow.

Can HolidayVibe book Fulhadhoo excursion packages?
