Dhangethi's diving reputation comes from geography. The island sits inside Alifu Dhaalu Atoll at the point where the outer reef system of South Ari Atoll is most complex: channels, thilas, walls, and open-reef sections are all within a short dhoni ride. The South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area (declared 2009, covering 42 kmΒ²) begins immediately to the south, which is where the whale shark feeding grounds are.
For divers, this means you are not commuting to good sites. Kudarah Thila, one of the most celebrated dive sites in the Maldives, is roughly 20 minutes away. Broken Rock and Dhigurah Thila are in the channel between Dhangethi and Dhigurah, immediately accessible. Intermediate to Advanced
One of the finest dive sites in South Ari Atoll. The reef top sits at 12β14 m with drop-offs to 25β30 m on most sides. The western face has isolated rock outcrops coated in soft coral; the northern side has sea fan fields rarely seen elsewhere in the Maldives; all swaying together when the current runs. Grey reef sharks, white-tip reef sharks, rainbow runners, blue-fin jacks, great barracuda, and tailfin batfish patrol the site. A small cave at 20 m on the eastern side adds a penetration element for advanced divers. Currents can be strong; best dived NovemberβApril but diveable year-round with the right conditions.
Intermediate
The most easterly of the frequently dived thilas in Dhigurashi Kandu channel. What distinguishes it immediately is the canyon: a crack 1β3 m wide and up to 10 m deep running through the thila. Grey reef sharks patrol the channel edge, Napoleon wrasse are a regular feature, and the western end has higher concentrations of pelagic fish: tuna, jacks, and barracuda drawn from the open water. Emperor angelfish, both juvenile and adult, are common along the reef slope. The thila is approximately 80 m long; currents and choppy seas can make conditions challenging, and an experienced boatman who knows the site is important.
Intermediate to Advanced
The largest thila in Dhangethi Kandu at approximately 500 m long, swinging east to west then north for another 250 m outside Viligilivaru. It is the most visible from the surface. The reef edge sits at 10 m, with overhangs beginning at 15 m stepping down to the bottom at 30 m. Three known caves: one at 18 m has a deep cut 50 m in length, with sea whips, sea fans, black coral bushes, and bright yellow feather stars on the cave floor. Dense schools of blue-dash and yellow-back fusilier, large numbers of scribbled filefish, eagle rays, and turtles. Because of its size it is preferred when marginal current or weather conditions affect the smaller channel sites.
Beginner-Friendly
A 50 m cargo ship now lying on a sandy bottom at approximately 30 m, next to a resort island. The wreck is well encrusted in coral and supports dense fish life throughout the structure: schools of batfish, Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, and resident reef fish inhabit every section. Despite the depth, the structure is accessible and the entry point manageable, making this a good wreck dive for certified divers who have not dived wrecks before. Visibility is typically good and currents less of a factor than on the open channel sites.

A coral thila starting at 12 m just off the island. The proximity makes it the ideal morning dive: boats are out before the day-trip crowd, and the site is rarely busy. Schools of batfish and fusiliers, turtles resting on the reef, and white-tip reef sharks resting on the sandy bottom between the coral heads are the consistent features. Good for orientation dives early in a trip, less dramatic than Kudarah or Broken Rock but reliable and low-stress. Also used for night dives.
All Levels
Shore entry from the bikini beach at high tide. The reef drops away at the outer edge of the lagoon and has emperor angelfish, cigar wrasse, pipefish, nurse sharks, baby black-tip reef sharks, and small stingrays in the shallows. Best at high tide when there is enough depth over the reef to move freely; at low tide much of the reef is too shallow. Good for casual snorkel sessions, Open Water confined-water practice, and a short morning dive before the dhoni departs. The outer reef edge generates current at high tide; stay inside the drop-off unless you are experienced.

A stepping stone between Discover Scuba and full Open Water. Certifies you to dive to 12 m under the supervision of a PADI Professional. The south-west monsoon does not stop diving at Dhangethi; it changes it. Plankton blooms reduce visibility slightly but attract feeding mantas, pelagic fish, and whale sharks in higher concentrations near the channel entrances. Many experienced South Ari divers prefer May to October for marine life volume even at the cost of slightly reduced visibility. The dry season wins on clarity and sea conditions; the monsoon wins on animal encounters.

Water temperature at Dhangethi ranges from 27β30°C year-round. A 3 mm shorty or full wetsuit is comfortable for most divers; a skin suit is enough for divers who run warm. The Indian Ocean thermocline can drop the temperature noticeably on deeper dives (below 25 m), so experienced divers doing repetitive deep dives may prefer a full 3 mm suit. Rental wetsuits are available; confirm sizing before your first dive.
November to April (dry season, NE monsoon) gives the best visibility (20β30 m), calmest seas, and most manageable currents at the channel sites. December to February is peak season. May to October (SW monsoon) brings more variable conditions and slightly lower visibility, but is the best period for manta ray encounters at cleaning stations and often produces higher concentrations of pelagic fish in the plankton-rich water. Whale sharks are present year-round. There is no bad season for diving at Dhangethi, only different trade-offs.
