Luxury Resorts in Baa Atoll: The 7 Best, and When to See the Mantas

The best luxury resorts in Baa Atoll are The Nautilus, Anantara Kihavah, Amilla, Soneva Fushi, Milaidhoo, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and the private island of Four Seasons Voavah. All seven sit inside the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, 30 to 40 minutes from MalΓ© by seaplane, and within a short boat ride of Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays gather to feed from roughly June to November.

Why Baa

Why Baa Atoll is the Maldives’ luxury heartland

Outside the MalΓ© atolls, nowhere in the Maldives has as many top-tier resorts in one place. Soneva Fushi opened here in 1995 and set the barefoot style that half the country copied, Four Seasons followed at Landaa Giraavaru in 2006, and newer islands like Milaidhoo and The Nautilus have kept the standard high.

The other reason is the sea. UNESCO made Baa a World Biosphere Reserve in June 2011, the first in the Maldives, and its best-known core zone is Hanifaru Bay, a shallow bay on the atoll’s eastern side where plankton piles up in the south-west monsoon and manta rays arrive by the dozen, sometimes by the hundred. If seeing that is on your list, Baa is where to stay.

The trade-off is the transfer. Baa is about 120 km north-west of MalΓ©, so you arrive by seaplane or by domestic flight and boat, not by speedboat. If you land late or want the shortest possible journey, our VIP transfers guide explains the options.

The Nautilus is the closest thing in Baa to having an island to yourself without booking the whole island. There are only 26 beach and ocean houses and residences on Thiladhoo, each with its own temperature-controlled infinity pool and a butler, and nothing runs to a timetable: breakfast is served whenever and wherever you want it, all day.

Dinner is at Zeytoun (European and Mediterranean), Ocaso (a Latin American and Japanese grill on the sand) or Thyme, with canapΓ©s at the Naiboli pool bar. The overwater Solasta Spa has three glass-floored treatment pavilions. CondΓ© Nast Traveller readers voted it the best resort in the Indian Ocean in 2020, and the whole island can be booked for a group.

Skip it if you like a lively bar and other guests around you. With 26 houses, The Nautilus is very quiet.

Amilla is the Baa resort we suggest most often to families and groups, because it has more space for more people than almost anywhere else in the atoll. The Four-Bedroom Beach Residence alone covers 920 sqm with an 11-metre pool, and the residences go up to eight bedrooms, with a private chef or self-catering if you prefer to eat in.

Smaller families can choose the two-bedroom Treetop Villa or a family water villa. Every stay comes with a Katheeb (Amilla’s butler), there is a kids’ club and the Javvu Spa, and the resort runs an IncluCare programme for guests with reduced mobility, which is rare in the Maldives.

Skip it if you want an adults-only feel. Amilla is built around families and groups, and that is its strength.

Milaidhoo is a small island, 300 by 180 metres, owned by a Maldivian family and designed by a Maldivian architect, and it feels personal in a way bigger brands rarely manage. The 50 villas are large from the start: 245 sqm over the water and 290 sqm on the beach, each with a freshwater infinity pool and a traditional undhoali swing.

Its restaurant Ba’theli by the Reef is the only one in the Maldives specialising in gourmet Maldivian cuisine, built to look like three trading boats moored in the lagoon. There is an overwater spa and yoga pavilion, a PADI five-star dive centre and a resident marine biologist, and children under eight are not accepted, so it stays calm.

Skip it if you are travelling with children under eight, or want a kids’ club.

The island has its own PADI five-star dive centre, motorised water sports and exclusive use of Voavah Summer, a 19-metre yacht. Landaa Giraavaru is 20 minutes away by speedboat, and Voavah guests can use all of its restaurants, spa and kids’ club as well.

Kihavah’s house reef starts a few seconds’ swim from the beach, with hawksbill turtles, reef sharks and eagle rays, and the resort is built to make the most of the water. Every one of the 80 villas has an infinity pool, and the overwater villas have sunken glass-bottom bathtubs, so you can watch fish from the bath. A Villa Host looks after you 24 hours a day.

Food is the other draw. SEA is an underwater restaurant and wine cellar on the house reef, SKY is a rooftop bar with one of the most powerful telescopes in the region, and Manzaru sits beside a 49-metre pool. The 24-metre sail yacht Ocean Whisperer is there for sandbank trips and sunset dinners at sea.

Skip it if you want a tiny, quiet island. With 80 villas and six restaurants and bars, Kihavah feels more like a small village.

Soneva Fushi opened on Kunfunadhoo in 1995 and more or less invented barefoot luxury in the Maldives: shoes off on arrival, bicycles instead of buggies, and villas hidden in the jungle rather than lined up on a jetty. Every villa has a private pool and a Barefoot Butler, and the 2026 factsheet lists 73 villas from one to nine bedrooms, which makes it one of the best islands in the country for big families.

There are more than ten places to eat, from Flying Sauces, reached by zipline above the canopy, to a six-seat omakase counter. The chocolate, cheese and ice cream rooms are open around the clock. Add an observatory with a resident astronomer, an open-air cinema, the only glassblowing studio in the Maldives and The Den for children.

Skip it if you want sleek, modern design and mostly overwater villas. Soneva Fushi is jungle, sand and timber, and most villas are on the beach.

If mantas are the reason you are coming to Baa, Landaa Giraavaru is hard to beat. Its Marine Discovery Centre has resident marine biologists, and in season the Manta on Call service gives you a phone that rings when mantas are spotted at Hanifaru Bay, so you can be on the boat within half an hour.

