Two hours on a wooden dhoni as the sky goes orange, a hand line over the side, and no particular pressure to catch anything. It’s the trip we book more than any other, and there’s a reason for that.
Sunset fishing leaves in the late afternoon, usually around 5pm, and runs two to three hours. You’ll anchor over a reef, fish a simple hand line while the sun goes down, and be back in time for dinner.
It’s the gentlest fishing trip on offer here. No experience needed, nothing to bring, and the crew do the fiddly bits. If half your group isn’t bothered about fishing, they’ll still enjoy it, because it doubles as a sunset cruise.
It runs every month of the year, and you’ll typically catch snapper, grouper and emperor. Your resort or guesthouse will usually cook whatever you keep.
If you’re in the Maldives for a week and you’re going to do one thing on a boat that isn’t snorkelling, make it this.
It asks almost nothing of you. You don’t need to be an angler, or up at dawn, or comfortable in rough water. The dhoni stays inside the atoll where it’s flat, you sit on a wooden bench with a line in your fingers, and the sky does something ridiculous over the water for about twenty minutes.
It’s also the trip that works when your group wants different things. One of you can be seriously trying to catch dinner while the other takes photographs and doesn’t touch a line all evening. Both of you come back happy, which is not something you can say about a full day offshore.
A small honest note. If you’ve come to the Maldives specifically to fish, this isn’t your trip. You’ll enjoy it, but you’ll want more. Come out for night fishing instead, when the reef fish are properly feeding, or book a big game charter and go offshore. Sunset fishing is a lovely evening. It isn’t a serious session.
Every crew does it slightly differently, but this is the usual rhythm.
The crew are cutting bait, usually squid or strips of skipjack. Quick briefing, everyone picks a spot, and you push off. Bring a light layer even if it feels warm now.
You won’t go far. The skipper is looking for a reef edge they know, usually in twenty to forty metres. Engine off, and it goes very quiet.
This is the bit everyone remembers. The crew show you how to hold the line so you can feel the bite through your fingertips, which takes about thirty seconds to learn. Meanwhile the whole sky goes orange, then pink, and the water goes glassy.
The half hour after the sun drops is usually the most productive part of the trip. Reef species start moving, and if you’re going to catch something, it’s often now.
The crew clean anything you’re keeping on the way in. Hand it to your resort or guesthouse kitchen and they’ll usually cook it, either that night if you’re not too late or the next day.
These get muddled constantly, including by charters who use the names loosely. Here’s the honest difference.

Manage your expectations a little and you’ll have a better time. This is reef fishing on a hand line in the last hour of daylight, not a serious session.

Some evenings everyone catches. Some evenings the boat gets three fish between eight people and you all watch a magnificent sunset instead. That’s fishing, and anyone guaranteeing you a haul isn’t being straight with you.

Sunset in the Maldives happens fast. There’s no long northern European twilight here. The sun drops, the colour is spectacular for fifteen or twenty minutes, and then it’s dark.
Which means departure time matters more than people expect. A trip leaving at 5pm gives you time to reach the reef, settle in and have lines down before the light turns. Leave at 5:45 and you’ll spend the best part of the show still motoring out.
Ask what time the boat actually departs, not what time you should arrive at the jetty. And if you’re travelling for the photographs specifically, ask about a private trip so you can set the time yourself.
Two things worth knowing about the seasons. Sunset fishing runs all year because you stay inside the atoll, but the sky is different. The dry northeast monsoon from November to April gives you clearer, cleaner sunsets more reliably. The wetter southwest monsoon from May to October brings more cloud, and cloud is what makes a sunset spectacular rather than merely nice. Some of the best skies I’ve seen out here came on days that started grey.
