2. Maldives Resort Decision Flowchart (Text Version)
Use this like a decision tree. Start at the top, follow the answers that sound most like you, and you’ll quickly
arrive at the type of island and villa that makes sense for your trip.
Step 1 – Who are you?
Pick the option that sounds most like your trip:
- ❤️ Couple / Honeymoon → jump to Step 2A
- 👨👩👧 Family with kids → jump to Step 2B
- 👯 Friends group → jump to Step 2C
- 🧘 Solo traveller → jump to Step 2D
Step 2A – Couples
What’s your main vibe?
- • Privacy & romance → smaller islands, adult-leaning resorts, private pool villas, strong spa.
- • “Wow” photos → design-forward resorts, overwater pool villas, creative dining.
- • Adventure + romance → a good house reef plus easy access to manta/whale shark trips.
Step 2B – Families
Think in age brackets
- • Under 4 → calm, shallow lagoon, short speedboat transfer, beach villa.
- • 4–12 → free or affordable kids club, family rooms, simple food options.
- • Teens → watersports, diving, a bit of buzz so they’re not bored.
Step 2C – Friends
What’s your group style?
- • Chill catch-up → larger islands with multiple bars/restaurants and quiet corners.
- • Active & social → beach clubs, music, lots of activities.
- • Mixed → a “classic all-rounder” island where people can do their own thing.
Step 2D – Solo
Recharge or social?
- • Deep recharge → smaller, quieter islands, spa focus, no pressure to be social.
- • Social but chill → medium-size islands with friendly bars and group excursions.
Step 3 – Transfer: Speedboat, Seaplane or Domestic Flight?
- • Short trips (3–4 nights) → speedboat resorts near Malé work best.
- • 5–7+ nights → seaplane or domestic flight + speedboat becomes worth it.
- • Nervous flyers / families with small kids → speedboat is usually simplest.
Step 4 – Beach Villa or Overwater Villa?
- • “I want sand under my feet” → beach villa, often more practical for kids.
- • “I want to climb down a ladder into the lagoon” → water villa.
- • Can’t decide? → split stay: a few nights overwater, the rest on the beach.
Step 5 – Meal Plan: BB, HB, FB, AI
- • BB (breakfast only) → feels flexible but can be the most expensive in the end.
- • HB (breakfast + dinner) → ideal if you snack or eat light lunches.
- • FB (three meals) → straightforward for families who stay on-island.
- • AI (all-inclusive) → great if you enjoy drinks and don’t want to think about every bill.
3. “Resort Personalities” – Which One Sounds Like You?
Maldivian resorts feel very different from each other. Instead of hunting for “the best”, try to match the island’s
personality with your travel personality.
Barefoot Bohemian
Sand paths, bicycles, palm trees, outdoor showers. You’ll probably forget where your shoes are by day two.
Chic Socialite
Design-forward spaces, sunset bars, curated playlists and photo-friendly angles everywhere.
Classic All-Rounder
Big main pool, plenty of dining options, mix of couples and families – the “this just works” island.
Quiet Minimalist
Smaller, calmer islands with soft design and low noise – ideal if you’re recovering from burnout.
4. Things People Forget to Check (That Matter Later)
Villa photos sell the dream, but these details are often the reason people say “I wish we’d known this before”.
Sunrise vs Sunset Side
Many islands have both sunrise and sunset villa categories. Sunrise means gentle morning light and cooler
afternoons. Sunset means those dramatic golden-hour skies – but more direct afternoon sun on your deck.
Real Privacy from Neighbours
Marketing photos rarely show the villa next door. Look at real-guest pictures and maps to see how close decks
are, and whether beach villas are tucked into vegetation or very open.
Noise Level & Vibe
Some islands have DJ nights and lively bars, others go quiet after dinner. Neither is “better” – it just needs
to match your mood for this trip.
Hidden Costs
Don’t forget bottled water, soft drinks, specialty coffees, taxes, service charges and activities like
jet-skiing or private dinners. They add up faster on a tiny island than in a city.
5. Real-Life Example Paths
Here are three common Maldives “profiles” and how the flowchart guides each one toward a type of island and stay.
Example 1 – Honeymoon Couple, 6 Nights
Couple, privacy-focused, happy to take a seaplane, mid-to-high 5★ budget. The flowchart points to a smaller,
spa-focused island with a split stay: a few nights in a beach villa for that toes-in-the-sand feeling, then a
few nights in an overwater pool villa for the “wow” factor.
Example 2 – Family with Two Kids (8 & 11)
Family, calm lagoon and kids club are top priority, prefer a simple speedboat transfer and a mid-range budget.
The flowchart suggests a classic all-rounder island near Malé, with family-friendly meal plans and a good kids
club, rather than an ultra-remote atoll.
Example 3 – Two Friends, Diving + Chill
Two friends, focused on snorkelling and diving with some downtime, comfortable 4★–5★ level, okay with a
seaplane. The flowchart leads to a dive-strong island with a good house reef and reliable dive centre, rather
than a pure party island or ultra-quiet honeymoon spot.
6. Final Checklist Before You Press “Book”
When you’ve narrowed it down to two or three resorts, run each one through this quick checklist.
If it passes, there’s a good chance you’ve found “your” island.
- • Do the transfer times match your international flights comfortably?
- • Beach or overwater – and are you happy with sunrise/sunset side and privacy?
- • Does the meal plan (BB/HB/FB/AI) match how you truly eat and drink on holiday?
- • Is there a good balance between calm lagoon and snorkel-friendly reef for your group?
- • Does the overall vibe (romantic, family, social, quiet) match your mood for this trip?
- • When you add room, transfer, food and a few activities, does the total still feel exciting rather than stressful?