It is also one of the best wellness resorts in the country. AyurMa has Ayurvedic doctors, naturopaths and yoga therapists, with programmes of a week or longer. Opened in 2006 on a former coconut plantation, the island has a 50-metre pool, the Kuda Velaa kids’ club, and restaurants including Blu (Italian), Al Barakat (Arabian) and Fuego Grill.

Skip it if you want a small island. With 103 villas, Landaa is one of the larger luxury resorts in Baa.

Manta rays feeding at Hanifaru Bay in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Maldives

Hanifaru Bay

Hanifaru Bay manta season: when to go and the rules

Hanifaru is a small, shallow bay on the eastern edge of Baa. During the south-west monsoon, currents push plankton into it and hold it there, and manta rays come in to feed, often in tight spirals near the surface. Whale sharks sometimes join them. It has been protected since 2009.

  • Best chance: August to October, when the biggest feeding groups are most often reported.
  • Manta season: roughly June to November, during the south-west monsoon.
  • Edges: May and December can bring mantas, but it depends on the year.
  • Off season: January to April. Mantas move to other atolls; Baa is sunny, calm and great for the house reefs.
  • Snorkel onlyScuba diving in the bay has been banned since 2012. You float on the surface while the mantas feed below.
  • Always guidedEvery group goes with a licensed Hanifaru guide. Your resort books the boat and the guide for you.
  • Short sessionsTime in the water is capped at about 45 minutes, and boat and swimmer numbers are limited at any one time.
  • Hands offNo touching, chasing or blocking the mantas, no flash and no long selfie sticks. Rangers patrol the bay.
  • A small entry feeThere is a government fee per person, paid into the Baa Atoll conservation fund. Resorts usually add it to the trip.

Our tip: stay at least four nights in season. Mantas do not turn up every day, and two or three chances make a big difference. Staying on a budget? Guesthouses on Dharavandhoo are minutes from the bay.

Getting there

How to get to Baa Atoll

Seaplane

30 to 40 min

The classic Baa arrival and the most scenic one. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so you need to land in MalΓ© in time for an afternoon departure. Luggage limits apply, and some resorts have their own planes and lounges.

Domestic flight and boat

About 20 min, plus 10 to 30 min

Fly from MalΓ© to Dharavandhoo, then take the resort’s speedboat or yacht. It is the answer for late arrivals, because the domestic flights keep going after the seaplanes stop. Soneva Fushi is 10 minutes from the airport, The Nautilus 20.

Private jet

Direct to the north

If you fly privately, you can land at Maafaru in neighbouring Noonu Atoll, or clear in at MalΓ© and connect by private seaplane. The Nautilus can collect you from Maafaru on its yacht.

Beyond the mantas

What else to do in Baa Atoll

  • Sandbanks and dolphinsHalf-day trips to empty sandbanks and dusk cruises to watch spinner dolphins are on every resort’s list.
  • Diving beyond the bayHanifaru is snorkel only, but Baa has plenty of dive sites, from Dharavandhoo Thila to channels and reefs within a short boat ride of every resort.
  • Local islandsThulhaadhoo for lacquer work, Dharavandhoo and Maalhos for a look at everyday island life. Dress modestly and leave the alcohol at the resort.
  • FishingSunset handline fishing is easy to arrange, and big-game trips run on the outer reef. See our Baa Atoll fishing guide.

Questions

Luxury resorts in Baa Atoll: your questions answered

Which are the best luxury resorts in Baa Atoll?

Our seven are The Nautilus, Anantara Kihavah, Amilla, Soneva Fushi, Milaidhoo, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and the private island Four Seasons Voavah. Milaidhoo and The Nautilus suit couples, Soneva Fushi, Amilla and Landaa suit families, and Voavah is booked as a whole island.

When is manta season at Hanifaru Bay?

Roughly June to November, during the south-west monsoon, when currents push plankton into the bay. The biggest feeding groups are most often seen from August to October. Sightings depend on the moon, tides and plankton, so they are never guaranteed.

Can you scuba dive at Hanifaru Bay?

No. Diving in the bay has been banned since 2012, and visits are snorkel only, with a licensed guide and about 45 minutes in the water. You can still dive at other sites around Baa.

Which Baa resorts are closest to Hanifaru Bay?

Measured in a straight line from each island, The Nautilus, Soneva Fushi and Milaidhoo are the closest, at about 10 km. Landaa Giraavaru and Amilla are 13 to 14 km away, and Kihavah and Voavah about 17 km. Boat times depend on the route and the sea.

How do you get to Baa Atoll from MalΓ©?

By seaplane in 30 to 40 minutes, in daylight only, or by a 20-minute domestic flight to Dharavandhoo followed by a short boat ride. The domestic flight is the best option if you land in MalΓ© in the late afternoon or evening.

Is Baa Atoll a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

No. Baa Atoll is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, declared in June 2011 and the first in the Maldives. Hanifaru Bay, a marine protected area since 2009, is one of its core zones.

Is Baa Atoll good for families?

Very. Soneva Fushi has The Den, Landaa Giraavaru has the Kuda Velaa kids’ club, Kihavah has a free kids’ club for under-12s and Amilla has residences of up to eight bedrooms. Milaidhoo only takes children aged eight and over.

Is it worth visiting Baa outside manta season?

Yes. From January to April the weather is usually at its driest and the sea is calm and clear, which is ideal for the house reefs, sandbanks and diving. You just will not see the big manta gatherings at Hanifaru.

How much does a luxury holiday in Baa Atoll cost?

It depends on the resort, villa, meal plan, transfer and dates, and rates change often, so we do not publish live rates. Tell us your dates and who is travelling and we will quote two or three Baa resorts side by side.
